The Bird, The Bird, The Bird is NO LONGER THE FUCKING WORD!

Back in the late 60's/early 70's, a lucky photographer snapped this classic pic of an angry Johnny Cash.
http://www.bergsjo.nu/bilder/cash01.jpg
Back then, it was a shocking, unexpected and powerful image.
Nowadays, on the other hand, every dimwit metalhead/rapper/punker/polka diva flips "the bird" so often that is has absolutely NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER.
This fact of "the birds" utter and complete irrelevance has not reached the deep recesses of the mind of Eminem. I can't even remember a single pic of him where he's NOT making the one-finger handpuppet.
So anyhow...this thread ask the following questions:

1) What will rockers/rappers/punkers/polka stars have to now to get peoples attention now that The Finger has been rendered useless?
2) I say Nudity. Nudity never goes out of style.
3) Wouldn't it be fun to break Eminem's fingers? I say yes. What about y'all? Wouldn't you love to take a ball peen hammer to his bony digits?
4) Is there any popstar out there who WOULD be shocking if he used The Finger at somebody? I mean, can you imagine Moby flipping out and then flipping off the universe? For some reason I cannot mentally picture this.

Agree/Disagree/Expand/Rebut/Philosophize about the non-issueness of the dirty digit.

It's still the most popular finger

But its such an empty and tedius gesture in the 21st century. It now inspires yawns rather than gasps.
Bah.
Besides, the thumb is more useful. You can't use tools without the thumb.

Strangely, it would be shocking if Michael Jackson did it..

"Surprising", yes. "Shocking", no.

Weird stuff shows up when you do Google image searches on this topic.
Jesus, work is taking FOREVER today.

I think it could still be effectively deployed in the right circumstance.

Welllll, unfortunately for him, he doesn't use his finger.
Thats why he's in such deep trouble right now.
Or at least that's what his penpal, Gary Glitter, sez.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 31 January 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if it's all that shocking or anything, but that Cash photo is stone proof that Johnny Cash was, is, and always will be the biggest bad ass of all time.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The caption sez it all.

I think I disagree with Ben.

adam west (adamwest), Saturday, 31 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I beleive that the Cash photo is him flipping off a guard at a prison show.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed, it's the legendary San Quentin show released as an album -- the CD rerelease a couple of years back has Cash talking a bit about it.

Anybody wanna take a crack at questions 1-4?
I really am curious about how ILM feels about the above.

For some reason I want Kate Bush to flip the bird on her next album's cover.

That might be a re-appropriated euphemism, but I'm not telling.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

a Kate Bush with a bird is worth two in the...
No. No...it's not working.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

in the pic I thought I was posting, Timberlake was doing something funky with his thumbs. that guy's just trying to take all the glory.
