I hate the shitty sounding drum track on "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow." However, putting "Chick-o-stick" in the chorus redeems it somewhat.

I have to go with "Fast Car," though, since it was one of the first songs I could play beginning to end when I was just learning the guitar.

Not shitty! "Lo-Fi"! Before its time, even!

"Fast Car" as performed by Jim O'Rourke in Tokyo last year.

"Fast Car" is probably my favourite piece of guitar playing ever recorded.

Yes, "Fast Car" was the first song I could play from beginning to end on guitar. I love it so much and am listening to it now. Has made me cry before.

Anybody else sensing some sort of Tracy Chapman revival recently? Overheard 'Fast Car' 3 times in the past week when it had been like 5 years since I last heard it. Also two friends from different circles mentioned her in conversation this weekend.

We've gotta make a decision:
Leave tonight
or live and die this way

I can't even believe how real this song is.

in the first verse

saw the video for this for the first time a year or two ago, was o_0 at the repeated shots of spinning a gun on the table via the trigger guard. I guess this never got to be the big US summer crossover smash it ought to have?

See my old man's got a problem
You live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says, 'My body's too old for working'
His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, 'Somebody's gotta take care of him'
So I quit school and that's what I did

My top 'oh shit I am about to have a cry' songs:

- Fast Car
- Against Pollution (The Mountain Goats)
- Heavy Water/ I'd Rather Be Sleeping (Grouper)

Something about wanting to love despite how fucked up everything is really sends me I guess
