"Malaysian DJ Maverick Teh has been taken to hospital after claiming a new world record for spinning discs non-stop for 79 hours and five minutes.

Playing a mix of techno, house and chill-out and sustained by coffee and honey, the rules set by Guinness World Records only allowed him a 15 minute break every eight hours and a gap of no more than 10 seconds between tracks.

Video tape of the entire event will be sent to the publication so that the new record can be verified.

After passing the 74 hour mark at the decks, Maverick told the BBC he was extremely tired, however he said that when he got home he would probably put some techno on his stereo before crashing out."

That's 3.3 days of non-stop spinning!!!!!

Is he insane? How did he not get bored? What kind of achievement is this? What are its merits? How do transport 70 hours worth of records? Who's gonna take the crown from him?

and what kind of diet is coffee and honey?

I like the way he was going to go home and listen to some techno to chill out afterwards.

Hair of the dog, as they say.

Were only records allowed or could he just pop in his mp3 collection?

Here's a blog I found that's got more info on Maverick and also confirms:

"He will spin a mix of vinyl records and digital tracks via D-Vinyl non-stop to beat the current unofficial record of 80 hours and five minutes made by DJ Buddy Love of the United States in June."

So yeah, I guess he had MP3s.

"Teh said he did a trial run in August and broke the 74-hour mark.
'That was pure hell,' he said."

On the coming attempt, he said: “I will play according to my mood because it is going to be a long set. Of course, I will not be playing techno for three days and three nights.”

I would imagine he'd just stopped caring half way through and just stuck on the longest tracks he had to allow him some rest. I wonder if he was continously scutinized for his ability to still mix seamlessly as the endurance took its toll.

This has to be the worst job ever.

Glen Jones on WFMU did the 100 hour plus Guinness thing, in May 2001. This guy had a ways to go....

To answer myself, that was radio setting, I believe the Malaysian attempt was in a club setting.

What I want to know is how many people were dancing for the entire set and then went to a party afterwards after screaming for another tune.

I was wondering how many people were on the floor at, say, 10:30am. Or 1:45pm. I'll bet the janitorial staff asked him to turn it down a little and wondered if they could bring up the house lights so they could sweep.
