One of the most (wonderfully) confounding and disparate record labels around, i dunno much but i think they grew out of a record shop and seemed to start off releasing leftfield electronics (Funkstorung) and Basic channel type stuff (process) then spiralled off into post-rock (set fire to flames), alternative electronic rock (the animal collective), so much uncategorisable stuff its hard to keep track of, especially with offshoots like the splinter series. I heard some tracks recently from a lovely morose orchestral pop record by Crescent and want to hear more but have no idea what to look out for. Help!

the comp of the first few splinter 12's is good. there's another coming out i think. the dorine muraille disc was momus fave of last year i believe (french folk fucked up with dsp)

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 29 January 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

also disparate is right: they dj'd here last year and the set included everything from alice coltrane to bitmeddled madonna.

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 29 January 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Their AMM/Merzbow split 12" is a lovely thing.

Funnily enough, I've just been listening to 'Beaches and Canyons', which Fat Cat picked up for UK distribution.

i liked the xinlisupreme cd. pretty fucked up. think merzbow remixing my bloody valentine.

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 29 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have that splinter comp. That compiled one side of each of those 12' but with the AMM/merzbow one it was neither: the original merzbow track could not be put down onto vinyl so he gave another one instead for the 12' but the original 15 min monster is what you get on the CD. Its the only track I can remember: a beautiful collision of rhythm and 'white' noise, wonderful build up and crushing climax.

Mum's Green Grass of Tunnel is gorgeous.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

They hda a very cool promo set up at one time.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 29 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Thom Yorke called one of their 12"s "One of the greatest songs I've ever heard" or something like that in Spin magazine waaaaay back in the day. So they must be a good label. Of course I can't bloody remember which one it was, so forget I ever brought it up.

i've loved most of the 7" singles they've put out over the last couple of years. the charlotteville and xinlisupreme ones were excellent, quite liked the programme and drowsy ones as well.

The Gescom track from the Gescom/Advanz split 12" is one of my personal all time favorite idm jams.

I like the Immense records (although they're not as good as the Immense vs Zan Lyons 10" on Spoilt Records).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 30 January 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Theres a good compliation that came out last year called Branches and Routes. Also Animal Collective is great, as is Mice Parade. Luckily I know someone who works for them and I get sent all the stuff! woo-hoo!

garret (garret), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

so garret u must have that crescent Elpee? do you like it?

jed_ (jed), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Lotsa <3 for reissuing the Animal Collective first 2 records.... plus the split with David Grubbs and Avery Tare. I think they licensed Black Dice's Beaches + Canyons from the DFA for UK release as well.

I'll 2nd the Xinlisupreme mentions above, pretty wild single, EP and CD from those kids.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

that giddy motors album is enjoyable.

sean marvin (williamtell), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't they just reissue avey tare and panda bear - spirit they've gone, spirit they've vanished recently?

sean marvin (williamtell), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sean, yeah that's what i meant instead of animal collective.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 January 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

they released Danse Manatee as well.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 30 January 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax wasnt too far off because in the fat cat reissue the name was changed to the Animal Collective for both since neither of the reissued albums were released under that name (the second being Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Geologist).

Catsup Plate>Fat Cat

Wasn't that a 46 minute 4 song cd single? Didn't know there was an alternate format.

listening to max richter album *24 postcards in full colour*. pretty cool!

these people came in today who had done work for fat cat and i ended up with a bunch of old stuff on vinyl and cd. going through it now. our brother the native (don't think i like them. too screechy and animal collective-y for me), foehn, crescent, storsveit nix noltes, animal collective (too screechy and our brother the native-y for me), mice parade, ensemble (album with lou barlow and cat power), hilmar orn hilmarsson & sigur ros, david grubbs, HIM, black dice, the dylan group.

i'll have to see if any of it is as good as this max richter album. cuz this album is quite lovely.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 July 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

digging the foehn album. it's one of those "soundtracks for an imaginary film" things. and it's called Hidden Cinema Soundtrack. which totally makes sense.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 July 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

really like the ensemble album too. from 2006. the song "all we leave behind" is a stunner. so pretty.

i never did find out about grain, except that the record i have is pretty excellent dubby techno made by spanish dudes?

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Sunday, 4 July 2010 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

sorry! the song i like on the ensemble album isn't all we leave behind it's the seventh song "loose". not that anyone cares, just wanted to correct that...

scott seward, Sunday, 4 July 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

max richter album the blue notebooks is so beautiful.

Feels like an underused thread ... perhaps everything gets talked about separately? (Maybe some bits on the "classical music you buy from Boomkat"?)

Anyway, the Maarja Nuut & Ruum album is great.

Have we talked about this elsewhere? Such a good album.

Random thought: what are the Fat Cat records that are techno-y but begin (end?) with highly random sketches of someone phoning into a radio station with their singing dog or similar?? I want to say Grain but maybe it isn't.

djh, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 14:54 (five years ago)

There’s a new Maarja Nuut & Ruum btw but I’ve yet to hear it.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 14:55 (five years ago)

Ah, found it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzfAOIZvzV0

Ah ha ha! i had forgotten all about that bit of Grain lunacy.

Not quite....

Been enjoying Maarja Nuut & Ruum's Muunduja over the last few days but realise I've never tracked down anything by her or them. Any recommendations?

Like, I'm sure I could just Google stuff but hey ...
