Covers that were obviously last minute rush jobs

The cover for the new Walkmen album just has the anonymous look of an "oh shit, we need an album cover right now - just do ANYTHING" last minute rush job.

Post more examples please!

I'm not a big Tortoise fan (they're ok), but I've always considered that one of the greatest covers of all time!

That Walkmen cover would be 1000x cooler if "The Walkmen Bows + Arrows " was spray-painted on that wall and the guy's face/ shirt.

I refuse to believe that Creed cover would be approved by the company in a rush. There's no way the band did not FIGHT long and hard to get themselves chiselled into a goddamn tree. Damnit.

I saw the cover of the current Westlife album on a supermarket display last week, and thought that even by their standards it was distinctly shoddy - it looked like a five-minute knock-up job you might do on a photocopier to promote a pub gig.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002P49.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

They had to replace the original "flames" cover after the tragic plane crash, of course. So, sparing no expense, they used this: a greatly enlarged copy of a photo that was about 2" by 4" on the original's back cover. Dunno what's on the back of THIS one...

Myonga Von Bontee, Thursday, 29 January 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i think this one says in the liners something about how they just made the cover in the day before it was due or something like that

Surely they could've done something to fix the spelling error? I seem to recall there being a monetary issue behind why it wasn't done, though.

Ugh! Charlie, too right! I HATE that album cover, makes me feel ill!

mzui, Thursday, 29 January 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently it was the result of the band pissing Factory off so much that they sabotaged the cover on purpose as a typically self-harming act of revenge. Ahhh, Northside - shall we take a trip...down the DSS?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 29 January 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't it say in the liner notes to the Rhino CD version of that album that the mis-spelling was intentional?

It's easy to say that after the effect.

about the R.E.M. cover: just after it came out I read somewhere that finishing the cd + the artwork actually was a last minute rush job and that that was the reason they chose that title.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It was originally a wet, busty woman with a ripped t-shirt on. The final version, I'm told, was finger-drawn text on a wet garbage bag (how appropriate).

latetotheparty (latetotheparty), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the Le Tigre cover looks rushed at all. They obviously had a certain design aesthetic in mind and strove to attain it (which I'd say they did). That said, that cover makes me not only never want to listen to Le Tigre ever again so long as I do live, but it makes me want to find existing copies of Le Tigre discs and snap them into many pointy shards that they may never be played by anyone ever again. Smarmy fucks.

how bout nearly all the GBV album covers to thread? except maybe mag earwhig. as i'm totally jpeg-challenged, maybe someone could post anything from the scat years, bee 1000, or alien lanes.

not that there is anything wrong with 'em though as they all completely represent well to the consumer what their going to get: slapdash lo-fi geek-rock that doesn't in the least take itself too seriously (though can't say the same for a lot of the fans).

j.m. lockery (j.m. lockery), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know about that. gbv strikes me as the kind of band that spends more time on their covers than they do on their music. and while a lot of them are far from great, they do fit in perfectly with the aesthetic of the music. they're just kind of hit-and-miss. while the cover of bee thousand, for example, is nothing to write home about, the inside art is fantastic.

curious, does anyone else refold their CD booklets for just this reason? to create a new cover? i did with bee 1000 so the cool train with 'guided by voices' inscribed wreaks into the guys head.

am i wrong for loving the PiL Live In Tokyo sleeve?

No, I love it too. The album itself? Eh, not so much. Actually, that's not true. While it's widely regarded as being crap (Lydon sacks the classic line-up and recruits hacks from New Jersey....oh, and Shatkins) to limp through PiL classics. I once was stuck in a multi-hour car trip to the Berkshires with a friend and only two tapes....Live in Tokyo and Yes' Tales from the Toppographic Oceans. After hours of excruciating prog-wankery (and I like Yes), Live in Tokyo sounded like the most vital, fresh music in all creation.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)
