Anyone been to Detroit Bar in OC?

How is it for live acts? Stereolab & Modest Mouse playing there in March. Claustrophobic? Sight lines ok? Skinhead bouncers? Etc.

It's in Costa Mesa. It's small. Get tickets early. Get there early. Saw Stereolab and Papa M play there over two years ago. Was great. Eat at Taco Mesa a few blocks east beforehand.

I'll add that I flew down to see that aforementioned show. (Also, to see old friends too, but the show was a big factor)

How's the sound? Can you see the stage if you're not smelling the breath of the singer? The legend of the skinhead bouncers lives on but maybe they've gone on to bigger and better things.

Do I need a passport to get into OC from LA?

Thea, Thursday, 29 January 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking as someone who will doubtless be going to this show (I too have seen Stereolab there with DB and others):

How's the sound?

Pretty solid, heard much worse.

Can you see the stage if you're not smelling the breath of the singer?

Oh, easily -- the stage is in a side room, though, so if you're not in the side room itself, you're not going to see much.

The legend of the skinhead bouncers lives on but maybe they've gone on to bigger and better things.

No worries -- there are no Evil Bouncers at the stage, people know how to behave.

Do I need a passport to get into OC from LA?

No, but you DO need to eat at Taco Mesa beforehand, as noted. Drop me a line.

Concur with Ned. The majority of the place does not have sightlines to the stage. The main areas to the front and side of the bar (with the couches) would be bad places to be, unless you just want to listen.

I've only been there on off nights with local bands but I wonder how it fills up with "bigger" bands? Do they fill it up so there's overflow into the main room and you're just SOL if you can't see?

kickitcricket, Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What, another OC person hanging around this board without telling me? IDENTIFY YOURSELF. Actually that's not needed, but we need to say hi properly sometime.

Yes, if you're not in the room itself when the band's onstage...you're not in the room. There are video monitors up so you can watch what's going on while you're sitting in the lounge area if you're so inclined.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank ye, Ned I will surely do that.

What else is down there? Any other venues that we should know about, up here in El Norte?

Thea, Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean I'll drop you a line, not watch the video monitor from the other room.

Thea, Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not too terribly much, really -- venues like the Galaxy, HOB at Disneyland and the Coach House are usually played by bands who also have a show in LA, then there's Chain Reaction in Anaheim but there hasn't been a band I've wanted to see there in a dog's age. Ever since Koo's packed up shop for Long Beach, most of my area shows have been the first three I mentioned plus the Detroit Bar, though there's doubtless more going on in north OC than I've been aware of.

I mean I'll drop you a line, not watch the video monitor from the other room.

Do both, for maximum entertainment!

Ned:

What's funny is that I just noticed you live in "The OC" just yesterday while perusing the user statistics section (which led me to your webpage). I'm also a fellow Bruin, by the way!

I live in glorious Huntington Beach, but most of the time I'm up in LA County where most of my friends live and work. I'm a software engineer for a chip company in Aliso Viejo by day.

Where in the OC are you? Irvine?

How about if you're in the room with the stage and I'm stuck in the other room watching Stereolab on the video monitor, could you please drop me a line and reel in.

Thea, Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, very good! A sign of sanity!

Hell, you're right around here. Live in Costa Mesa, work at UC Irvine.

How about if you're in the room with the stage and I'm stuck in the other room watching Stereolab on the video monitor, could you please drop me a line and reel in.

I will always help anyone affiliated with college radio, as you can guess from my own e-mail address.

*does some further checking* Melvins tickets are on sale now, Stereolab tickets due to go on sale on Friday. http://www.detroitbar.com etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

And this is a great press photo...but no Mary. I still can't believe she's gone. :-( The last time I ever saw her was at that 2001 Detroit Bar show, so the memories are going to be bittersweet indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Does my employer still count as college radio? Thank you Ned! *Phew*

thea, Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it's on a college campus so you count. ;-) But if you were elsewhere I WOULD MOCK THEE YOU NPR PERSONAGE HA HA.

Actually one of my best friends from UCLA/KLA days Eric J. Lawrence works there so I hold no bias or grudge. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Let us bow down to EJL, the Zen Champion of the Lost Bands of KCRW. He has no bigger fan than I.

Thea, Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! We'll get along splendidly. Why I remember the day he discovered Ween for us all back in 1990 or so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I lived in a deep hole in Canada back in 1990, so when I came here I had a lot of catching up to do. It continues. I kneel humbled before Eric J's throne of knowledge.

Thea, Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a good mang for that sort of thing (especially since he has no airs and is friendly, not overly intense and knowledgeable all at once). Bring him down with you if you can!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I will try try try.

Thea, Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been there for Stereolab, Spectrum, Broadcast, and The Breeders. It's your typical smallish size club - I like it.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)
