i know andy k was loving this guy; i heard a bit of it in the shop and seemed at least as good as villalobos, why no ilm chat! is it not v good then

prima fassy (bob), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It IS good! Bouncy, kinda tracky melodic techno with goth undertones that positively shimmers. I guess it's not too different from his other stuff, but I like it a lot. I think this record undeservedly slipped under a lot of people's radars.

You intrigue me with this description.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

goth? i thought this was actually quite jazzy compared to the recent kompakt vibe! maybe because i'm fixated on "byrthe"?

vahid (vahid), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

but yeah, shimmers it does. this guy is golden.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

He's thickened up his sound like Jonas Bering and a few others. It's significantly beefier (beats hit harder, synths more likely to play stabby notes than drawn-out ones), but it's also interesting how most of the album tracks have higher BPMs than the older vinyl material (or am I imagining this?). Though I do like the album quite a bit, I don't think it's as good as a compilation of the three Kut Pulatin 12"s (the Festplatten 12" has a couple great tracks as well).

There's a track on the album that fits in with Superpitcher's
"Heroin" (and a couple other one-offs from that group of people) as something that would fit in the To Live and Die in LA or Thief sdtks -- I love that type of thing.

Dunno about the goth tendencies. Koivikko can be dark, for sure, but he's never quite been Lawrence or 240 Volts-level creeps.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 26 January 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Byrthe is classic! For some reason I don't really slot Koivikko in with the Kompakt crew. I think his output is very compatible with that stuff, but it seems less pop/airy and more muscular/driving. Like parallel lines in the same direction or something...

Philippe, Monday, 26 January 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(or am I imagining this?)

nope, it's true.

salmiakki was one my favorites last year (even though it came out in dec i think). my only criticisms are that the bpms are a bit high and it's harder that i normally like my techno, but it's extremely melodic and koivikko uses a really nice sound palette. kind of an arovane does techno...his early singles are ace, too. i don't buy the goth descriptor. i understand it, but i think it sells this music (lawrence, mayer, et al) short.

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 26 January 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, ok well maybe goth is the wrong term...He's certainly noirish then.

Philippe, Monday, 26 January 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Koivikko´s doing a great job! I like his tunes a lot!
There are some interesting mixes at his website:

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i blessed this at home with my own vocals

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

From the 100 minutes mix, there´s a true classic track: Kosmos: "Kosmoska". It´s Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic) & Jimi Tenor project. I would like to find more in this vein. Anyone?

thanks, tim!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Tim, the Sami Koivikko live set is just amazing. It builds, becomes more and more tense and exciting - just fantastic. And I love the way he uses reggae-influenced on-beat keyboard sounds to provide that lilting, bouncing thing that works so well in microhouse. Boy, this has sure brightened my Monday!

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 3 April 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

An underated producer for sure.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 06:47 (twenty years ago)

willem -- (willem), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 08:43 (twenty years ago)

I'd forgotten how ace the Hot Pepper mix is. So huge-sounding yet so intricate, it's such a great extended display of maxi-minimalism. Beeze & Schmitz's "Meander" is too too good.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 April 2006 05:31 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

Found Sami's mixes; Orange Border, 100 minutes, Hot Pepper, Deep Attack and Eucalyptus again! Forgot how freakin' awesome there were. That period was so great for dance music.

mmmm, Saturday, 20 November 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

Agreed. Orange Border and Hot Pepper were particularly good. This was also the time of some fantastic schaffel mixes. I can post, if there's any interest.

paulhw, Saturday, 20 November 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)

I lost Hot Pepper some time ago, but it was an absolute favorite of mine.

Tim F, Saturday, 20 November 2010 05:47 (fifteen years ago)
