Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

pretty much the onion schtick....but man I wish there really was a website that had those reviews as it's recent reviews....Cockney Rebel, Ram Jam, and Pablo Cruise!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, they sure do.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

a mild chuckle or two. not worth the html time, imo.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i have to say, i'm impressed by their thoroughness.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

if they went to the trouble of doing the news page why didn't they do fake reviews???

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh, they make up for it with the MS Paint wizard ad

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And I was really looking forward to reading the "The Rapture: 'Echoes' Dance Music is the new ska" review! Fuckers

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that caught my eye first as well...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually the Dean's List and the Ratings Key are pretty damn funny... funnier than the rest of the above.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The worst thing about the parody page is the page title itself.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stylus parody can be but mere seconds away from publication.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

boy will it be as lame as this one?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll just be a blank page with "Nick Southall is a gay" written on it, so no, it won't be.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez! Harsh! I thought it was pretty damned clever.

I remember once stumbling across this 'zine in the East Village called "Bitchfactor" that was making fun of all kinds of indie scene stuff. They had a fake Matador ad that was making fun of then-Matador's sudden interest in putting out hip-hop.

The ad had a picture of Gerard Cosley all bling-blinged out, with a speech bubble saying "Railroad what? Bettie Ser-who? Nigga please!"

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

haha rap is funny!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

haha dance music--who likes that stuff?!?!

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, hands up who even knew sub pop was still putting out records? what is the point of this aside from biting the hand that feeds?

worst mid-size record label of the 90s?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i had to put "mid-size" so matos wouldn't immediately pop in with "grand royal"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

between the Postal Service, the Shins, and Hot Hot Heat, a lot of people know they still exist

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Namely Colin Murray and Zane Lowe.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you're going to have to provide your own rimshot for that one, I'm afraid

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Sub Pop is bling

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's just having fun with what is obviously a major touchstone for music geeks like ourselves right now -- there's no evidence of any real vitriol in there. "Biting the hand that feeds" is a bit dramatic, really. I mean, there are jokes at the expense of Touch and Go, Matador, their own artists -- and all of them come off as jovial scene-y ribbing.

Besides, when did everyone get so touchy and defensive about Pitchfork? Jesus.

And Jess, the point of the Matador parody I cited earlier had nothing to do with "rap" being "funny." It was a (dumb, sure) joke about Matador's sudden switch in output.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

and that's all it was, right?

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

well the problem with this parody isn't that pitchfork is the target, it's that it's terribly written (and crucially fails to even remotely sound like what it's supposed to be mocking)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

there is even a shot at Subpop itself in the rating system chart....like one of the really low ratings reads "Sub Pop record from the mid to late 90s"

Matador can't win....either they don't put out any rap/techno/nonindie whatever and they are "irrevelant" and "out of touch" or they put out ILM's beloved Dizzee Rascal and they are "trend hopping"....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

who's accusing them of trend-hopping, I wonder, though?

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

implied? or implode?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that's what Ben meant that the controversial Matador fake ad thingy was doing....(I haven't actually seen this so wtf do I know)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost to matos

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I was referring more to the Dizzee signing

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's obviously an affectionate jibe & I'm sure it was tossed together quickly.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have an old C/Z Records "Bruce Pavitt gave me head" T-shirt.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

gotch...I dunno...maybe I just assumed people had....maybe I'm secretly bitter and I'm projecting my feelings w/r/t Matador onto an imagined "other"....

actually, on the subject of Matador I think they've been pretty smart in their signings lately, have picked up some acts with some buzz and commercial potential like Dizzee, Pretty GIrls Make Graves, and Interpol....also the Mission of Burma reunion rec will prob. be a solid seller....I imagine that Malkmus and Cat Power are pretty dependable as well.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost once again, sorry I'll get the hang of this soon.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

sup pop is putting out some good stuff these days (big points from me just for the constantines). probably some bad stuff too, but i really can't be bothered to worry about that. i'd never seen the matador apology they link and that's really much funnier.

andrew s, Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought the matador apology was really stupid.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

haha matos i think yr "a lot of people" is overstated

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"sub pop: more than masonna, less than lil jon"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

but i did forget about the postal service

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I know for a fact the Shins have sold more than 200,000 albums (combination of both albums), and the Postal Service are probably in that range too. it's not gold or platinum, but for a label and music as circumscribed as Sub Pop and indie rock are, it's pretty big.

xpost

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say 100,000 people is a lot, anyway.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

also mr. 500-copies-dance-twelve-inch here isn't putting down obscurity, necessarily.

xpost. obv

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha I only know those figures because I just edited a Shins piece by Laura Cassidy that cites them)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

also, i'm somewhat amazed by those numbers...indie rock is back!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

no one thought you were putting down obscurity. I'm just backing up my statement. (c'mon, back that azz up! azz up!)

xpost: me too!

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shins outsell Memphis Bleek!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

sup pop signed wolf eyes and will be putting out their new record this year.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

'sup pop?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i am always amazed at why regular posters troll under assumed names when they do

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 23 January 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

embrace your assholisms, you fucking pussies!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 23 January 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

that's hard on the arms and legs though

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 23 January 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

is it anything like platonic blowjobs?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 23 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

what goes up must come down

His hair?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 January 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

TECTONIC blowjobs on the other hand... yeeeeeow!!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 23 January 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I think a DNA molecule has more twists and x-posting than this thread

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 23 January 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously nobody would do such a lame thing as to put a 5" x 5" piece of "art work" in a 12" x 12" package.

Sub Pop themselves did this with my vinyl copy of How it Feels To Be Something On

Kevin Erickson, Friday, 23 January 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ahem..

"Ur, I think the Mr. Dean's list was meant to be self-parodying all 'round."

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 23 January 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, i get it. Ha.

Sub Pop = weirdly consistent lately. Baptist Generals! Thermals! Kinski!

That Ugly Casanova record sounds worse every time I try to listen to it though

Kevin Erickson, Friday, 23 January 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno... twas funny to me... some of you folks have the humor of a pile of rocks. the ms paint wizard ad RULES.

"All content meant to be taken with at least the tiniest grain of salt. Sub Pop Records, 2004"
m.

ps relevant and indie labels... i'm not sure where to start on that.
pps are the same people complaining about packaging p2p addicts? just curious.

msp, Friday, 23 January 2004 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

A little too in-jokey, but I still like.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 23 January 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with whoever up there said they should have done some "funny" reviews as well, I mean someone obviously has a lot of free time on my hands.

The Thermals were excellent when I saw them last month, it made me nostalgic for an era of early 90s indie rock I didn't actually live through.

The !!! LP has a CD booklet in it, it looks stupid.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, hands up who even knew sub pop was still putting out records? what is the point of this aside from biting the hand that feeds?

1) how is PPitchfork the hand that feeds???

2) for the all-night radio album alone, Sub Pop's current existence is justified.

stevie (stevie), Friday, 23 January 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

5.) Any record that runs over the 45 minute mark is now considered a double record and must be judged by double record criteria. You are making a statement by doing this. Does your record slip neatly between Tommy, Exile On Main Street, The White Album, etc.? No, I didn't think so. Edit it. You too boring.

This one is good.

Jake B (elvissinatra), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What does All Night Radio sound like, Stevie?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 23 January 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

hey ILM! remember us?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 23 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

like the second beachwood sparks album, expunged of the country influence and with the wispy psychedelic effervescence amped to the stars,..;.

stevie (stevie), Friday, 23 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

No! Don't make fun of Pitchfork!! And there is nothing FUNNY about hip-hop conventions at all! Everything except indie rock should be taken with complete seriousness.

Sub Pop = rockists.

ILM, Friday, 23 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"The !!! LP has a CD booklet in it, it looks stupid. "
it's out?!? how is it?

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 23 January 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

When Sony did the vinyl for Screaming Trees Sweet Oblivion, they just packaged the record in a plain black jacket with a sticker on the cover listing artist/title, and stuck a CD booklet inside. Incredibly lame.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i just wanted to update a comment of mine upthread - as a result i was contacted by both the editor and publisher of Devil in the Woods and they're sorting me out. i'm hell of impressed by this and just wanted to (a) thank whoever gave them the heads up about my comment and (b) apologise for publically whinging about something that could easily have been sorted privately.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This thing cracked me up actually. I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to rockcrit mockery, I suppose.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant the !!! LP on GSL with 'Feel Good Hit of the Fall' etc on it. It has seven tracks but plays at 33 I think, ergo an LP. Apols for any confusion

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You started it.

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

You're being a jerk!

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't you go basically anywhere and read people make fun of Pitchfork for free? Why pay money for this?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It wasn't even very witty either! I'm sure it appeals to SA's readership which still finds Army of Darkness highly amusing.

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, i ponied up for a forum account there...

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My roomie reads the forum and there's a lot of funny stuff but it is populated by the biggest assholes. For example, they flip out at you if you repost an already posted link.
