The Baby song is the one in the ad with Tracy McGrady, I presume? If so, that's a fucking catchy song just from the bit that gets played on the ad.

Is B2K's "Girlfriend" underrated enough?
Also:
Dublex Inc's "Tocame"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 2 January 2004 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the one with Dream and Loon - also, Nivea's "Laundromat" and R. Kelly's "Step in the Name of Love (remix)". Is Jamelia's "Superstar" underrated or am I just not paying close enoug attention? And for rock stuff, the Libertines' "Time for Heroes" and Ted Leo's "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone?"

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 2 January 2004 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Superstar is rated here. Laundromat thirded, Tatu Eurovision seconded.

This thread should keep my soulseek busy for a few days, yum yum.

Wayne Wonder 'You Make My Life Complete'
Big Noyd 'Shoot Em Up'
Kanye West 'Thru The Wire'

mark e (mark e), Friday, 2 January 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 January 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Lifesavas "Hellohihey"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 2 January 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't believe 'Just Because' WAS as big as it was

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 January 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

can songs that were/are huge hits really be "underrated"?

i think so, yes. i think a significant number of hits become so without any kind of acclaim. it does seem an oxymoron, 'an underrated hit', but i think there are many hits that dont seem to get any kind of credit at all, outside of airplay/sales. of course you could well argue that that in itself serves as it becoming rated, but im not entirely sure that alone suffices the requirements of 'rated'.

gareth (gareth), Friday, 2 January 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Target ft Wiley etc "Pick Yourself Up" (aim high)
Horsepower v Goldspot "Sholay" (tempa)

martin (martin), Friday, 2 January 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The Flaws featuring MC Chick-a-Boo - "Freek"

JoB (JoB), Friday, 2 January 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

not heard that Flaws track. been sat on my desk for months .. (free smirnoff sampler with ewan pearson mix of that track .. ) ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 2 January 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno anyone else who likes "Miss Independent" as much as I do.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Friday, 2 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Motion City Soundtrack - "The Future Freaks Me Out"

Yeah, I know, pop-punk, but I LIKE IT DAMMIT!!!!

Lewis J. Bateman (Lewis Bateman), Friday, 2 January 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually it's not punk at all. It's just pop with pop-punk hooks.

Lewis J. Bateman (Lewis Bateman), Friday, 2 January 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, that Cunninlynguists/Masta Ace was a single? didn't know. my appetite for undie rap is very VERY limited, and that's the only one i truly loved last year. the lyrics are fairly stupid, but the beat is on par with Premo's loveliest glacier-trapped-metropolis-in-stasis moments.

a lot of tunes mentioned i second, esp. So Gone, Laundromat, I'm Lovin' It and Dipset.

i wanted to mention Cassidy & R.Kelly's "Hotel" but i notice it finally managed to crawl into the Billboard top 50 so there's hope yet!

my votes:

Rose Falcon - Up, Up, Up
power-punk-newave-teen-pop perfection that shoulda been a worldwide smash, but due to whatever rec comp exec fuckup never got further than the outer reaches of Radio Disney undeground. such a shame! :(

Eve - Satisfaction
from the tail-end of last year so it counts right? airplay-wise it was a flop, but i think it's as luscious and juicy as "let me blow ya mind"

Hot Action Cop - Fever For The Flava
Ugly Kid Joe's "Everything About You" reincarnated as frat nu-metal. am possibly the only person on this planet that loves it.

Brio From Rio - Just For Me
brash & sassy latin-tinged handbag goodness that did fuck all chartwise. okay, i just checked and it's actually from 2002, but still!!

Jackie O - My Pussy
didn't even achieve "My Neck, My Back"-like status of cult club smash. :(

Scooter - Maria (I Like It Loud)
well, the kids love it as always! but nu-found ILM crush on Scooter in throes of their UK chart comeback seemed to quiet down just as they released this, their best in ages.

DJ Cosmo meets Digital Rockers - Love Song / Mark'oh - Stuck On You
two of the finest moments from this year's short lived kinda-revival of early 90s german pop-rave.

Bertine Zetlitz - Girl Like You
gorgeous Norwegian electro-pop produced by Richard X, loved by Siegbran AND Geir. c'mon, how much more d'ya need? :)

Holly Valance - Naughty Girl
yeah, third singles off albums released the year before are not an exciting prospect, and neither are Texas or even Gregg Alexander nowadays... but this is that elusive perfect Texas tune they themselves never quite made.

Teedra Moses feat. Jadakiss - You'll Never Find (A Better Woman)
is this a Kanye production? anyone?

Nodesha - That's Crazy
is this a Jam&Lewis production? could be. like a J.Lo jam only fluffed up, aurally saturated til burst. still, as with say Mario's "C'mon", i understand why someone who isn't obsessed with R&B would find it uninteresting.

Youngstar - Bodyrock
Doop meets 4x4 grime.

Lacquer - Behind
"underrated" in the sense of "if Galleon's fourth single or whatever could get at least SOME airplay, why the fuck didn't this chart?"

Marilyn Manson - This Is The New Shit
his best single since "The Dope Show".

Hitman Sammy Sam - Step Daddy
were it not for ILM, i wouldn't know this record exists. and even on ILM it didn't get nuff props! many dimwits like to say hip hop is all about guns'n'bitches'n'bling, but when was the last time there was a funny rock song about a step-dad battling it out with da brats, huh?

Superchumbo - This Beat Is
meaty, delirious house banger. how uncool!

Magic Box - If You
melancholic italo-dance. even more uncool.

Ruby Amanfu - Sugah
like rockier Sugababes done right.

Big Tymers feat. R. Kelly - Gangsta Girl / Malik Yusef feat. Kanye West & Common - Wouldn't U Like 2 Ryde
i'm not sure if these were proper singles, but... the first one i didn't think much of first but it has grown on me recently, love the subtly off-kilter latin feel. the second one coz i can't get enough of Kanye at the moment!

Mind Taker, Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say "Hotel" is the only weakness in an otherwise perfect year for R.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Tymers feat. R. Kelly - Gangsta Girl
otm! this is a great song. i wasn't even aware that r. kelly could produce like that! were you?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Saturday, 3 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

have you been living under a rock?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 3 January 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Behind by Lacquer is a great call here.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 January 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't know that he could be that complex in his productions. i have gained new respect for the man.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Saturday, 3 January 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

or, should i say: just respect. i didn't have any before.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Saturday, 3 January 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Mind Taker OTM about "Naughty Girl" too.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 3 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the funny thing about Texas is, i've always liked most of their singles (up to "Carnival Shite" anyway!) and hoped for a best of where they'd all be collected, and then it came out a few yrs ago and i got it and almost never played it to this day!

btw Tom - have you heard Texas' "Hush"? the tune, not the album. they did it with Rae & Christian - originally it appeared on their debut and then on Texas' same-titled '99 album. i hate Rae & Christian, but that one is one of the most beautiful, lushest pieces of dusty sunset trip-hop i've ever heard.

Mind Taker, Saturday, 3 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Al likes the 'gonna meet up, gonna meet up' version of 'I'm Lovin' It' with the male ballet teacher. (Shhhh!)

Le Coq (DarrenK), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Killer Mike feat Big Boi - "a.d.i.d.a.s"

This got some love in the end-of-years, but it didn't make many top 10s. People seemed to forget about post-"Hey Ya!".

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"A.D.I.D.A.S." is so damned catchy, but I CRINGE during the homophobic verse. Maybe it's some knee-jerk P.C. wiring in me, but it totally kills the song I think.

I will second "Seeing Red" by Killing Joke. Never heard them before this song, but it's damned good. Maybe 10 years ago, this would have been a hit I think.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

JC Chasez - "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)"

I think this was 2003.

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Wayne Wonder - No Letting Go

djdee2005, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

wayne wonder feat ll cool j and duchess - no letting go rmx: incredible extra intense extra heartbreaking (at least b4 the guests come in) extra extra

teedra moses not a kanye beat, no, some guy i've never heard of but i've been told the rest of her forthcoming album is the same sort of amerie style classic. otm about jackie o, i'd a thought ilm especially but no. nice to see u again mindtaker!

prima fassy (bob), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and the version of 'baby boy' with same beat but completely diff lyrics!

prima fassy (bob), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)
