Kool Keith falsetto choruses VS Pharell falsetto choruses

Keith N Me with Princess Superstar is basically indistinguishable from every Pharell sung verse, right? I quit pretending to care about the Neptunes and modern culture in general sometime last august, so yeah, I'm sticking with Keith because at least he's not serious when he sings.

"Change Clothes" is the stupidest song since "SHop Around" by New Edition. The video has the highest concentration of horrid looking women for any rap video that could have easily afforded better. I mean it's a fashion show, basically the most kosher excuse to throw as many white girls into a rap video as possible (unless youre from Vancouver) but Jay and Pharrell have to stack it with these beanpole avant-ugly catpeople mutations. The asian girl looks worse than I did when I was still rubbing placenta out of my eyes.

Le Coq, Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Curtis Mayfield is a more valid comparison. Especially cuz it reaffirms how vapid Pharrell's voice and lyrics are.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Change Clothes video and song. People who reject the Neptunes tend not to like funky music in general, I've noticed. The models in the video are more idiosyncraticly attractive and interesting than the typical generic rap video object hoes. Though if you prefer body parts without faces and personality, then yes, you could say these women are relavitely horrid looking for the music video genre. It also does not feature predominantly white girls, its fairly multicultural. The joyful tone of the video makes the fashion world seem somewhat endearing, which Robet Altman tried and failed to do with Pret-a-Porter years ago. I get a kick out of the Kelly Ripa, Russell Simmons audience reaction shots and the shadow play cat fight from behind the curtain. Good fun. I like fun. I like Jay-Z and Pharell.

I haven't seen the video, but the song "Change Clothes" is definitely one of the few Jay-Z (let alone Pharrell-voiced) singles I genuinely enjoy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

change clothes grew on me SO MUCH

If I knew for certain that Chad Hugo was the musical talent of the pair I'd suggest Pharrell be thrown over a bridge.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The only Chad Hugo sans Pharell production, I know of, is the Kenna record.

theodore fogelsanger, Saturday, 24 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but does anybody know what their collaborative process is like? Does Chad grab the keytar while Pharrel thinks up the moronic lyrics or is Pharrell all up in there arrangement-wise?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

god who EVER thought pharrell was sincere?!

prima fassy (bob), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a reason I've compared these guys to Ween from the beginning.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

like even keith is at least sincere about being goofy

prima fassy (bob), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

on the "clones" dvd chad says pharrell comes up with the hook and the basic song structure, then chad gussies it up

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

well, since that "gussying" is usually the most novel part of a Neptunes production...HAPPY LANDINGS, PHARRELL!

"b-b-but Anthony, I was just frontiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii..." *splash!*

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Anthony here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand the revulsion, as it might be intolerable to have a conversation with Pharrel but I'm entertained by his arrogant pomposity as a performer. Plus, the chorus to Snoop Dogg's Beautiful is easily the best part as Snoop's verse flow fails the jiggy groove spectaculary, sadly.

theodore fogelsanger, Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Frankly, I knew this guy was no good once he showed up in a homage to Harlem Nights.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Forgot about the Harlem Nights homage. Somewhat indefensible. I suppose I must accept the fallibility of the great Pharrel, thought I want to believe this Nights reference from the Pass the Courvoiser Part Two video was something Busta Rhymes was boyishly enthusiastic/militantly insistent about, and the other dudes thought it was kinda lame but no one could say no to Busta. No one wanted to break Busta's heart. This is probably not an accurate scenario of the video's production. You're on your own Mr. Williams.

theodore fogelsanger, Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh theodore relax you low budget 'cultural oscillation analyst' - I have every right to like funky music while talking occasional shit about the neptunes; I did say avant-ugly jokingly but knew an eager lil champion like you would point out to me how refreshingly unconventionally pretty and 'interesting' they were anyway, and anyway, if you haven't noticed, hyperbole is my 'schtick'.

Anthony, true, Curtis is a hood comparison, but I compared Pharrell to Keith because Keith isn't good at it either. I actually like the Neptunes but am past trying to find a shabby charm or dignity in his singing so I can feel like I'm on top of things. And yes, maybe the sincerity comparison was a bad one - how about 'sexy'?

And everyone needs to stop catching feelings when people discuss the Neptunes, I'm mostly just horsing around and don't really care that much about the cultural trajectory of our favorite turtle faced beatsmith yadda yadda

Le Coq, Sunday, 25 January 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Pharrell plays drums and keys and sings and Chad plays guitar and keys but yes, how does the songwriting/beatmaking process unfold within

sam bloch, Sunday, 25 January 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember those trainwreck covers of "What's Going On" that came
out a coupla years ago? The "We Are The World"s of 9/11?

They were all awful, but the Neptunes' version was so bad it
was almost funny. The rappers were so lame that Fabolous dropped the
best verse and Eve came in second; and Pharrell's solo was an
unrelated rant bemoaning "the fact we're not more computer friendly
is crazy"

Apropos the question, I originally liked Pharrell's voice, but
it's started to really bore me; he seems to repeat himself.
Whereas I could never ever get tired of Keith.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 25 January 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pharrell, if he has anything to do with the Neptune production, is hit and miss on a bizarrely large level, but if he wants my respect, he better think of a lyric better than Keith's "What's that smell, down there in the basement?/ Two eyes missing, next day, WHERE YOUR FACE WENT?!?"

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
KOOL KEITH

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

People hated on Pharell pretty hard. Perhaps some time away from him will make them feel better. How coincidental....

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Also "Girl Let Me Touch You" has one of the best falsetto hooks ever.
