that xiu xiu cover is a total classic.

duh

ddb, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Because, for a start, Derek Riggs didn't paint it. Secondly, because it's done via computer (and poorly).

What's wrong with Minor Threat's Out of Step?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It's clunky, poorly drawn and rilly heavy on the symbolism.

mzui, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's poorly drawn on purpose, to suggest abject otherness.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Just noticed someone posted Moon and Antarctica.
That is insane. One of the best looking sleeves in my collection.

4554, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, yea, I think that's also why I'm not keen.

someone mentioned upthread that XTC own this one, but I like most of 'em, maybe apart from White Music.

But now that I look at it in context, it doesn't seem to be that bad to me anymore. Go figure.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I like most of XTC's cover (White Music included). I suppose the cover of Mummer isn't so great, but then again...neither is the album. I can't think of any other band ones in there, really. The Big Express maybe?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Die-Cut Circular version of the Big Express is pretty handsome tho'.

I really like Mummer, it has a couple of my favourite songs on it..!

You heretic! I LOVE the cover of Monster Movie!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Soon Over Babaluna is one of the best covers ever. I used to stare at at it while I played it. Future Days is the only dud in there.

And has anyone ever cover-connected that Modest Mouse cover with the replacements Pleased to Meet Me?

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Gary Panter's Frank Zappa cover, like almost all Gary Panter art, totally kicks ass. Frank hated it, but shows you what he knows.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Future Days is the only dud in there.

???! That's one of the most instantly recognizable covers ever (in a good way).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like a generic cover for some bargain basement versions of some lite-classical tunes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw. I like the cover of the Spotlight Kid. The only thing it's lacking is a Sombrero.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the cover just doesn't feel right. it looks cheaply done, no matter how much that suit cost. the tan on Van Vliet's face, the golden glow. and my god, the suit...

tod (tod), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

and then there's the Velvet Underground 1969 live thing, which looks just horrible.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That gay bath-house disco Iron Maiden cover may well be the most interesting they've ever done (musically or otherwise); it totally reminds me of Silver Convention's *Madhouse*. The gay disco live Lou Reed cover is pretty cool too, in its own way (totally reminds me of some Theo Vaness album cover.) I kind of like the Voivod one up there too (though it's actually one of their *worst* albums), and the Yes one with the naked guy, and the blurry four-part Modest Mouse one.

I kind of like the Voivod one up there too (though it's actually one of their *worst* albums)
There's not many musical opinions I've gotten as much shit over as my preference of that album over every single other Voivod release.
Admittedly the vocals are goofy, but by gum is that some fine extra-terrestrial heavy metal.

Anyhoo:

Haven't heard the album, but I'm in no hurry to.
I guess it's hard to complain too much about the cover though, since it's so danged funny!

Btw. Don't at all agree with the Wedding Present Cover. If this was a football (soccer) forum rather than a music one, then George Best would come out as obviously classic in a C/D post.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000068GTK.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg was much better of course.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and I can't agree about The Spotlight Kid when Don allowed his music (or at least, something that vaguely approximated to his music) to be released in http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000007XTZ.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg and http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000024ZSW.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Stew, are you on crack? The cover art for Music For Pleasure is the most enjoyable thing about that (otherwise lamentable) album.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The most enjoyable thing about that (otherwise lamentable) album is Lol Coxhill's sax on "You Know"....

.... OK, the lyrics to "Problem Child" are also mildly amusing - although NOT in a good way.

As for the sleeve: it completely fails to reflect the music inside (well, except insofar as it's a badly planned, carelessly executed, sloppily produced, garish and incoherent mess of course!); particularly when compared with the sleeve of Damned Damned Damned (which reflected the music inside so phenomenally well). You can't even make out the the name of the sodding band when you first look at the cover (actually, on second thoughts, maybe that was intentional!); and even when you do, can you really imagine any self-respecting little punker wanting to wear a T-shirt with that appalling logo / script on it or to paint it on the back of their leather jacket?

The fact that they chose to use a great sleeve like http://www.officialdamned.com/media/images/discography/singles/scase.jpg on a limited edition freebie at around the same time, just makes the whole thing even more perplexing and inexplicable

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard/seen that Joni Mitchell record in person, but somebody posts it on every bad record covers thread and I think it's great!! It's fun. What's so bad about it?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Btw. Don't at all agree with the Wedding Present Cover. If this was a football (soccer) forum rather than a music one, then George Best would come out as obviously classic in a C/D post.

-- Geir Hongro"

Sure, it shows "chutzpah", but I'm not even sure what that means, or if it's good or bad. Honourable mention to the mighty AC/DC, whose every cover ('cept the neutral "Back in Black") can cause blindness.
