The wind cries Mary -Hendrix
Mary's prayer -Danny Wilson
Mary had a little lamb- Wings
Mary of the fourth form- Boomtown Rats
Mary - Supergrass
Mary Anne - Shadows
Mary's boy child - Boney M/Harry Belafonte

Some sort of quasi-religous link to the virgin mary? Or is there another more common name?

Agreed. And I have never once met a Mary. I think they exist ONLY in songs.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Katie

Re Mary dont forget 'Thunder Road' - 'Mary's dress waves/Like a vision she dances across the porch'

pete s, Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

how do you solve a problem like ......?
I just met a girl named .....
Take a letter, ......

That Blondie song
That Santana song

Variation on Mary.

Some names rhyme more easily than others, too.

kasey robertson, Thursday, 29 January 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There's an awful lot of Jane's as well. Sweet Jane, Lazy Line Painter Jane, Queen Jane Approximatly, Jane's Addiction . . .

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 29 January 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2004 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Not many "Dawn" songs tho.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 January 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, I was gonna say Mary too:

Lonesome Mary - Chilliwack
Cross-Eyed Mary - Jethro Tull
Mary Ann With The Shaky Hands - The Who
Along Comes Mary - Association (Right you are, Jens!)

But dig this: Without trying too hard, I can name 4 completely different songs called simiply "Gloria" - but can't think of any titles with "Gloria" and another word besides. Weird...

Heh? Poor, poor Jazzbo.
Mary's - and Mari's for that matter, in my neck of woods - are all around. And many a Mari I've met 's been wonderful. And "Mari mure" ('Mari's Worry'), a quiet song performed by ER's Children Vocal Studio, that I used to play on the radio lately, is a wonderful tune too. :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 29 January 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and the Monkees - "Mary Mary, where you goin' to?"

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 29 January 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Mony (like a pony)? Not in a lot of songs, but it's freqency per song surely merits a mention.

Huck Me Gently (Horace Mann), Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't say "Mary's Boy Child" was QUASI-religious :-P

Jennifer She Said - Lloyd Cole
Song for Whoever - Beautiful South has a Jennifer
erm...can't think of any more Jennifers :/

Favourite name used in song is Cherry, as in JAMC's "Cherry Came Too" (which doubles as a spare Beach Boys track if you crank it up to 45) - and Suicide's slight variation "Cheree"

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, there are a few Delilah's, certainly - Tom Jones's, Middle Of The Road's (with Samson putting in a brief guest appearance)... Must be more, though can't recall right now.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"erm...can't think of any more Jennifers :/ "

There's Donovan's "Jennifer Juniper". Plus a few "Jenny"s

judging from rap songs, the correct answer would be "bitch"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

'Faye' anyone?

I have sat and thought, trying to calm my girlfriend, but failed.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary gets double props if you add references to Mary Jane.

earlnash, Friday, 30 January 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Morphine had both a "Mary" and a "Mary Won't You Call My Name".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

There's also a great many Julie/Julia variations (Ben Folds Five "Julianne", The Beatles "Julia", etc).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It is one of my favorites by them.

earlnash, Friday, 30 January 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)
