Antiseen C/D?

Rolling down memory lane a bit further, we have Antiseen. Born & bred in Charlotte circa '83/'84 and still going strong (apparently) in their South Carolina home. I have personal involvement with the band, having released 3 7"s of theirs in the late '80s as well as a solo 7" by guitarist Joe Young, so obv. I'm biased, mostly toward their early stuff. I caught them live a handful of times in '89-'91 and always thought they were never able to capture what a BEAST they were live, back when they had the Clayton/Young/O'Keefe/Throgmorton lineup. The resulting recordings were sometimes excellent (EP Royalty, Blood of Freaks, "Two Headed Dog", parts of Honor Among Thieves) but often too tinny to really showcase their growl. But anyway, I'll say Classic if only for their first few years. Also worth searching out are the Jeff Clayton & the Slimegoats 7" and the first Judas Bullethead 7" that they released on their own label in '88.

The band started switching members and drastically increasing their recorded output beginning in about 1993 or '94, and I lost touch with them and stopped paying much attention. But looking at antiseen.com, it sure seems as if they've got a loyal following.

I was a fan of those first two 7-inch EPs when they came out, and then the *Honor Among Thieves* LP (which was just reissued on CD a year or two ago) a little less so; I even interviewed Clayton for Creem's heavy metal mag at the time. Black Oak Arkansas and David Allen Coe as punk rock made sense, somehow. But everything I've heard since was pretty unlistenable, ugly for its own sake, whatever...

There was a brace of Antiseen reissues in the local store about a year ago but I had no idea which ones were the best. "Honour Among Thieves" wins out by default because I had it years ago through BonaFide. I missed out on the EPs.

Who put those out? I want to say TKO, but I'm not 100% sure.

Apparently there's an official book coming out too.

I saw them a coupla times back in the day, and you're right, the recordings were always a pale substitute for the live thing.

So, did Clayton cut open his forehead every single gig, a la pro wrestling, or just at the ones I caught?

Also, I haven't heard it in years, but the chorus to "My God Can Beat Up Your God" wafts through my head a lot these days, especially in re Bush/Cheney/et al.

"Your god can suck on my rod"...heh.

Lee, Jeff used to smash open his head pretty much every gig, from what I can tell. He often used the ol' washboard to do it, too.
