Does it actually help? Are there any disadvantages (eats up the battery?) ??
Thanks.

the issue with Sony portables (particularly of the sport type) is the stupid ruddy ribbon cable they insist on using to connect the controls to the electronic bits to make the thing do its job. the ribbon cable is an inherent design flaw, and one that i'm almost certain Sony has to know about, since they've been doing it for years! yet they have never changed that fundamental part of their design---so the ribbon cable is always the first thing to go, thus rendering whatever nice amount of lettuce you've plunked down for the thing useless after a tragically short amount of time.
normal wear, i could understand. but this? it's just ridiculous. just say no to Sony's portables. >P

i use rechargeable AAs for my CD player. rechargeables are of course more expensive than throwaways, but it's a whole lot less than $50 every couple of years to replace them if and when necessary.

That said, I don't know if I mistreat my Sony CD players (leaving them in a hot/cold car) or what, but I've killed several. The newest one seems to be inexplicably dead. Note that these are usually the $100 models, too.
