Blue 'All Rise' vs MN8 'I've Gotta Little Something For You'

two good examples of British male urban pop, several years apart - but which is better? I lean towards MN8 but am not sure why

was going to throw in 'Return Of The Mack' too but being a solo artist track i thought they may give it an immediate handicap/advantage

Blue's best track is "Fly By II" I think - from memory "All Rise" and MN8 are both pretty good, I'd have to download them to decide. Maybe I will do just that.

OK I did.

All Rise - much stronger than I remember, lots of different hooks, even the 'rap bit' is fairly serviceable, they keep the legal metaphor going too though it doesn't actually add anything. Danceable without being in your face, good stuff.

Little Something: I love the odd little calliope keyboard thing going on some of the choruses. Very aggressive, very immediate, the "Na na na" bits get on my nerves though.

Blue win just about.

i love all rise, i associate it w good memories wlegal student friends (!)
mn8 is pretty good too from memory! but for personal reasons i choose all rise.

minna (minna), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"All Rise", when I first heard it* I mistook it for a great lost Backstreet Boys song and you don't get praise much higher than that. MN8 still good though.

*er, at my kid sister's school's variety show thingy... they did a dance routine to it.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

MN8! I choose you!

There's a tacky, 'tough' pop-funk mid 90s moment that's hard to beat. Nah-nah-nah-nahnah-nahnah-nahnah.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the whirling music box type sound in the background on the MN8 one. 'All Rise' is okay but i've heard it sung in a crap pub by a guy who looked and sounded like Mark Knopfler, which kinda killed it a little.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 23 January 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

mn8 killer to dance too, but all rise has weepy sadness. i can't choose.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"All Rise" for the disarming gentleness of Lee's "Baby I *swear* to tell the truth..." bit. But then I would say that.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 24 January 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What about K7's "Come Baby Come"? I pick MN8 of the two though.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 24 January 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

MN8 easy. Lots of snigger-potential at the title, as i remember when it came out. Btw surely this sounds far more Backstreet Boys than 'All Rise'.

What year was the MN8? Blue's harmonica-type intro thing wins.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

MN8 was early '95. i wonder what they're all doing now.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 25 January 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably writing tunes for Blue.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 January 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

MN8 win. It's the Dane Bowers group, yeah?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that was someone else, wasn't it? More recent? 1998-99ish?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Another Level!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never forgotten the 'Freak Me' cover. Forgot the rest tho'.

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, 'Freak Me'. Second best radio edit ever, behind 'Simon Says'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I'm thinking of that quite good Another Level song then!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Another Level's 'Be Alone No More' vs Damage 'Love II Love' then?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Another Level had quite a respectable roster of guest appearnces considering the fact they were a B-list boyband, no? I love the fact that their success means that Ghostface Killah has been on a number one single in the UK.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Were Damage the most useless "urban" boyband ever?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'Guess I Was A Fool' vs. 'Wonderful Tonight', surely?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

in the 'worst single by these bands' battle maybe ('Ghetto Romance' was probably the best Damage song)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Another Level will always be k-classic for the Bump & Flex remix of "Bomb Diggy"!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

when I first heard Damage's ballad "Forever" I genuinely thought it was a cover of New Kids On The Block's "I'll Be Loving You Forever", so similar did they seem. does it get any lower?

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Terrible music, but at least "All Rise" has a nice harmonica part (I suspect the Norwegian producers of that record to be heavily influenced by their own production of Multicyde's "Not For The Dough", though, which featured one of the most well-known Norwegian harmonica themes ever)
