Vote for the best Rap (useful term because it covers Hip Hop, Grime, & Dancehall - but no instrumental stuff) Album of the year.

Assign your 10 votes like so: 5 votes maximum per album, 1 vote minimum - so you can vote for only 2 albums if you want.

I promise to tally the votes in a weeks time.

Outkast: Speakerboxxx/The Love Below - 2

David Banner -- Mississippi
Bubba Sparxxx -- Deliverance
Outkast -- Speakerboxxx/Love Below
50 Cent -- Get Rich or Die Tryin'
Bad Boys II soundtrack

Dead Prez would be on that list had they released the REAL album they made, called RBG. Still not sure why it didn't come out. Was really dark, but entertaining in spots.

well, if we're including dancehall as rap (think reggae chat may well have prefigured hip-hop, but not getting into a debate on US cultural imperialism here)

1) Ward 21 - U Know How We Roll (by a mile now)
2) Vybz Kartel - Up 2 Di Time
3) Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner
5) Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
5) Fallacy - Black Market Boy

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's just 'albums with MCing on' Dave, hence my Soca vote.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... I didn't vote for Dizzee cos I never think of him as rap. An oversight. Oh well, it's not like no other fucker's voting for him.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

To get pedantic, the following albums fit more in broader Hip Hop category than rap per se:

1 Buck 65 - Talkin Honky Blues
2 Panjabi MC - Beware
3 Black Eyed Peas - Elephunk

Crap, I don't know. I didn't hear much hip hop last year that REALLY made me whatever.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Best rap album = best album with predominantly MCed vocals.

I chose to use rap over hip hop because I wanted to have people include any album with MCing without people squabbling over genre details (so Soca Gold 2003 is a luverly choice).

And I chose rap over MCing because, although it suggests "US cultural imperialist domiance" it tweaks people who always inform you that we shouldn't call it rap music (everybody knows genre names should designed to irritate the musicans who work within the genre - why I loved the term trip hop so much - descriptive and it pissed Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky off) but hip hop (even if I do the same, pissing a rockist friend off by refering to his rock collection as sing music).

Kool Keith's "The Lost Masters" is a collection of outtakes, but I'm not sure whether the outtakes are from just his previous album or his total career.

The Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems 2003 - 4
Jay-Z - 3
Black Eyed Peas - 1
50 Cent - 1
Bubba Sparxxx - 1

(Note: you could aggregate the score for my first choice with the scores for Ragga Ragga Ragga! 2003, since it contains many of the same tracks, and more besides ... hence it's bettah!)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

OOPS I meant Ragga Dancehall Anthems 2003 not Ragga Ragga Ragga 2003 jedmond - if you're not aggregating that is, please switch my two points!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

David Banner -- mta - 4 Kayne West - I'm Good - 2 Black Eyed Peas -- Elephunk - 2 T.I. -- Trap Muzik - 1 Freeway -- Philadelphia Freeway - 1 (nb these are the five albums from my p&j ballot, with roughly proportional points to the ones I gave there. Also note that they are actual rap, unlike say Outkast. If I wanted to go with a broad defintion, of albums which included rapping then I'd also have had to include R. Kelly and Britney Spears)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Also note that they are actual rap, unlike say Outkast

Are you saying that Speakerboxxx is not a rap album?

Jay-Z, Black Album - 2
Aesop Rock, Bazooka Tooth - 2
Outkast, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below - 1
Dizzee Rascal, Boy In Da Corner - 1

Almost in there: Viktor Vaughn, Lyrics Born, Prefuse, DM & Jemini

The Bobby Konders is easily the most all-encompassing dancehall mix but the mixing disappointed me and Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems 2004 has whole songs and really picks the most definitive pieces IMO. Both are cool though.

Also not rap: Prefuse, Aesop, Dizzee, Har Mar Superstar, parts of Bubba Sparxxx, parts of The Black Album, Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Life After Death (but not Ready To Die), Majesticons, Puff Daddy (but not P. Diddy), Enter The 36 Chambers (too many people on it!), The Beastie Boys (they're white, duh!) but not Eminem, Dre (gangsta was a sellout!), Hot Boyz (that's not music, its just noise!), Tom Petty (who does he think he's fooling?).

Chuck, your points have to add up to 10. yours add up to 16.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops! I didn't see that part; I was wondering why the points assignment seemed so random. (Plus, I've been correcting math on 725 pazz and jop albums for the past month, if that's any kind of excuse.)

Anyway, ignore the above and reassign my points as follows, I guess:

David Banner - Mississippi Screwed and Chopped - 3
Ying Yang Twins - Me and My Brother - 3
Buck 65 - Talkin' Honky Blues - 2
Bubba Sparxxx - Deliverance - 2

chuck, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ying Yang Twins Me & My Brother 4
Panjabi MC Beware 2
Triple Threat Many Styles 1
Dizzee Rascal Boy In Da Corner 1

David Banner/Michael Watts "Mississippi: The Screwed and Chopped Album" 1

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I never heard that DM & Jemini album. I keep thinking DM is Danja Mowf from I think Virginia. Does anybody remember that guy? Anyway, I think DM & Jemini is something I might like, and might have been on my list in an alternate universe. Also, Dizzee is 2004 for me since I just got it and besides it just came out here.

If not Is, one day I will proof read one of my ILM posts and the world will end.

Jedmond, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

any hip-hop chart comp from this year will do just fine.

in retrospect Crunk and Disorderly shoulda been on my list too, I think except I never saw it at a discount price and for a sampler comp it SHOULDA been so fuck it.

5 - Non-Prophets - Hope
5 - Brother Ali - Shadows On The Sun

(I love Dizz, Jay, and others but I figured I'd vote all politico.)

ben welsh (benwelsh), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG is the Brother Ali good? I love all the songs I've heard by him, and he's pretty ignored.

sym (shmuel), Friday, 6 February 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, it's a real solid album. Very well rounded, like 15 good songs. He's a very strong lyricist and songwriter. Nearly everysong has a good hook and he does a lot of different things (battlerap, story tell, crack jokes, etc.) very well.

The beats were done by Ant from Atmosphere and I think it's his best (and certainly most consistant) work to date.

I would heartily suggest you purchase/download it. If you like what you've heard so far, you're sure to like the album.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Friday, 6 February 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)
