"real" hip hop production

ok, i know it's rockist etc but what comes to mind production-wise when you think of "real hip hop"? i think of premier right off the bat, then maybe like pete rock and then Diamond D's "stunts blunts & hip hop" but maybe that's just my age showing... anyway as much of I think of that as real, it's also a little meat n potatoesy bland like good, no question, but maybe like chuck berry or something in rock terms

basically it means 'dont be gay unless youre puffy'

see dre (from the chronic on) I see as being a little too self-contained - too much his own really identifiable thing - to be part of a "real hip hop" continuum

but then again i guess you could argue the same thing about premo

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

lil jon, dj paul & juicy j, dj toomp, carl mo

Dre because that's what hip-hop sounded like to me as a kid, on the radio. RZA's beats have always really captured an essence of something for me too.

Modern rhythms = Timbaland.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Beatnuts, V.I.C. & Godfather Don

angel duster, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Dre, Sermon, RZA, Premier, Prince Paul, Alchemist, Havoc, Beatnuts...

I think I'm supposed to leave out Timbaland, JayDee, Madlib, Mannie Fresh even though theyre just as great as the "real" ones

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i only meant it as a personal thing - like what pops into YOUR head when you think of "real" hip hop - not exactly a measure of greatness per se.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

mannie fresh is real!! big ballin is one of the rawest examples of hiphop ever

$$, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Spinna, Shawn J. Period, Evidence, Biz Markie, Large Professor, Scott La Rock, etc.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think of "real" anything anymore... :/

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

is that good or bad, do you think?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, GOOD!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

There are exceptions of course when discussing music in a more historal/roots-thereof context, but as far as just subjective choices of music, "real" is just a distracting meaningless adjective to me.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i hear ya... but i think i still do think a bit in terms of realness, but it doesn't have to do with how much i like something

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Mannie Fresh rules, I'm not denying that, but he and Timbaland sort of brought in a new sound after I was already into hip-hop. I think they make much more challenging music than the older cats and therefore "real" rappers tend to sound a little funny with their beats. The Hot Boys rapped like no one else and I love the style Cash Money brought into hip hop but unfortunately I think a lot of hip hop fans including myself were brainwashed over the years into thinking being "real" and being a NY style rapper are the same thing.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

This is sorta pointless but hip hop production "home" for me is Large Pro, Diamond D, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, and maybe RZA too.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You're sort of asking for the good-connotations "generic", right? I know exactly where you're coming from with the meat'n'potatoes thing though I know far too little to name any names.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott La Rock.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Jurassic 5 - Jurassic 5
Outkast - Speakerboxx/The Love Below (the best hip-hop album ever)
El-P - Fantastic Damage
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
MC Paul Barman - Paullelujah

I'm doing this just to annoy you (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who doesn't like 'Paul's Boutique' needs their head checked.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like Paul's Boutique, I find it a bit dull and pedestrian and the rapping isn't very good.

If we're talking good-connotation generic, surely Illmatic is a good touchstone? I mean, if you attempted to describe hip-hop to someone who'd never heard it before, they'd probably end up imagining something just like Illmatic.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If I was trying to describe hip-hop to someone who'd never heard it before they'd probably end up imagining something just like "Holiday Rap".

Nooo! DO YOU SEE? It's a really clever pun!!!!!!! I haven't heard it in about 4 years, so I can't remember if it's any good. Certainly would have been better as an instrumental.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

If you didn't get it, it's probably my ill communication DO YOU SEE????

Enrique (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I had that record

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)
