Screamin' Jay Hawkins - "I Put A Spell On You" (Stranger Than Paradise)

dleone (dleone), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"You're So Square" Elvis Presley (from Jailhouse Rock)

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazarus (in "Silence of the Lambs")
"Jump Into the Fire" by Harry Nilsson (in "Goodfellas")

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"You Are Too Beautiful," Hannah and her Sisters. That became our wedding song.

Ditto on Screamin' Jay.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bang Bang" from Kill Bill no doubt

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd never heard that before?
What are you, too good for oldies stations?

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually live under a rock at the bottom of a very deep cave.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

In HELL.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Eye of the Tiger"

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

'Just like Honey' from Lost in Translation.

Ignore, Monday, 19 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Jump Into the Fire" by Harry Nilsson (in "Goodfellas")

YES! Alex NYC OTM. First time I've said that.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Needle in the Hay" - Elliot Smith - Royal Tennenbaums
"Alone Again Or" - Love - Bottle Rocket (my first expose to Love)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan Ferry, "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" from Legend -- a perfect encapsulation of eighties hypersmooth Ferry in one song.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

'Come Here' by Kath Bloom from 'Before Sunrise'.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

To continue Matt's Wes Anderson vibe:

The Creation - Making Time (Rushmore). Just put it on now, god it's good. Also, ditto on Alone Again Or, but I didn't realise it at the time. Wes Anderson's soundtracks are just stupidly good.

And: Donnie Darko made me listen to Mad World - and (re)discover Tears for Fears - although I'm pretty sure I'd heard it before. King Creole by Elvis in King Creole, funnily enough.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Every previously released Elliott Smith song in Good Will Hunting.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bang Bang" from Kill Bill no doubt

Plus like every other song Quentin Tarantino's ever put on a soundtrack.

Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

A strong thirding of "Alone Again Or" - Love - Bottle Rocket.

I'll add "Waters of March" - Susannah McCorkle - The Comedian
and
"Fight The Power" - Public Enemy -Do The Right Thing

peepee (peepee), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wise Up" by Aimee Mann in Magnolia.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"shivers" - boys next door (dogs in space)
"concrete and clay" - unit 4 +2 (rushmore)
"needle in the hay" - elliot smith (royal tenenbaums)

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Jump Into the Fire" by Nilsson, to thread.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 19 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"Everybody Knows" - Leonard Cohen (Pump up the volume..)

Michael Dubsky, Monday, 19 January 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Fiona's version of Across the Universe in the otherwise underwhelming Pleasantville

"The Lady Loves Me (But She Doesn't Know It Yet)" from Viva Las Vegas (i think)

Most of the Magnolia soundtrack

"I Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Condition Was In" by Kenny Loggins (Big Lebowski)

tons of others. i wish i could get a job picking out the music for movies.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure if these count as songs really, but using Ligeti's choral pieces in "2001 : A Space Odyssey" was inspired. Apparently Ligeti sued Kubrick for using the music without permission, but I bet he got a whole load of fans as a result (including me).

"Papa Oom Mow Mow" in "Pink Flamingos" was great too cos I'd only heard the Ramones version before.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot Cool Jerk by The Creation (Home Alone).

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wash Away" by TSOL (Penelope Spheeris' Suburbia)
"Reach Out" by Cheap Trick (from Heavy Metal: the Motion Picture)
"Stroll On" by the Yardbirds (from Blow-Up)....which is actually just "Train Kept A-Rollin'" with different lyrics.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

more wes anderson
"ooh la la" - rushmore

and you've got to have some lynch

"in dreams" - blue velvet

metfigga (metfigga), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Even more Wes Anderson
Ramones -- "Judy is a Punk"

As for the reverse effect, Eminem's "Lose Yourself" was the main reason I went to see "8 Mile".

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Even more Wes Anderson again (from Rushmore, again): The Creation - "Making Time"
and courtesy of John Hughes, back when i was just starting high school, Echo and the Bunnymen - "Bring on the Dancing Horses" from Pretty in Pink.

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yer all gonna spit, but "Tere Bin Nahin Lagda" by Partners in Rhyme featuring Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in Bend it Like Beckham. Between that and the soundtrack to Monsoon Wedding, I got sort've rather into Indian stuff.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the dylan song that's at the start of the big lebowski - can't remember the name....

used brilliantly though.

big baby jesus, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll third the Screamin' Jay pick. I'll never forget hearing that when I saw the film in the theater, and promptly bought the single. "He's my main man!"

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Irma Thomas - "It's Raining" (Down By Law)

JSizzler, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The entirety of the soundtrack to Jarmusch's Mystery Train, especially "Soul Finger" by the Bar-Kays and "Memphis Train" by....is it Rufus Thomas? That whole soundtrack was such a great ear-opener for me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

....and the instrumental/score passages (by John "Lounge Lizard" Lurie) are brilliant as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Every Pray for Rain track I've heard ("Floundering", "Roadside Prophets", "Sid & Nancy"...)

"Fuel" - Idaho, from the "Floundering" soundtrack.

Morricone's Sergio Leone soundtracks - SCHWING! Have bought three versions of these scores. "Aces High", "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", "The Vice of Killing" - stupendous.

"Oh Girl" - Evil Superstars, "Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels"

Ivan Neville's "Why Can't I Fall In Love" from "Pump up the Volume"

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, the "Solaris" soundtrack - very Mum-ish effort - and all the Craig Armstrong score/soundtrack cuts. CA's "Romeo & Juliet" stuff is fantastic.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the soundtrack to un coeur en hiver with compositions by ravel. it's out of print now, so i got a different recording, but i may have to look for it used.

"P.E.T.R.O.L" - Orbital (from the Pi soundtrack)
"The Seed and the Sower" - Ryuchi Sakamoto (from Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence) - I think thats the right name for the piece.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" from the Donnie Darko soundtrack - I want to find out more about the artists who did that piece (whose names escape me all of a sudden)

Also, "Alone Again Or" - Bottlerocket

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Everlasting"- Manic Street Preachers, from "Was Tun Wenn's Brennt". Is it okay to hate them again?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 22 January 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Definetely "Mad World" from Donnie Darko. Thinking of it now has forced me to listen again to the MP3.

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 22 January 2004 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i wanna say "miss misery" but i'd heard it on the soundtrack well before i saw the fucking awful film

Popol Vuh - "Oh wie nah ist der Weg hinab" from "Heart of Glass"

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 January 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly had nevr heard "Born To Be Wild" until '81/82 when I caught "Easy Rider" on late-nite TV. Loved it; and loved it again years later when Albert Brooks re-used it to great satirical effect in "Lost in America".

Howbout a song that you hated until you saw it in a movie? Easy: "Sister Christian" in "Boogie Nights"

Scott Bloomfield, Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The original version of "Temptation" in "Something Wild." I had only heard the Substance version prior to that.

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought 'One Minute Warning' at the end of Ghost in the Shell was cool and was surprised that it was by U2.

fcussen (Burger), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I second the UK surf Pixies from Pump Up the Volume.
Also,
Neil Young- Philadelphia (Philadelphia)
Jon Brion- You Should Know (Punch Drunk Love)
Shudder to Think & Jeff Buckley- I Want Someone Badly (First Love, Last Rites)

mclaugh (mclaugh), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Leonard Cohen-Winter Lady (McCabe & Mrs. Miller)
Flatt & Scruggs-Foggy Mountain Breakdown (Bonnie & Clyde)
Byrds-Wasn't Born To Follow (Easy Rider)
The MASH-Suicide Is Painless (MASH)
The Henry Gibson songs from Nashville

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Holiday Road" by Lindsey Buckingham

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Erm, Mad World by Tears for Fears, in Donnie Darko. Well, the Gary Jules version, anyway.

The first time I'd actually /listened/ to it, anyway.

damian_nz (damian_nz), Friday, 23 January 2004 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The whole "First Love Last Rites" soundtrack is way better than the movie, which probably leads to a xpost.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 January 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the dylan song that's at the start of the big lebowski - can't remember the name....

"The Man in Me" from New Morning. Great song and album.
I'll second "Making Time." And these may not count, but the first time I heard the Who's "A Quick One..." and Jethro Tull's "Song For Jefferey" was on Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus (the movie).

Will (will), Friday, 23 January 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

"Once I Was," by Tim Buckley, used at the end of "Coming Home" (when Bruce Dern strips and swims out into deep waters).

"April Come She Will," Simon & Garfunkel ("The Graduate")

Jazzbo, Friday, 20 July 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

"Venus in Furs" by the Velvet Underground in Oliver Stone's THE DOORS.
Blew my adolescent mind.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 July 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

The Sly Stone version of "Que Sera Sera" at the end of Heathers

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

Funny, someone just mentioned in the "most beautiful songs" thread Tom Waits "Innocent when you dream", and I mentioned how I first heard in the Harvey Keitel/William Hurt film Smoke. The following day I bought Frank's Wild Years just to have it (and the whole album is great too, btw.)

Mark Clemente, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Brian Eno - "Needle In The Camel's Eye" - Velvet Goldmine!

admrl, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

To mention an obvious one: "O Death" and some other tracks from the "O Brother Where Art Thou" ST made a big impression.

Stretching from movies to TV: in an episode of "Millenium," James Carr's "Dark End of the Street."

Brad C., Friday, 20 July 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Brian Eno - "Needle In The Camel's Eye" - Velvet Goldmine

Same here! For that matter, "By this river" in Y tu mama tambien. I figured it was Eno when I first heard it.

For another Cuaron film, "In the court of the crimson king" in Children of Men (yea I know "how can this be???, I wasn't really familiar with them before).

Mark Clemente, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

"Beans and Cornbread," Louis Jordan, from Malcolm X

jaymc, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Those Mulatu Astatke tunes in Broken Flowers... the next day I bought the Ethiopiques series that features his work.

Mark Clemente, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Second "Madison Time." Hit it!

Heard the Flower Duet from Lakme in a couple of movies. That one definitely rates in the Most Beautiful Song thread, too. Gorgeous.

ellaguru, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

haha, I came back to this thread to see if I remembered to put Madison Time

Dominique, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Several tracks from the OMPS to "Henry & June"

christoff, Friday, 20 July 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Everything from the Akira soundtrack, especially Kaneda and Requiem, although I only grew to love them listening to the soundtrack independently of and a long time after I saw the film.

ledge, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yay "Madison Time"!

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 20 July 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)
