"The Strokes are the Velvet Underground what Oasis are to the Beatles."

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

IT'S NOT A CLICHE IF YOU'RE THE FIRST PERSON TO SAY IT, YOU FUXOR!!!

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything that uses the term "derivative" in a deragatory way.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on, it's the lazy comparison double-whammy of apocalyptic boredom!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I never overhear ANYONE talking about music. I think I was brought up to well and don't know how to eavesdrop. :(

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Misspelled retorts.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

PS: yr in "good company", Kate

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything which is a one-liner digest of a longer and more idealogically more complete assesment is going to sound lazy when quoted. And again, it was within context of the apocalyptic scale hype that was going on at the time. I could care less who else quoted me on it (at least some people had the dignity to email me and ask) because I still agree with the original sentiment.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

mathematically speaking then, also:

Strokes x Beatles = Oasis x Velvet Underground

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the quote does work if it's in the context of "tired cynical writers dismissed Oasis because said writers couldn't dig deeper than 'they're aping the Beatles'... [etc]" (not that I like Oasis all that much)

I really wish people would stop picking on the Strokes. They're getting blamed for everything; the Convenient Rock Scapegoat to end 'em all. Pop kids hate 'em, indie kids hate 'em, they're all-purpose. I expect a Protocols of the Elders of Casablancas by 2010.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I back up Kate, with the (implied) postscript that "Velvet Underground" includes Lou Reed/Television/Feelies New Yawk Rawk in general et alia and "Beatles" includes Creation/Wings/Rutles, you know...

She's on a more accurate critical track than someone claiming that the legitimate heritage of Western music is tonally-based, no names mentioned.

Kate, assuming you're a "she", unless you play keyboards for Jethro Tull.

t\'\'t = Quod Erat Demonstratum

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Pop kids love them!

(Really! Strokes fans on ILM include me, Strongo, Ronan, Edward O i think... lots more too)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Indie kids who aren't very good at being indie kids love them as well!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Something about Johnny Cash being real country or whatever. I've heard this on many, many occasions.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I was more going by the Popjustice mode of pop kid; ILM's sphere of pop is a strange and wondrous and entirely different thing

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Popjustice is easily as indie as ILM Nate - Franz Ferdinand and the Scissor Sisters get mad love there!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(returns from new answers page)

OK maybe it isn't quite as indie as ILM.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You know how some people think the NME is trying to kill indie by only championing its worst acts?....

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, as for The Strokes, Hot Hot Heat are a lot better, sounding like Strokes would have if Ben Folds had been their singer/songwriter :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No, "most cliche", not "dumbest", Geir.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Pop kids love them!

But I actually have a pop kid T-shirt dammit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino has figured out the only way to make sense of NME.

Jedmond, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate = OTM X 100

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Cliche...

"Their earlier stuff is better" (translation: "I liked them before you")

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

So is it a cliche to say "I HATED them before you" then?

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who says anything about how great the 80's revival is.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost everything ever said about Nirvana (even though they're still one of my favorite bands). Especially everything ever said about their Pixies (another favorite) influence.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Talking to my weed dealer (hence monosyllables), who's also a lawyer...
WD: I remember punk! All this energy off the streets! Working-class energy!
DQ: Mm-hmm...
WD: It was raw, street-level!
DQ: Raw?
WD: Yeah, they couldn't play slick, sophisticated crap, just good, basic stuff!
DQ: Good?
WD: (pauses)...It was NECESSARY!!!

dave q, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't overhear but heard it:

when I was looking at some books at a charity shop this woman talking to the man in the shop about how awful today's music is.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Just now, after a Rapture set (possibly a bit more blindingly obvious than cliched):

'I reckon the DFA might be having a bit of influence on their sound, I can 'ear it coming through'

Ferrrrrrg (Ferg), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

haha officially a pop kid now I guess Tom? can't really deny it I suppose!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"[indie band] are authentic."

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't authentic much more often used in regards to blues or other roots forms than indie?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

authentic indie? surely some mistake?

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"It's all about the music, man."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)
