jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

mcsweeney's vol. 6!

which was really just a bad idea all around. mcsweeney's = shit, and tmbg being the mcsweeney's house band = shit.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Monday etc.

I can't imagine renting the tank was especially cheap.

Four plane tickets to Iceland (five, unless they used an Icelandic photographer). Shit adds up.

This had a quintuple gatefold Roger Dean designed sleeve plus a photo booklet, and the album sounded like it had been recorded down the phone.

What does that mean?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Meaning, before anyone could get a pirated copy of Photoshop and do the cover at home on his or her computer.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Factory Records to thread!

The woman on the left apparently became a born-again, evangelical Christian and sued when she spotted the cover in a record store. Tad had apparently found the original photo at a yard sale or something. No word on how the guy on the left felt about it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Incidentally, the album is 8-Way Santa by grunge also-rans, Tad. The album cover eventually looked like this....

Believe it or not, this was one of most expensive album covers ever done at the time, at least according to that Kiss & Sell biography. It was pieced together by snippets of a bunch of pictures from the photo shoot and took forever to put together, if I recall correctly.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

But boy was it worth it!

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I just read about that, Kent, in the Behind the Mask book. Apparently, Paul was very fussy with how he looked. Surprise.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The photographer for that cover apparently died recently:

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess this one cost a pretty penny, too.

"This can't have been cheap (original LP version with turning wheel, I mean)."

The genius of the cover of Led Zep II is that the band and its management had the acumen to get Atlantic to cover for all record packaging.

earlnash, Friday, 30 January 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That's "III"

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

This one's also a wheel type. And certainly expected to sell fewer copies.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I bitch on this thread about my old band's first CD, where the 8-page colour cartoon booklet cost about eight times more to print than the EP did to even record in the first place? And that's not even counting the days of work I spent slaving over a hot computer at the ad agency... sigh.

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

8 pages for an EP? C'mon.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I kid you not. They wouldn't let my Spiritualized obsession out in the music, so I had to get it out in the costly sleeve design. Eight pages for five songs.
