Do you ever make a conscience decision to get into a genre?

I can think of two ways to discover a new genre or sub-genre of popular music.

1. Find an artist that you like and explore related artists.

2. Learn about the existence of the genre and decide to research the genre as a whole, thus leading to individual artists.

Which is the usual approach for you and does one have benefits over the other?

More importantly, is this a remotely interesting question?

Did I spell 'conscience' correctly?

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps it was not 'conscience' you wanted to spell?

Do you mean conscious decision, as in you chose to get into the genre?

Or do you mean conscience decision, as in, you think it is morally the right thing to do to get into a genre?

maybe a 'conscience' decision would be like: *turning on the news* 'oh shit, johnny cash is dead, man i feel so guilty about not buying any of his records while he was still collecting royalties'
*goes down to the store and buys five*

My conscience is always telling me to go check out electroclash.

sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ouch ouch, hold your fire!

yes, yes, that would be "conscious" as in making a conscious choice.

I knew that looked funny.

Ok, resume.

I've made conscience decisions *not* to get into certain types of music, but never one to actually listen to a kind of music. Except for every now and then when I think it's sexist how many more males I have in my collection than females. And then I get over it.

the river fleet, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ, 'conscience' appears in the title. Now I have to wait for the thread to work its way down the list and out of sight. However, that may happen in short order...

So no one post on this thread anymore. please.

You could try shouting for a moderator. But I actually think it's an interesting topic right now.

Once a year I buy a reggae or dub album. I always wind up regretting it.

Learn about the existence of the genre and decide to research the genre as a whole, thus leading to individual artists.

i've done this with all manner of 60s genres, like psych/beat and girl groups and northern soul. it becomes hard to focus on one artist when there's so much good stuff on all manner of compilations..

Like all good Western liberals I have made a conscious and conscience decision to 'get into World Music' - luckily the excellent CDs make up for the ultra-generic impulse.

i do this about two or three times a year with jazz.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

At some point in high school (already liking Buddy Rich and having a Miles album I didn't get) I decided to go to the store and get a jazz record and just go from there, which turned out to be Mingus 'Blues & Roots'.

I guess I did more of #2 with drum n' bass, and came home with a Photek record.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i am trying with grime but i dunno. a handful of great tunes, incredible radio sets and er...i'm still not really feeling it. maybe its cos i am so divorced from the context.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Well a friend fucked me into listening to Dizzee ( Sorry for the rehash). I got sucked in by Photek also, and NoUturn, and Metalheadz. SHIT HAPPENS.

Well, as I think I've said before, when I started salsa dancing (which I hardly ever do anymore, sadly, though some day I expect that will change), I consciously decided to listen to just a little more of it than I felt like listening to, in order to immerse myself in it (in order to become a better dancer). It's not that I didn't like it almost as soon as I started learning to dance to it, but I would not have listened to it quite as much as I did, if I hadn't done it itentionally. (I don't know how long this went on, and I wouldn't say I do this now.) To some extent I have gone on to try to "conquer" it as a genre.

Similarly, with Arabic music, I knew I'd heard some Arabic music I liked, but I didn't know who it was, so I guess I was picking things up from the genre end. The guy who sold/loaned me tapes would often do the work of finding similar artists. "This singer sounds a little like [someone else I like], try this." And he also gave me an introduction to the canonical artists.

I forget exactly what I said I planned to get into in 2004, but I know I said something about Afro-Colombian music from the Pacfic coast of Colombia, which I don't really know anything about, so that's going to be a matter of picking things up from the genre end. All I'm going to do is buy a couple compilations.

Spanish guitar..but I always end up sith some matador singing YAAA YAAA MBYAARRR. I guess one genre does not fit all...

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I do this sometimes, but mostly it's centred around a particular band rather than a whole genre. E.g. my foray into sludge-metal was centred around Tool (thusly I came out with Neurosis, Isis and Norma Jean).

Josh Love is sooo OTM!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh that's right, yes, many failed kind-of-trying to get into jazz attempts. Same for: trying to get back into hiphop, which usually results in me becoming hostile toward it. Right now it's more of an expanded: trying to get back into any contemporary African-American pop music, R&B/Soul/hiphop (and I don't care if that means I have to buy things that are a little retro), which is broad enough that it's doable.

But in all these cases, my commitment doesn't run that deep. It's closer to, well, let's give this thing a try again.
