Joss Stone: A Thread

She hasn't got one yet, you know? Anyway, blah blah white blah blah young blah blah black voice blah blah Betty Harris ?uestlove yadda yadda White Stripes Arethra Franklin.

It's... I'm not sure yet. It's a very warm album, she's obvious profficient beyond stairs, but... is it just me or... does it sound like Mariah Carey in places?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it but it's a little too, er, tasteful, respectful or something. Sounds a tad too much like a Southern Soul version of the Norah Jones album.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i got it for my dad for christmas. he digs it. it's kind of a novelty. the whole "she's only 16!"-trot-out-the-little-kid-on-showtime-at-the-apollo-to-belt-a-whitney-tune thing. but it's pleasant enough. and the band of soul vets to back her up was certainly an inspired touch. could have been a lot worse. give somebody credit for not doing the obvious thing with her big-mama vocal talents. and she IS talented.

norah jones comparisons are apt as NPR was a big booster for both and they both appeal to the same sorta crowd.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The White Stripes cover makes me incandescent with rage. She's taken a fantastic song and made it beige and bland and boring. And I hate the way she's changed the lyrics to "boy" to make it clear that she's not, you know, some kind of lezzer or something. For one thing, it makes it all wrong because "boy" doesn't rhyme with "world", and for another, well,
"SARAH says it's fine, she don't consider it cheating"??? I mean, Bobby can be a girl's name too, so really, WHAT IS THE POINT? And I thought she's meant to be some kind of sixteen year old musical prodigy and write her own material, so why is her FIRST SINGLE a BAD COVER VERSION?

If she'd covered 'Bad Cover Version' I might have had some respect...

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i think my first post could really be boiled down to this:Nothing to hate, nothing to love. (same with Norah)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone got any thoughts on Amy Winehouse? My legendarily tin-eared boss is clamouring for us to put her on a cover cos she's playing one of those Barfly charity thingies round here.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

morley on newsnight review was if anything even worse. "postmodern lena zavaroni." "every syllable she emotes" - no you deaf old codger the whole point is that she doesn't DO melisma, that she is NOT mariah carey. people who use that line of accusation just haven't listened to the record.

i don't give a fuck about those con artists the white stripes; she has improved on the whiney original.

amy winehouse needs to get out more.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Chokin' Kind" does sound like "All I Want For Christmas Is You", though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but she is always out down the snooker hall! It's not HER fault she always gets stood up!

*remembers her rubbish songs*

OK perhaps they have a point

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

And I thought she's meant to be some kind of sixteen year old musical prodigy and write her own material

Joss Stone hasn't written a song in her life, as far as I know. The album is all covers, but before you dismiss it out of hand on that note alone, they're all (with the obvious exception of FILWAG) fairly obscure old 60s & 70s album tracks and suchlike.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Con artists?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom, stop touting for review ideas on ILM. (Cos I never do that...)

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Joss Stone album a lot. I haven't heard half the originals, which probably helps, but she handles those songs with a lot more than mere proficiency - she's got a real knack for phrasing, she does it in some very unexpected ways. If anything it's the backing which lets her down by not being adventurous enough for howshe's interpreting the songs. "Fell In Love With A Boy" is great - I haven't decided what I think of the gender reversal yet but it's sinuous and sexy and makes me completely forget the original (which I loved).

Amy Winehouse is great too, she sounds like she had a lot of fun making her album. Better at uptempo than the ballads, but lyrically she's sharp as fuck. Is she really playing the Barfly, Mencap? I say 'put her on the cover' as well!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's one of those charity things that all the Barfly venues - Back to The Bars I think it's called. Thing is we're a listings mag and it'll be long sold out by the time it comes out, so it just looks daft.

Super Furries, Supergrass and, wait for it, Gary Numan are the other three in our locale, should any of those interest you.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I'm most interested in Winehouse though Numan would be good too I s'pose. Our student rag's film editor went to school with Amy Winehouse... apparently she was quite quiet.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"postmodern lena zavaroni."

That's funny. She might not do the melisma thing all that much (at least compared to her contempories) but there is that BIG voice thing. She sounds like a less screechy Janis Joplin to me.

And I fucking love Amy Winehouse (my album of the year). Wish she'd get her arse over to the States.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing as we're mentioning Morley and Zavaroni - a figure who is only a name to me - we should also pay tribute to the cameraman who lurched across the studio, thrillingly fracturing the programme's visual coherence, as Morley uttered that career-capping pearl of careless unwisdom.

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Morley quote resonates in that Zavaroni was one of the few (only?) white artists to release an album on Stax. I'm not sure if he was aware of that when he said it, but either way it's a more accurate comparison than is being given credit for.

Her album has the right people, right songs, right production but it sounds wrong. As LondonLee said it's too respectful, she should take note of the way the White Stripes have messed around with blues rock and use that as a pointer for her work. If she's going to work in a soul idiom she's going to have do more than be a carbon copy of the Muscle Shoals sound, otherwise she'll be nothing more than the next Andrew Strong.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone explain to me why Joss Stone appears to be marketed, for lack of a better term, towards the "indie" scene? I find her music, like most here, merely inoffensive, but it seems like she is being sold as a kind of young indie chanteuse. I just don't get it.

SCE, Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Star were on Stax, surely?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the reasoning is that she needs marketing to that sector because the Radio 2 fanbase is one she'll pick up without trying.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post, obv)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Um isn't she being marketed to the 'indie scene' cos her single is a cover of one of the indie scene's favourite songs. Though (see outrage above) this might not actually WORK....

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate the choice of single - it's one of my favourite songs off the album (and arguably the song on which she sounds the least respectful of the original), but there's a danger of it turning her into a novelty (as if the press about "16-yr-old white girl is able to sing the blues" wasn't novelty-seeking enough).

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, when I heard the single my first reaction was "This could be a good album as long as it stays away from the gimmickry of this"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Star were on Ardent, a spin-off from Stax.

Isn't the Joss Stone alb a sort've 'preliminary' intro/taster rec before we get the first big studio alb (w/ some of her own songs on it)?

Katie Melua, anyone?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 29 January 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Who she?

I'm still digesting the idea that Lena Zavaroni recorded for Stax. That's like finding out Lieutenant Pigeon were on Motown or something.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Thursday, 29 January 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

No they were on ESP.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 29 January 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I first heard Joss Stone during Ken Bruce's Popbrain or whatever it's called on Radio 2. He didn't announce it or anything so I thought I was supposed to guess who it was, so I shouted out 'Mary J Blige!' but the song kept going for longer than it would for a quiz question. Anyway, it turned out to be Joss Stone.

We are told that she's from Devon but nothing more specific. Please God let it be Sidmouth.

On the plus side, it did make me listen to my Miami Sound compilation, which I hadn't taken much notice of before.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 29 January 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Katie Melua = another of Britain's answers to Norah J! Isn't her alb number one, or just abt to be number one, in the UK? She is as fuckin' useless as Amy Winehouse and Jamie Cullum and Michael Buble anyway (I've been enjoying Lea DeLaria's new rec tho' - she does a great Robert Wyatt cover, and her rec company seem happy to stump up for some expensively classy jazzbo sidemen - Brad Mehldau (on her previous alb), Christian McBride, etc.)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 29 January 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Amy Winehouse and Katie Melua. You wait ages for a new popstar from Croydon to come along, and you get two at once. And they're both bobbins.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 29 January 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The White Stripes cover makes me incandescent with rage. She's taken a fantastic song and made it beige and bland and boring.

Sounds anything but. Previously it was just a bunch of buzzing.

lee ward (lee ward), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Was gonna buy it when it came out, 'cuz o' the buzz going round. But yeah, the Mariah Carey comparisons are inevitable, and ultimately, a turnoff for me, at least.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

she really doesn't sound anything like mariah carey.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

she has one of those loveable not-posh accents. or it's loveable to me anyway. i have no idea where she is from. i love whenever i think there is even a remote possibility that i will hear an "oi" or a "cor blimey". yours truly, loveable chimney-sweep fancier.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah WTF COR BLIMEY - unless "She sounds like Mariah Carey" = "Uh oh it's a soul singer".

Just downloaded the White Stripes thing, not my cuppa really but better than I thought it would be.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Joss Stone's voice sounds like it might be on a par with that of Alicia Keys' (decent soul voice although the truly great soul voice tends to require a BIG woman, which neither of them are...tho Beyonce probably comes closer). the changing around of things (not just words) sounds too contrived Pop Idol style but kinda impressive for her age nonetheless.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

scott she's from Devon I think

Joss Stone = Later With Jools Holland stamping on a human face forever.

Venga, Friday, 30 January 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Hardly...
I was surprised that Morley was so... vehement. One could maybe understand this record passing some tastes by, but in no way at all does it deserve such a panning as he gave it. And I've been enjoying his recent BBC6 shows immensely... so I'm generally in tune with his tastes.

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

My feeling was that Morley had decided what he was going to think and say (not necessarily in that order) about her and her record before he'd actually heard it.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 30 January 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

....as he usually does.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 30 January 2004 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The usual critic code in early '80s NME was that if Morley said "greatest album ever made" that meant "worth a listen."

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 30 January 2004 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

PJM: she's from Uffculme, which people probably write as "Uffculme nr. Willand" to make life easier for Postie. Mind, when they're writing to someone in Willand they probably write "Willand nr. Cullompton".

It's always good to see a new Devonian pop sensation, though, and I think Joss Stone is currently at number 2 in the DevonPop charts, which line up like this:

5. Muse (Teignmouth)
4. Chris Martin (Exeter, or more properly Pinhoe)
3. Appliance (Exeter)
2. Joss Stone (Uffculme)
1. Duncan out of Blue.

Duncan out of Blue actually is from Sidmouth, bless him.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 30 January 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

She was from "the little village of Devon" according to one US paper. Nice

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 30 January 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

There's also a thriving Devon hip hop underground with luminaries such as Specifik & Project Cee, the Jedi Mics (both from Exeter) and the Cohorts, whose "Escape From Jannersville" EP I've been enjoying even though they are from Plymouth which is really Cornwall.

None of these people would thank me for mentioning them on a Joss Stone thread, I fear, and none of you will either so I'll stop now.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 30 January 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, their last album sold around 1.5 Million I think, plus their new single is a big hit on Alternative Radio and it's been getting a lot of VH1 play.

I think someone should start a thread about VH1.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

and yet she is flopping in her own country - is it because americans are blissfully unaware of her nonmusical antics?

She's not on the tabloid radar here. Not that I pay attention to such things. I have no idea of her nonmusical antics anyway.

blueski, Friday, 30 March 2007 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

ah, she's fuckin' awful. good-looking woman, that has nothing to do with any of it. just as many artists, like the equally awful Madeleine Peyroux, are Remedial Billie, she is U Rethra Franklin. I'd rather listen to Norah Jones, at least Norah can really play the piano, and Diana Krall, ditto. that Krall is in Thrall to the Great American Songbook, and Stone is "soul," is irrelevant. completely worthless, and I mean I like redheads which I guess she is.

Two men were being held last night over a suspected plot to rob and murder singer Joss Stone.

Cops found swords, rope and a body bag when they swooped on the pair at around 10am yesterday near the star's isolated country home.

The men, aged 33 and 30, also had detailed maps and aerial photos of her rural property in east Devon.

The suspects had travelled from the Manchester area 200 miles away.

The pair set off from their home in Manchester with a samurai sword, knives, bags and gloves crammed into their Fiat Punto, bound for Stone's address in Devon.

However, their plot immediately began to unravel. They were spoken to by police having been involved in a crash on the journey to the West Country.

Bradshaw and Liverpool also asked a postman for directions to Stone's home in Ashill using a picture of the pop star in an attempt to track her down.
