How various heavy metal and hard rock bands fared saleswise for the past 13 years

In the US, according to Soundscan, thanks to Metal Sludge. Obviously not complete and MS say that themselves -- I'd like to see the catalog numbers for, say, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as well, while the whole thing is skewed towards MS's stock in trade rather than including millions of nineties things that could be called metal in a C Eddy sense. Still, though, fun chart.

10. Black Crowes 7,421,978

is this sad or fun?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 31 January 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly fun.

yikes, metallica-nation.

EXIT LIGHT

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 January 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

wonder how much of that is post-black album?

Stuart (Stuart), Saturday, 31 January 2004 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No big surprises, although I'm predicting a 4th quarter rally for Enuff Z'Nuff.

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 31 January 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The black album itself was selling a ridiculous amount still for years and might still do -- it's something like the Dark Side of the Moon for the nineties, or at least was.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 January 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I didn't expect Megadeth to sell more than Pantera.
and it scares me that 80% of that list is creampuff-metal.
Who are all these people who buy Britny Fox albums?

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 31 January 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, keep in mind the reach of the totals -- it covers from 1991 to now, and therefore includes sales from the last year or two of LA-style glam metal's dominance. If you were to look at things year by year it would probably tell a different story (though personally I'm pleased and tickled at how well Def Leppard have done).

Tuff vs. Celtic Frost...

Where's Sebadoh?

Metallica reissued their catalog like two years ago, so they've sold 15 million plus just recently. It's boggling.

They really have sold about half of all heavy metal albums. Ten times Iron Maiden. Six times Kiss. They should fund their own space program.

And you should see the Pollstar receipts -- Metallica grossing $1-2 million a night while playing 200 shows a year.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

over 4 million units of Tesla shipped in the Soundscan era? Sweet merciful McGillicuty.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It kept people happy. Somewhere.

Then how come everywhere I look people keep talking about how much it sucks? Even die-hard Metallica fans hate it! I think it's quite lovely, meself.

I was in 9th grade in 1991.

every other 14 year old boy had a metallica T-shirt in my freshman class.

I was a weirdo, I had Cure and morrissey T-shirts.

Even die-hard Metallica fans hate it!

That's mostly who hates it -- it's when they turned into a rock band.

Who are Firehouse and why did they outsell fuckin' Motorhead?

Destined for the "painfully literal album covers" thread.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That is somethin' else -- she struck the match and used it to set fire to a large mansion, yet the head of the match is still red! Maybe she did it with her mind.

Is there anyway to find out these soundscan figures on the net withoout having to pay fiendish amounts of money.

I'd like to see a Britpop list for example.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm rather puzzled at this list - this is only for bands on the five major labels, right? Because a band like Dimmu Borgir sells 200,000+ per album, and Cannibal Corpse also went platinum with each of their early 90s albums.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 2 February 2004 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems those people don't count Korn or Limp Bizkit as metal. I would guess both would do quite well on the list.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 February 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure they're counting indie sales as well (given that a number of those bands lost their major label status sometime back but kept putting out records), but also keep in mind my point above that this is focused on Metal Sludge's stock in trade, which is by default much more glam metal (and nu-metal that will admit to it) than black metal.
