I'm trying to get into the Waylon/Willie/Merle type stuff, but I'm not sure where to get started.

freddy fender - before the next teardrop falls

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

just get Honky Tonk Heroes by Waylon and Shotgun WIllie by Willie...that's a good place to start....alot of people also like Red Headed Stranger by Willie....also Waylon's This TIme and WIllie's Phases and Stages...The Outlaws album is good as well.

Merle's prime stuff is probably more in the mid to late 60s so be cautious in his 70s output....there is definitely alot of good stuff there...Merle is prob. better served by Greatest Hits if you're starting out....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Honky Tonk Heroes is THE classic 70s outlaw record, even though I think none of the songs were written by Waylon (Billy Joe Shaver, or someone?). Dreaming my Dreams is the other brilliant Waylon album. I am not sure I really think any Merle Haggard record is GREAT. I would reccomend a comp.

Red Headed Stranger can be a little off-putting at first, especially if you are not into Willie, but it is no doubt a classic.

Man if you have a turntable hit your local $1 bin...you can find like every Country record released in the 70s cheap. Easy way to get an intro (working through George Jones this way myself.)

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Tanya Tucker (the Aliyah of C&W) -- Delta Dawn, Blood Red and Goin' Down, What's Your Mama's Name Child?, Would You Lay With Me a in A Field of Stone....

George Jones - The Grand Tour

earlnash, Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

look for Billy Sherrill's production credit - he worked on a ton of great 70s country stuff. And I'd totally 2nd that idea to comb the dollar bins. I've done the same and been introduced to some great stuff.

I'm also a big fan of Johnny Paycheck. "The Soul & the Edge: The Best of.." comp is great place to start. His "Real Mr. Heartache - The Little Darlin' Years" comp is great too, but that's all 50-60s era stuff.

Avi, Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of Emmylou Harris's 70s output is worth checking out, esp. the album Pieces of the Sky.

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Gram Parsons, but I am not sure I would place him in the Waylon/Willie/Merle genre. Seems to me like a totally different animal.

Happy to see Willie & Family Live is no longer a 2-star album.. Too bad the review does not at all match the rating.
