El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a demo tape a few years ago from a Tokyo band when I was begging for music for a label that never got started. They were called The Happy Bears. It was insanely fast pop-punk and the girl who sang must have sucked on helium balloons before stepping up to the mic. At the time, I hated it. Now I wish I still had the tape.

"the girl who sang must have sucked on helium balloons before stepping up to the mic".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

great, I'm gonna see if I can slsk these...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, there's a bunch of classics; i mostly know about the hardcorey ones (and I'm far from an expert) so I'll hold my tongue.

Anyhoo, I highly, highly recommend The Futures. They're doing that Breakfast-madness thing (from pure hardcore to Minutemen grooves to psych-outs)
It's wonderful!

I'll try to get a panda I know to post here, as he knows scarily much about that whole scene.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Guitar Wolf are Japanese, aren't they?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yes.

punk? at shinjuku loft 20th year anniversary concert, his guitar went out of tune after one song and stayed untuned straight through 2 encores.

janni (janni), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

There's always Snuffy Smile Records if you want about three thousand bands who all worship Leatherface. Recommended: I Excuse.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

TEENGENERATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jp, Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

POLYSICS

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Polysics would be great if all they'd ever recorded was a 7"

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Peelander Z!!

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Related, but older (and sadly never got going):

Gauze, Gism,... 80s Japanese hardcore.. c/d/s/d

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the garage punk scene there seems to have faded since the late nineties but Teengenerate were great... I haven't heard Firestarter or any of the post teengenerate projects from Fink. 5678's have been going for ages, i think "Teenage Mojo Workout" from 2002 was their best one yet. Gasoline were supposed to be good. The King Brothers put out a good noisy punk record on In The Red awhile back.

for older stuff, check out some of the great Group Sounds (GS) comps that have surfaced overseas in the past few years - "GS I Love You" and "GS I Love You Too" are both amazing.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 29 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaji. Very good band, somewhat in a Fugazi vein, but, er, better. Similarities with Melt Banana (mostly due to female singer), but Gaji play songs as opposed to guitar explosions (which I also like).

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 January 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Mad 3
Pot Shot
High Lows
Change Up

Mind you, I've never actually heard these bands, but I asked my friend who is sitting here.

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

THE MIGHTY...GUITAR WOLF (it can't be reiterated enough)
TEENGENERATE
THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT
KING BROTHERS

alternativa deluxe, Friday, 30 January 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Bleach (so as not to be confused with other bands named "Bleach",
search for the album "Three Girls from Okinawa") - light crust punk
with funky bass.
Super Junky Monkey - punk/funk with (sometimes) hip-hop vocals. Sort
of like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but at least 10 times harder/faster/
more technical/more interesting. Broke up in 1999 following singer's
death. They could best be described as sounding like the first differential
of pre- and post- Charlie Melt Banana.

minion, Friday, 30 January 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

for pop punk both Judy & Mary, and Go!Go!7188 are excellent.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 30 January 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're going as light at Go!Go!7188, "Seagull Screaming Kiss Her, Kiss Her"
are also great. But I don't consider either of them punk.
