Twilight Singers - Islington

Just seen the post down below, but thought I'd stick this here as more people would read it.
I thought they were magnificent, its the 1st time I've seen them, never saw the Afghan Wigs.
Was a bit pissed, and I can never remember the titles of tunes anyway, but there was quite a bit of old wigs stuff that I recognized, and a few tunes that I didn't (though I've not listened much to the 1st Twilight Singers album because I think its a bit crap).
Some nice covers though, Hey Yah, a Kate Bush song (I think) and a very, very cheeky bit of Layla thrown in.
Very impressed, the band seemed to be loving it, and I think they played for nearly 2 hours, which I wasn't expecting.

BTW I was stood next to Jimmy Page for most of the evening and he seemed to be well into it

It was a stunning show. Greg Dulli's charisma overfloweth.

Aye, he is a rock god unlike any other - despite having evidently been at the pies a bit. Top moments: the Darkness medley; when he caught a cigarette that someone threw onstage in midair and casually took a puff from it; the fact that he was completely pissed by the end and tried to thank everyone in his entourage...

Whigs songs they played included Crazy, Going To Town, Sweet Son Of A Bitch and a bit of Debonair...

And he also bears a startling resemblence to Tony Hadley from a distance

Great, great show, loved the cover of 'Hey Ya!' and the little snatch of 'Roses'. In fact the part of the last encore that went 'Uptown Again' - 'Hey Ya!' - '66' - 'Crazy' made me giddy with delight (even Dulli's half-joking but still absurd claim that Andre 3000 was ripping off '66'). I had to leave just after that - how many more songs did they play?

(Another neat touch: 'Martin Eden' was dedicated to Dr David Kelly. Do you see?)

i don't think greg's currently eating particularly more pies than he was eating during the 1965 era... what's more, i think he wears it well.

the shows i saw werent nearly as good as the reviews mentioned but its cool that he still brings it on stage.

anyone hate how dulli writes the most boring cliche lyrics these days?

"take the car and DRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE"

"let's take a RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE"

"Party at the MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANSION"

Frankly, he could be reading the contents of a cereal packet and still make me all wobbly at the knees...

five months pass...
Revive! Twilight Singers are playing London King's Cross Scala on August 18. I get down on my knees and weepingly beg all Whigs fans to go - the Islington gig was my best gig of the year (beating Brian Wilson and the Pixies eve).

three weeks pass...
So, did anyone else go last night? It was strangely disappointing - a much shorter set than the Islington Academy gig, Dulli was pretty sober and it didn't really have the same party atmosphere of the Academy, though musically it was very tight. Perhaps proof that an amazing gig should be left in the memory, rather than trying to relive it - a theory that I hope isn't proved when I see the Pixies on Friday...

That's odly comforting: I couldn't afford to go this even though the Scala is virtually on my doorstep, so it's nice to know the one I did make it to was the better gig...

Mind you, they did do a fantastic cover of Björk's 'Hyperballad'...
