playlist challenge: music to listen to on the airplane

ok I'm taking a longish airplane trip in a couple of weeks, and I wanna put some nice music in a playlist to listen to while I sit in coach. I'm thinking something that'll mesh well with the hum of the engines and the whole sense of dislocation and the view from the window and stuff. there'll probably be some botc on there, maybe some goldfrapp, matthew herbert etc etc. they don't need to all be electronic tracks, these are just the ones that come to mind now.

whaddya think?

D.O.A. by Bloodrock

That's about a car crash, not a plane crash. When I was about 8, my two older brothers used to hold me down and force me to listen to it. Harsh.

well thank you VERY MUCH then chad.

if you want something to go with the hums and noises then stick on a Pole album.

Deaprture Lounge's "Jetlag Dreams" -- all instrumental, dreamy, drifty and timeless-sounding.

massive attack's mezzanine is beautiful on a plane. i once played some low, and i kept on wanting to cry, so avoid that!

I am OBSESSED with having the right soundtrack for a flight. A few suggestions, if I may:

--If you have a "walkman" that will play cassettes, bring that along. During takeoff and landing, they don't let you use CD players, but I have never once had a flight attendant make me turn off my walkman during takeoff once I explain that it's just a cassette player. Takeoff and landing are, of course, the greatest times to listen to music--so to me it's worth it. You can always take out your CD player once you're "at cruising altitude."
--Be sure to get a window seat.
--I don't know if this is your taste, but my all-time faves for this experience are Loveless by MBV, Sound of Confusion by Spacemen 3, Nowhere by Ride, and Post-Partum by Les Innocents. Interpol is nice, too.
--As for electronic stuff, I would maybe do Spacetime Continuum...something that doesn't have a really insistent "beat." That would make me too antsy.

Each and everytime I fly,

"The Big Country" by Talking Heads

automatically comes on in my head.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 23 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

if you make a comp, it should have that underworld song on it with the lyrics that go "30000 feet above the earth is a beautiful thing". obvious, but nice.

tricky disco (disco stu), Friday, 23 January 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the song title "mmmmm, skyscraper i love you". can't believe i forgot that...

"Over the city in an airplane
I can see everything below
The houses they look so tiny
The cars look like dots
We've only got fifteen minutes to go"

The Beach Boys - Airplane

It's electronic too!

"Mr. Donut" by Saint Etienne.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, I was being a smartass;though DOA is agreat song(I am certain it is about a plane crash). How about Do Make Say Think "auberge le mouton noir"

chad (chad), Friday, 23 January 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Eight Miles High" Byrds
"Jet Airliner" Steve Miller
"Coming Into Los Angeles" Arlo Guthrie
"The Letter" Boxtops
"Leavin' on a Jet Plane" Peter, Paul & Mary
"This time Tomorrow" Kinks
...and I believe Bloodrock's "D.O.A" is about a plane, not a car crash: ie; "We were flying low and hit something in the air..."
But then I haven't heard the song since, maybe, 1973.

jimwentworth (wench), Friday, 23 January 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks everyone.

chad, do make say think is very good for airplanes I agree.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The in-flight radio can be rather good - on a recent KLM flight they played Felix Da Housecat "Bugged Out" in its entirity.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

really? I don't think air canada is that cool! it's gonna be diana krall and the royal canadian air farce all the way!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

David Byrne supposedly wrote the lyrics to "The Big Country" while flying over America. Maybe that was common knowledge, I dunno, but I think it's interesting.
