anybody have this/heard this?

bakhtin, Saturday, 17 January 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this supposed to be the tapes of The KLF's Chill Out before Cauty stopped working with Alex Patterson?

Former Supposed So Called Nihilist Teenage Drug Disco Addiction Counselor (mjt), Saturday, 17 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that was called Space.

hector (hector), Saturday, 17 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it was.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 17 January 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

This is Speicher 14 then, right?

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 17 January 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yes it is

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 18 January 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

time for a speicher ii cd, then. please.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 18 January 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all new tracks. it's tops. best of the recent batch of speicher's.

stirmonster, Sunday, 18 January 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Just heard this - The Orb's track is ace, should be a shoo-in for the next Speicher CD. Mayer's track has some awesome (gothic?) vocal samples as well....

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, the long-awaited superpitcher album is all new material, poppier than expected.

nick.K (nick.K), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you heard it?
For some reason, I picture him doing a loungey, torch ballad on the album.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Poppier = like "Time To Cry"? This could be a good thing, although he really should include at least one classic zone-out marathon a la "More Heroin" or his remix of "You Don't Need A Weatherman".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

what do people think of the superpitcher remix of ghost cauldron, it's definitely got that steamy pop sound. oh and the michael mayer track on the new speicher bumps so hard, best speicher for ages.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

just a question: when you people talk about "best speicher for ages", is a "speicher" a 12" vinyl? ie, is there only the one speicher CD, the digital mix one by Michael Mayer?

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Correct. The Speicher series is a series of 12" singles. They compile them every now and then for the folk who can't cope with vinyl.

___ (___), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

speicher = kompakt's straight-up "dancefloor" singles. though i suppose i should really put "straight-up" in quotes instead of dancefloor.

re: superpitcher - he doesn't need to stop doing stuff like his dntel remix but i'd love to hear him put out more post-acid jack tracks like "fieber".

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought that superpitcher/ghost cauldron (who they?) split 12 was great. "are you conscious?" easily ranks among my favorite superpitcher tracks.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me, or does "X" resemble the Jos Vermeiren (sp?) track that opens Villalobos' Taka Taka mix?

I prefer the R. Voigt track on Speicher 13 to both of these. Call me crazy, etc.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Forget what I just said -- "Masterblaster" just stomp hole in wall! Hulk calm now.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The R. Voigt style tracks aside, a lot of the time I can't tell what's behind a track being released on a Speicher 12" rather than a Kompakt 12".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've often wondered about the difference, but like vahid says, it's supposed to be Speicher=dancefloor/techno - Kompakt=pop/minimal. Whether that actually pans out in practice is another story...

From the overloadmedia interview:

O.M. Is Kompakt an underground pop label?

Michael Mayer - In a way, but at the same time we push our techno line through the Speicher series and ambient line. Kompakt is never one sound and never has one focus. We have very high output, we release a record every two weeks. We feel that not every record has to please everybody. People should check what each one is about and decide whether to buy it or not. We like to keep it as open as possible.

Mood, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

when is the superpitcher album supposed to drop?

djdee2005, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think May was the projected date.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey is this Orb/Mayer Speicher worth buying anyway? Should I just wait until the next comp?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

has there ever been a non-cd kompakt s/d??

tell us more about the superpitcher album, nick!

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i love how 'masterblaster' references 'loving you'.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

has there ever been a non-cd kompakt s/d??

No, I don't think so. Here are the essentials as I see them (trying to display some restraint here): Dettinger - Blond; M. Mayer - 17 & 4; Dettinger - Puma; Dubstar - Shining Through; Dettinger - Totentanz; Sascha Funke - Campus; Closer Musik - One Two Three (No Gravity); Schaeben & Voss - Fein Raus; Sascha Funke - Safety First; Markus Guentner - Regensburg; M. Mayer - Pensum; Gustavo Lamas - MaƱana; Jonas Bering - Emballages; Sascha Funke - Drei Auf Drei; All - Alltag 1-4; Superpitcher - Heroin; Lawrence - Teaser; Jonas Bering - Marine; Thomas Fehlmann - Whistle; Closer Musik - You Don't Know Me; Markus Guentner - Regensburg Remix; Justus Koehncke - 2 After 909; Klimek - Milk and Honey; Juergen Paape - So Weit Wie Noch Nie; Thomas Fehlmann - Streets of Blah; The Orb - Kompassion; Mikkel Metal - Testan; Justus Koehncke - Homogen; Ferenc - Yes Sir, I Can Hardcore; Jonas Bering - Normandie; Reinhard Voigt - Kontakt; DJ Koze - The Gekloeppel Continues; Magnet - Rising Sun; M. Mayer - Privat; Oxtongue - Delight; Phong Sui - Wintermute; Heiko Voss - I Think About You; Speichers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 14.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sssssome restraint? :*o

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It began as essentials and wound up a search, I suppose.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Why didn't the Ferenc track (and for that matter the Heiko Voss single and "Unter Null") end up on Total 5 (esp. since it's so short, only 10 or so tracks)? It would have been one of their best comps. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No idea why Ferenc wasn't on there.

From what I can tell, "Unter Null"'s not on there 'cause it's a Speicher track (to my knowledge, no Speicher tracks have appeared on any of the Totals) and it was already on the Mayer Speicher mix to begin with.

My guess is that they left Voss off Total 5 since two mixes from that 12" were going to appear on Mayer's Fabric mix.

Am I the only one who favors "Bring It Back" over "Unter Null"?

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Musick" was on Total 3 though! I can't remember if other stuff was (that may be it). I can understand why they would want to keep Speicher and Total distinct now (and keep the repetition with the Fabricmix to a minimum--although "Mushroom" appears on both), but it definitely resulted in a lesser addition to the series.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Musick" was on Total 3 though!

Is it the same version/mix? Those same-titled tracks always throw me off.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, the "Musick" on Total 3 is different to the "Musick" on the Speicher Mix, although I imagine they're from the same 12". It's not actually a Speicher release (nor as Ulf Lohmann's "Before") but it was put on the Speicher mix presumably because it fits with it stylistically and pre-dates the Speicher series taking off in a big way in '02. Personally I don't know why Kompakt didn't licence the fuck out of that T. Raumschmiere remix of 2Raumwohnung and put it on every cd they released this year.

"Bring It Back" is great but it's a tad more restrained than the all-out shuffle assault of "Unter Null" (also prob very few people who don't have the 12" know it).

BTW I imagine I'm not the only one who was at first very ambivalent and then came around in quite a big way re: the Speicher mix. Maybe if it had been mixed by Reinhard Voight fewer people would have been disappointed that it wasn't Immer 2 or something - almost every track is great, especially the first half.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Speicher Mix a lot. Those were definitely the trax that people in Cologne went most crazy for when I saw Mayer DJ (and he played a bunch of Speicher stuff.) But yeah it's clearly not Immer 2, it's just a comp of stylisticly similar trax which Mayer mixed together (really well, but it doesn't have the feel other his mixes.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It's interesting, I was always ever so slightly underwhelmed by "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" both on the Miss Kittin mix (her interjections at fault maybe) and on the 12", but in the Speicher mix it sounds amazing - and so inspired to then launch into "Unter Null"!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Well the original is so great, any other version has a lot to live up to. But I think it's a great track (I haven't heard the Miss Kitten mix, I imagine her doing something over it might turn me off) and yeah it's a gorgeous segway into "Unter Null". I wonder if Kompakt is going to continue to release comps only for sublabels (so like Kompakt Pop will have its own comp and Speicher its own comp and Profan or whatever its own) because I hope not. Part of what made the Total series so great was the range of the comps (although I can understand why the started putting all the Pop Ambient stuff on its own--see the current Aquarius Records list if you want to know why, too.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I fully agree, at least insofar as the perceived effect on the Total series is concerned (although Andy earlier made a convincing argument to the contrary based on the actual nature of the different comps this year). Certainly a distinct Kompakt Pop comp would be the nail in the coffin somehow.
