music for dandies?

My friend is putting together a fashion/design show, and she has decided to go for the vibe of Paris in the 20s-style decadence mixed with a bit of opium-den seediness, but with a "modern edge" (I know, I know!). I have been drafted in to provide the soundtrack, but I am pretty poorly informed on that kind of stuff. I was thinking of throwing in some Herbert ("the audience" perhaps), a bit of Gotan Project etc, and some older material from the era. I suppose I am going for what I imagine the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge might have been like if it was put together by somebody cool, if you will. If anyone has any suggestions about what else might work to create that kind of atmosphere, I'd be really grateful... new or old music, all ideas welcome...

but my first post was serious!!

Ute Lemper sings Kurt Weill I'm thinking "Alabama Song" in particular. It's more cabaret than opium den, but it's atmospheric. Gershwin or Porter, too?

Air or Mono (not the JPN noiseband) might work, if you're looking for a "modern edge".

for some reason your description leads me to suggest "triumph" by the wu tang clan

Serge Gainsbourg!

I second SERGE!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 23 January 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But either mid to late 70's Serge or late 80's cheesy -disco-and-whores-Gainsbarre Serge

Dandy by the Kinks and/or Herman's Hermits.

Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, it's like decadent disco charleston....

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 23 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dedicated Follower of Fashion" by The Kinks would fit but it's not exactly decadent or opium-smelling. It is a cracking great record though.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Friday, 23 January 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I stand by my picture.

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan's recommendation of Dr. Buzzard 100% OTM.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tremendous stuff, thanks for all the suggestions. Anyone heard DJ Krush's "I Just Want to Touch Her (Stoned Jazz Mix)"? It's got a great the-clarinet-has-been-smoking-not-me languidness to it that might be just the ticket here... (and really simple but effective spinbacks)

Conor (Conor), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Is T.Rex too obvious for this?

anode (anode), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

not too obvious at all, although perhaps a bit more raucous than this lady wants it...

Conor (Conor), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

raucous

Raucous? Not if you put "The Slider" on there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe the odd Robert Palmer track, or Boys and Girls/Bete Noir era Bryan Ferry.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 24 January 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the slider, eh? duly noted, thanks Ned.

Conor (Conor), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
David Sylvian owns this. Esp? his track with Fennesz "Transit".

Anything by Japan

Something by The Modern for up-to-date tastes (Jane Falls Down and Industry scream of blonde girls in belts and sweater dresses dancing disinterestedly).

REALLY early Human League or Kraftwerk

Hounds Of Love-era Kate Bush

Patrick Wolf

Marianne Faithfull's interpretations of Brecht and Weill's work (the voice sounds so lived in it positively pisses over anything Ute Lemper could produce)

Pet Shop Boys and/or their collaboration with Liza Minnelli - her version of Rent treads the very fine line between unbearably moving and unintentionally hilarious.

klee (klee), Friday, 10 February 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Satie's GYMNOPEDIES.

Harold Budd.

And this beautiful collection.
