latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

How on earth does Kylie Minogue take long to get into!? Its great accessible awesome disco-pop!

Unless you were joking, and in that case I'm dumb.

djdee2005, Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, if you find Minogue takes multiple listens, I'd be interested to hear what hits you right away.

djdee2005, Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I was totally pro-Light Years but I found Fever really samey and innocuous at first and then after a year I suddenly realised it was the most gloriously linear sparkly scrunched-up-bacofoil-spectacular flimsy spangle of all time and now it is my favourite of hers. Body Language still totally perplexes though, perhaps I am hoping I will come round to this also, but doubt it.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

can 'tago mago' (for the second half)

mindflayer 'it's always 1999' (because that much mindflayer in one sitting, without a break to flip, is just a little too much)

olivia tremor control 'black foliage' ('sink in properly' ; with listening over and over and over all the self-referential shit is much more easily noticed. drugs also help.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

FOO FIGHTERS

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

aja, you are ridiculous. both bleach and foo fighters are totally accessible goodness from the start. bleach not so much in a pop way, but in a more 'bang yr head' kinda way.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Theoretically someone who came into Nirvana through Nevermind or Unplugged in New York could find Bleach hard to get into.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but it took me a while to relize that. When I first got FOO FIGHTERS I would only listen to about half the songs on there before I started listening to that album over and over everyday for a couple of weeks. Bleach I thought was ok the first time I listened to it. Then, finally I came to appreciate it. That's what I meant by my post.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

faiiirrr enough.

almost anything by the vibracathedral orchestra falls into this category, if yr not prepared for it.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

flux :: uncarved block

antony and the johnsons :: s/t

three mile pilot :: chief assassin to the sinister

william (william), Sunday, 25 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm finding the new Xiu Xiu album, Fabulous Muscles, bloody hard work so far - but it's very early days I guess.

Also, Suede's Dog Man Star took ma absolutely ages to get into when it came out, but now it's by some margin my favourite of their albums so I guess it was worth the travail...

Tricky - Pre Millenium Tension

Jedmond, Monday, 26 January 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The slowest for me was, possibly,- no definitely, because I'm not sure how to spell "prominently", maybe I got it right, or wrong, who knows...Anyhow, it's an album by The Bukinghams - Not Lindsay, but the from-Chicago Buckinghams of the second half of the sixties, possibly 69-ish called... Will you pardon me while I go and get it...............................................................................OK, it's "Portraits". Here, on the cover you have these guys in civil war (union) army drag, then you see on the cover two of their big A.M. hits "Susan", and "Hey baby, they're Playing our Song", which, of course, were what I expected of these guys, BUT...
the rest of the album is a drug-oriented, fade in and out wah wah sound. That's OK with me, but totally unexpected of the genre. I put it on the shelf for a long time, but picked it up at a future point of reference and have never put it down. It's dated now, but I'm still thinking that way-back-when it was ok, but in the in-between years, became much cooler. You can find it in the Columbia catalogue, but you can't have my copy. Just too good. By he way, on the back cover the band is decked out in Rebel uniforms. go figure. Good listening though.
Another difficult to figger, but great album is Sgt. Pepper.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 26 January 2004 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

when i first heard it a looonnnggg time ago, the Clash's first album took a dozen listenings before I "got it": but then I was irrevocably converted.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Clash" rule the earth

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 26 January 2004 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Talking Heads - Fear of Music
Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 26 January 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Meadowlands" by the Wrens. It sounded like nothing at first, but the more I play it, the more it sticks to my ribs. Also I thought Flying Burrito Brother's "Guilded Palace of Sin" was a piece of faux country schlock for like twenty years until one day I put it on again and it sounded fantastic. Now I love it. That one's probably just me, though.

Not That Chuck, Monday, 26 January 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

47. Any of A Silver Mt. Zion's three albums
48. Slint -- Spiderland

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus - "Oskar Tennis Champion"

Stephen R., Monday, 26 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"can 'tago mago' (for the second half)"
nonsense, the second half of tago mago is where i first found appeal in Can, it was only after i fell in love with the nutso delay stuff that i came to appreciate just how funky they are.
for me, Atari Teenage Riot's 60 Second Wipe out took a long time to sink in. i knew that i liked it right off the bat, but i wasn't yet accustomed to such unbridled noise, so i listened to it uncomfortably for the first 5 or so times until eventually i succumbed to it and started breaking lamps, putting holes in the walls, etc.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think ATR tends to be quite great the first two times you hear it but you wouldn't want to hear it many more times.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like 60 Second Wipeout a lot more now than when I first heard it.

Mouse on Mars 'Idiology'

it has gone from unlistenable wierdness to overly eclectic curious oddity to one of my fave records of all time.

hmmm, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say 70s Bowie in general.
