Mike Connely sez, "Morly Grey - The Only Truth - The psych record I have always wanted. Flowing amazingly from heavy rockers to deep pysch swirl, this album is a total journey. The 17 minute title track is nothing short of perfect. This rules. "

So tell me about it. Is this an accurate summation? Are there other, better records? Is this old or new?

eh, ignore this. google gave me all the information i need.

unless you want to persuade me that it's worth the $20 for the Italian reissue...

I have the Morley Grey album. It's pretty great! Your basic chugging guitar-heavy psych rock, with wiggy solos and so forth. I guess the band were Christians or something. Or so I've heard tell. I've never actually paid attention to the lyrics. However, I'm not so sure this would be the first thing I'd recommend to someone who was beginning to delve into the more obscure areas of 60s psych. You gotta pick up those 13th Floor Elevators albums, Ian!

The side-long cut is ok. It's sort of like an "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" redux, though, complete with a crappy drum solo towards the end that kind of kills the momentum. The riffs are even a bit similar, come to think of it. I actually like the shorter songs on the other side a bit better, I think.

That vinyl reissue on Akarma is really a wonder to behold, though. They even reproduced the big fold-out poster that came with original issue of the record!

it's generally pretty mellow post-garage psych stuff, long songs, jesus themes, lots of clean 'west coast' guitar work. i really like it, but i've seen alot of references to it as 'the best psych album of all time' and so on. which is crap, but it is worth hearing.

(the side-long cut is nothing like "in-a-gadda-da-vida," dammit!)

i almost won a lot of 13th floor elevators LPs on ebay, but someone outbid me at the last moment. bastards. but they're DEFINITELY on the list of stuff to get.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 25 January 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

come on, ynf, it is too!

similarities:

1. side-long
2. crappy drum solo towards the end which darn near kills the thing

see!

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 25 January 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ynf, have you heard the Search Party record? I've always wondered about that one.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 25 January 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

your points are correct, broheems, but having heard so many side-long cuts with crappy drum solos i guess i consider them each a unique facet in a massive, shining jewel - of side-long cuts with crappy drum solos.

yeah, the search party album is pretty great - folk-psychy, christ-themed mellow stuff with some really beautiful songs and female vocals (the male vocals aren't bad, either). side A is really strong, side B lets up a little bit and gets more 'songwriter' in style. it was worth $20 to me, but i'm pretty much down with the jesus-psych thing inasmuch as my meager budget allows.

I have to smile a little when I read reviews of the Only Truth- Morly Grey. Most are pretty good so naturally I like those. The comments about "crappy drum solos" and Jesus music are pretty rare actually.
The album cover and "deo valentae" confused a lot of people.

Holy shit! the bassist for Morly Grey!! Hey Mark, howcum you guys didn't make another record?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 29 December 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Actually, we did record another record. There is a side that was recorded for the Only Truth but it was never released because we had to switch drummers after the album was recorded. It was going to be called the "First Supper" but we went back in the studio to record a new side with our new drummer Bob LaNave. That was the side that included the "Only Truth". We renamed the album at that time.

Sundazed did a sweet-lookin' 2LP and CD reissue of this. Authorized. Even considering buying the expensive vinyl because bonus tracks.

scary-cat-mascot-costumes-for-kids2.tk (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 19 December 2010 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

I bought it on vinyl - and it's fucking amazing (apart from the slight noise at the beginning of three sides - possible due to the coloured vinyl)..

The extra tracks are worth it alone.. Quality package...

Deluxe Merseybeat Wig (Jack Battery-Pack), Sunday, 19 December 2010 07:59 (fifteen years ago)

oh well, this was on my "hope someone is going to reissue it" list: now waiting for a proper re-release of Leigh Stephens and Top Drawer too!

Marco Damiani, Sunday, 19 December 2010 11:47 (fifteen years ago)

Um which Leigh Stephens? Because Sundazed did "Red Weather," too.

i just got the sundazed reissue, it's dope, especially the side-long track. it's a little short though for $20.

what was their big song, though? i grabbed it because i heard a song on my friend's pandora (i think it was on like led zeppelin radio or something) but now i can't seem to remember which track it was?

the late great, Thursday, 12 July 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

the side long track reminds me more of some sort of chill ash ra tempel or far east family band thing than iron butterfly
