triple j hottest 100

as voted for by australian radio listeners. just the top 10 as it'll be completely horrible to list 'em all :

10 - powderfinger : love your way
09 - hill top hoods : nose bleed section
08 - john butler trio : zebra
07 - powderfinger : ??
06 - cat empire : hello hello
05 - coldplay : clocks
04 - powderfinger : on my mind
03 - white stripes : seven nation army
02 - outkast - hey ya
01 - jet : are you gonna be my girl

aussie bands as always predominate but, fer crissakes, 3 fucking powderfinger songs in the top 10 (i'm not sure about one of the titles and 'love your way' could have been at #7). i mean, powederfinger are ya know, completely, irrevocably shithouse.

hill top hoods and cat empire are aussie hip-hop : nose bleed is notable for it's lack of invention even if the sampled hook is nice enough and the same goes for hello hello which, at least, has a truely modern australian vocal feel.

the john butler track is sublimely ignorable left wing folkish bluesy rock and i think the coldplay track is the royksopp remix version?? 7 nation army was the least surprising thing in the list.

jet surprised at number 1 but that could just be some more audacious management fiddling of the voting even if they are very popular here and the song is a pleasant enough listening experience after all.

don't know how it outvoted hey ya, though, and, horror of horrors, how b&s' ...office, baby came in so low at 64 or something similar.

i was forced to tune in by visiting relatives. it was fucking torture.
hours and hours of "crunchy" guitars.

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

and morons gibbering

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And Jet are even worse than that

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking John Butler Trio, Alex in NYC (and his nail gun) to thread.

I knew JJJ was shit, but what a bunch of fuck fucks!

Jedmond, Sunday, 25 January 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't blame the jjj management for the tastes of the listeners. well, you can't blame them entirely. the voting methodology was pretty strict and tamper free but it required a definitive list of available tracks to be displayed. this meant that you could see all of your fav bands tracks in one hit and so choose them all.

i can honestly say i've never heard that JB trio track. and there was an awfull lot of sub metallica hard rock in the lower sections too.

phil turnbull (philT), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

That's just awful.

How did Jet get to be #1?

I hate that song so much!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

how did jet get to #1? the usual circle of management hype leading to radio airtime leading to listener acceptability leading to more radio airtime...

phil turnbull (philT), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

That list is why I stopped listening to JJJ two years ago. I have no faith in that radio station or the Australian music buying public anymore.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

This list finally helped me to understand why people were being driven insane by the "Hey Ya" tokenism on the Kish Kash >>>> Speakerboxxx/The Love Below thread. Which I will not link to, as I do not want to start that thread up again.

I wonder how much blame JJJ has to share for the poverty of Australian music.

Jedmond, Monday, 26 January 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

This list makes me hate all "let's listen to our own country's music!" type intiatives. That and Michel Dumbass Gondry doing a video for the shittiest band I can think of NZ producing thus far

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 26 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

what is Powderfinger?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 January 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

shit.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 26 January 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Boring Australian band no-one else cares about

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 26 January 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dull pub rock band bwith decent singer.
(although I do still like their breakthrough singles "D.A.F." and "Pick You Up".

Jedmond, Monday, 26 January 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe they were once grunge and are now "rock n' roll"

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

they're slightly less washed up than you am i

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 26 January 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
powderfinger are cool, deal with it.. theyre really quite talented, but you are people that don't like jbt, so i cant expect you to have any taste.. just dont act like because you dont like something its shit, we all know the only truly shit music is heavy metal..

mr danger, Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hello random teenage googler!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dear oh dear

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

nose bleed section rule

they are the best better then the rest of you wannabi singers out there

who cares, Friday, 16 April 2004 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

A debate raged at friend's party last night over who was the most punchable Australian singer: The result, a deadlock between John Butler and Paul Dempsey (from Something for Kate).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 16 April 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

In relation to Powderfinger:
"Dull pub rock band bwith decent singer."

I'd rather stab myself in the hand than listen to that twats' annoying caterwauling.

Seriously, the amount of songs that wouldn't piss me off on that list I could count with one hand and still have enough fingers left over for a variety of rude gestures.

The moral? Triple J sucks, as it has for some time. Except for the J-files, they can be good.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 16 April 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

here's the full list - it's even worse than i thought

96 Soggy Bottom Boys-Man Of Constant Sorrow(Skeewiff Remix)

Awwww. . . I stumbled across this song (or at least a different Skeewiff version of it), and kind of liked it!

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 25 December 2009 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

. . . Oh, I see. Then the "Soggy Bottom Boys" vocals start. That's a shame . . .
