DUDE THE UNWOUND SINGLES LP RULESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think many "indie rock" bands have produced so much non-album goodness as this. Really, I can't think of anyone else with a good singles collection.

I've always liked singles much more than albums, especially punk singles.

The finest example.......

OTM.

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i love unwound, but that singles comp of theirs really really didn't rule my world. i thought it would be great, but i really didn't like it. and i like almost all their albums. but, yeah, singles comps are essential for lots of punk bands. for the obvious reason that lots of them never made albums. everybody needs to own a pagans or weirdos comp. yes, everyone.

I can listen to this comp over and over and over. MKUltra really deserved to be on an album. The live in Toulouse mp3s/bootleg also showcase a lot of Unwound stuff you can't see on the albums and also some Leaves Turn Inside You stuff in a more straightforward manner.

Also, Singles Going Steady is fucking great.

Hard to beat the Buzzcocks. But here's a decent singles comp:

A recent one I forgot about is Bad Brains "Banned in D.C." It is like getting a good mix tape from someone that has all of the records.

earlnash, Friday, 30 January 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Another good one...

The Dead Kennedys - Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death

Just the ones that appear if you search Amazon.co.uk using the words "punk" and "singles"

Definitely classic: 999, Newtown Neurotics, Angelic Upstarts, Discharge, Boys, Vibrators, Adverts,

Hmmmm: Dickies, Vice Squad, UK Subs, Slaughter & The Dogs, Action Pact, Lurkers, Outcasts, Chelsea, Anti Pasti,

Meh: GBH, Peter & The Test Tube Babies, Anti Nowhere League, Cockney Rejects, Sham 69, Mau Maus, Abrasive Wheels, Varukers

Dud: Special Duties, Blitz, Exploited

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 30 January 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wot no Eater?

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 30 January 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

There's "The Compleat Eater" but that didn't come up on my search and in any case isn't just singles IIRC.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 30 January 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Other classics:
"Skip Off School To See The Damned"; "Tales From The Damned" (incidentally Ned, I believe you'll find that those "sore-throat vocals" on "Burglar" weren't provided by either the Captain or Algy but were in fact Ratty!); and "MCA Singles A&B".
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Once Upon A Time; Twice Upon A Time
Blondie - Best Of
Crass - Best Before 1984

Also, depending on your definition of "punk":
The Cure - Staring At The Sea; Galore
The Fall - Early Years 1977-79; 458489 A-Sides
The Jam - Snap!
Pere Ubu - Terminal Tower
The Stranglers - The Collection 1977-82; Singles (The UA Years)
XTC - Waxworks; Fossil Fuel

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 30 January 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a question, would it be better to pick up the first two Strangler's albums or get a compilation as an introduction?

The Stranglers are one of the bands of that time I haven't really heard and lately have been curious about.

earlnash, Friday, 30 January 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stranglers are that rare breed that have more compilations than actual albums out. Best compilation: The Hit Men two discer.
