Jay-Z: Objectively Best Rapper EVAH?

As proven by this thread: Top 100 Jay-Z tracks
I don't think you could make a top 100 song list for almost any other rapper. In fact, there are only very few acts that we could make one for at all. So does that objectively prove he's the best ever?

Because I feel that ILM spends far too little time discussing Jay-Z, of course.

sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No, because he's an annoying ugly git. If I make a song as bad as "Hard Knock Life" can I snog Beyonce too?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I guess this question is settled.

sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

damn straight.

hmmm, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

No, because of that Austin Powers impression. The prosecution would like 212 other offences to be taken into consideration as well.

You people are doing this wrong. Damn you all to hell.

i can't claim to be a rap expert or anything, but, much and all as i love jay z,i think he's pipped by biggie, eminem, and several of the wu tang, and he's never made an album as good as illmatic...
he's still great though

robin (robin), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

he's RUBBISH!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

He's not rubbish but he's definitely overrated. More stuff like "Money Ain't A Thing", please.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

at the moment he's atrocious - his flow sucks, he sounds like he needs a good decongestant plus he looks like he has down's syndrome!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

if he had a 3rd album as good as Blueprint or Reasonable Doubt, maybe. But he's released about 3 very average albums (yes, including Black album)...great flow etc, but just chooses some bad ideas. guns n roses, change clothes, the "oh behave" business. awful.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think its kind of crazy to pick one rapper as the "best EVAH" but I can't think of too many that were as well-rounded as he was. So while he isn't the rapper I listen to the most and probably not MY favorite EVAH, I think "objectively" he definitely could be the best EVAH. He could do the commercial AND the street shit as good as anyone. He could battle-rap as good as anyone (important within the hip-hop society), and he was smart. And smart means clever, funny, entertaining, all that shit - no matter how good or bad his choices in beats may have been over the years. So eh.... sorry, I think maybe.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

dave stelfox is wrong and hates the mentally handicapped.

Jay-Z is fire....but I think Kool G Rap in his prime is still the best ever.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Ice Cube from Straight Outta Compton thru Death Certificate too.

i hope this shoots right to the top when people google me now!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

But he has a hundred+ good songs, according to you, ILM. Does any other rapper?

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Who?

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, my curiosity is piqued now. pretty much every other MC that comes to mind as being possibly better either wasn't as prolific or died/fell off before making as many good tracks as Jay. the only one who has a significantly bigger/more revered discography is Pac, and he didn't have as consistent a quality control.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, and, yes, I am a Jay-Z detractor, but the one thing you cannot claim that the guy has is quality control.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

tupac's quality-control was OK. his estate's, on the other hand, ...
