allmusic.com lists 67 seperate versions of this song. Which ones are any good? Which ones are fucking awful? Which one should I download after I've got the BJ Thomas original?

And so on and so forth.

They're all pretty awful, I'd say, BJ Thomas' included.

Agreed, they're all awful; if you MUST have one, pick Shonen Knife's version.

remember in the late 80s/early to mid 90s when indie bands doing mainstream/cheesey songs was kind of, y'know, funny, in an ironic way?
(lemonheads Mrs Robinson, the whole tribute to the Carpenters etc). i say fuck a shonen knife. and the 90s. toast the new millennium!

Weirdly enough, the Manic's cover of this is the second best thing they've ever done. The best obviously being their cover of "Last Christmas".

RE:"remember in the late 80s/early to mid 90s when indie bands doing mainstream/cheesey songs was kind of, y'know, funny, in an ironic way?"

It's not ironic if one A: actually likes the song they're covering (which Shonen Knife have stated they do) and B: makes a legitimate effort to do a good version of it (which they also do).

Tossing around and misusing the term "irony" to refer to anything with a sense of humor or that's unexpected, however, is very '90's. So toast the new millenium indeed.

I thought the Mrs. Robinson by the Lemonheads was a nice, relatively fairthful, not "funny ironic whatever" version....it was nice....I'll bet a million that Dando loves that song.

I'll second that. Mercury Rev's version is pretty great.

I don't know anything about Blowfly, but it sounds like they've copped a record called "Raindrops" by Keith and the Impact Allstars, Jamaican, early 1970s.
