I sense a similarity.

Oh it's not a cman one.

Umm, Blown a wish for me...

Oh it's not a cman one.

I was surprised too.

"Blown a Wish" as you might guess but "Your Favorite Thing" is one of the better Sugar songs -- haven't listened to it in a while, though, so an exact similarity doesn't suggest itself.

That's funny. I've always noticed the similarities there, too.

And every time I here the line "Show me all your favorite things", it reminds me of Sugar, since I heard FU:EL before I heard Loveless. Sadly, it almost ruins the song for me.

Same thing goes for "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service. Anyone else hear Jimmy Eat World?

"such great heights" sounds just like "the center of the world" by bright eyes. and like jimmy eat world, I guess, I hadn't thought of that. It is a painfully unoriginal and bad song.

It's a painfully AWESOME song.

"Your Favorite Thing" though yeah Shields should have gotten royalties for it.

Putting on my circa 1996 Bob Mould fanboy hat...

Well, actually, that crazy noise part throughout the song is from an effects pedal given to Mould from Kevin Shields which had no markings and made lots of crazy noise. So, the song was written as a tribute - just like A Good Idea was a tribute to the Pixies - to a band who was influenced by Husker Du et al and then vice versa.

I'm sure there's some circa 1996 mailing list with a similiar post from me somewhere out there in the ether.

I thought "Gift" was actually said tribute song (given the title and all).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

so an exact similarity doesn't suggest itself.
the similarity is that the opening lines and vocal melody of "Your Favorite Thing" are lifted directly from "Blown A Wish."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

See, this is why I need to listen to it again. (Most of the time I would rather just hear Beaster -- quite a lot, at high volume.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually found this out backwards, hearing FU:EL first. I'm really surprised there's no songwriting credit for Shields.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah sorry it was Gift nevermind I haven't listened to that CD in years.
