disco bongo style drums over the sound of crashing waves.... anyone know it?

OCP (OCP), Friday, 23 January 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll check while I'm at home later on. I think I've got it somewhere.

"Let's Go Swimming"? I think there's water sounds in that, at least.

chuck, Friday, 23 January 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that does't sound familiar, although those wobbling handdrums (or vertiginous cello) could be mistaken for waves. Chuck's answer seems obvious enough though.
i downloaded a thing called "Arthur on the Floor," which is at least three diff. mixes of "Treehouse," "Let's Go Swimming," and "Wax the Van." also found something called "Sketch for Helen." anyone know what this is?

Beta (abeta), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

When I read your description I think of Can's "Future Days."

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 23 January 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sketch for Helen was the cello piece that appeared on the Les Disques Du Crepuscule comp Fruit of the Original Sin.

Derrick May played it as an encore in Melbourne a couple of months ago. It was 5am on a Thursday morning and there were only about twenty people left in the club. His copy wasn't a white label but had a plain black label (I don't think it was an acetate, but could have been a test pressing or something) I asked him who it was and he said "I'll show you in a minute" and went off and posed for photos and signed autographs.

When he came back I guessed who it was and he seemed surprised but when I asked for the name of the track he kept putting it off. They were closing up and I didn't feel like hanging around like a fanboy so I left....

where there some singing?

Jens (brighter), Saturday, 24 January 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

has there been a thread about the rough trade russell reissue in feb yet? and did anyone put him on reynolds' hipster ballot thing?

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 24 January 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

where there some singing?

No, I don't think so.

What's the Rough Trade re-issue? World of Echo? I just got the Soul Jazz one a couple of days ago... I particularly like the non-disco cello tracks, surprisingly. Kind of like Nick Drake if he weren't such a mopey fuck.

OCP (OCP), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This is incredible news - are you trying to tell me that Derrick May has bought a new record?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 25 January 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Burn.

or alternately

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 25 January 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

World of Echo won't come out until May/June, i think. Rough Trade isn't doing it though. Audika is handling all AR stuff now, and the _Calling out of Context_ (which is coming out in Feb.) has parts of what was supposed to be the follow-up to WoE on it. It's not at all what you would expect it to sound like.

Beta (abeta), Sunday, 25 January 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

rough trade are doing it IN ASSOCIATION with audika.

has derrick may bought a new record?

i shouldn't think so, unless he had to replace his worn out copy of 'i feel love'.

What does it sound like, then?

OCP (OCP), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of twisty drum machine percussion with more or less pop song structures on a few of the tunes, and some vocal+cello n' echo tracks. It's great, especially "Calling All Kids" and "Get Around To It".

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

most desperate "need to own" of 2004 so far.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 26 January 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

Can anyone tell me where I might find the original version of Mimi Goese's cover of Time To Go Home Now.

Ever since I saw the Wild Combination doc (where the Mimi version nearly ruined me, placed as it was in the documentary around his death, so sad!) I've been wondering how the original might sound, but am failing to find any clear info on the modern internet.

Oh dear, that was worded really poorly, I mean of course, the Arthur Russell version of the song, which Mimi later covered and was used in the WC documentary.

I had a look in Hold on to Your Dreams, TTGHN doesn't appear in the discography or the index and the only reference to Mimi Goese is that she "covered his music". Not much help there.

seandalai, Thursday, 4 March 2010 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks Sean, I don't wonder if it's one of the many unreleased songs lying around on tape

three months pass...

does anyone know the song in the film "Wild Combination" here arthur sings about gazing at the lights on the new jersey shoreline?
