ipo.. nas - it was written

i really like those alex in nyc threads about the misfits albums and all that, one of his classic records, always some corny 80s hard rock thing but a good idea and he's enthusiastic.

i've been listening to it was written a couple times a day for about a week, since i was talking about it on the the explaining illmatic to sterling thread. i like the new nas, stillmatic nas, nastradamus nas. but it was written is sort of like the the early 90s nas classic. adding: that should have eclipsed illmatic. (i liked illmatic better for a long time!)

the intro strings, slavery, gonna be a hangin' tonight, and dropping into the second part-- '1996, (a-yo son, what the deal baby?) back up in this nigga (1996) the right way though, you know? it was all written.' and the message just kills it straight out, low key 90s trackmasters beat-- 'shit is grimy, real niggas buck in broad daylight with the broke mack that won't spray right-- don't give a fuck who they hit as long as the drama's lit.' flipping it illmatic style and the scratch of 'ya know my steelo' 'tttt-thhh-ere ain't a army that could' and sleep/cousin death.

all these trackmasters beats, the message, (i'm going to look through the liner notes-- it has the lyrics printed so you can learn it all very well) watch dem niggas, affirmative action (does it count if it's someone else other than barnes/jones for trackmasters?) whatever, the rest of them, street dreams (my favorite beat on it and it's just another low key 90s trackmasters beat but you totally have to hear it)

i can't get over how hot nas is lyrically on this and how much i like it. it's lyrical in the way that i guess rap nerds like, poetic in a bad way and lots of cleverness but no punchlines. so nice. (i gave you power is kind of lame, though.) i can't believe anyone who hasn't heard it was written thinks he comes nicer on illmatic. end of the cd, throwaway tracks are lyrically better than most of illmatic. he sounds so much more thoughtful and mature and like he's supposed to sound and way hotter ('omg taste in being subjective shocker').

next: affirmative action, which everyone knows is good-- before it, take it in blood is amazing and i like the way dre sounds at the start of nas is coming and they're making fake sucking noises (but it's kind of a lame track)-- affirmative action affirmative action affirmative action: the start of that makes me tingle, hairs on arms, all that, 'this is what- this is what they want, huh?' it almost sounds like at the start he doesn't know what they want but he becomes very sure all of a sudden. lust, envy, hate, jealousy (i always mess that up, i always forget it's jealousy) --- then he starts going and that IN FACT TOUCH MAS AND I REACT LIKE A ROTTWEILER fucking sets it off and i have to rewind it and hear it from the start at full volume and i get the lust, envy, hate, jealousy line right. there's so much i love about it: az sounds so young on his verse and he kills it and cormega kills it and YUKONS AND IN YA BLACK LEXUS - MEGA THE PRETTYBOY WITH MAFIA CONNECTIONS-- and nas's verse is kind of lacklustre and foxy kind of sucks, too. i like the way it starts . . . in the black camaro . . . but her verse doesn't stick to my head-- but there's a point in her verse when the beat kind of switches up and the harpsichord, i think that's what it is, does new things and it sounds like the beat's caught up to her or something.

black girl lost is okay, i like the start. suspect isn't great. shootouts is hot and the beat sort of sounds like affirmative action and it's awesome and he spits two of those nas-y stories in verse 1, 2: cop fucks with a hood girl and there's some kind of controversy and nas and his crew murder the cop and the girl, guy loses a bunch of money at a block party for a friend of nas and the guns come out and nas hasn't got his piece and flees the scene and several people are shot. live nigga rap, whatever.

ending with: if i ruled the world, which you know is good, right?

peace to my man nasir jones, bravehearts, az, foxy, cormega, all my real thugs in the qb, and alex in nyc.

still on the streets with my peeps so deep
we threw a block party for my man going up creek
to do his two-to-four, niggas show love from all around the board
peace lord, sony handicam on record
pop a bottle 'cause when you come home we still got it sewn
we can watch that shit play back and just zone
film all the bitches on the benches with ill extensions
we block the streets off, only crew cars can enter
music was loud and it was crowded
bbq wings and we fed the fiends
"gamble in the back," killa shouted
and frank tried to stop the bank loss, about what a rolex cost
guzzled his drink and staggered off
he's a big wheel, used to slang krill, now he own the hill
couldn't take losing his cash, and i could feel
somethin in the air-- yeah, frank returned with pierre
a gun slinger who niggas hadn't seen in years
i usually be holding, especially this type of weekend
and everyone except for me had started reaching
they had gats in each others faces, with kids
and grandmothers around, frank's only concern was his paper
my man killa let off, half of them fake niggas jet off
police blitz quick waiting for that to set off
running the static, it got me mad cause they a bunch of faggots
starting shit in my hood, i can't have it
yo high get the forty cal stainless, jake is still out
let's make it real and still make them niggas famous
dip behind trees in fatigues and squeeze, dodge, and weave
hearing jake retaliating and wiz was up the alley waiting
we breeze, jump in the ride, heard pierre died
internal bleedin inside and ain't been back since '95

i always thought the cover picture sort of made him look like he was taking the picture himself, because you can sort of see his arms coming up. i'm sure he's just leaning forward. he looks serious and his eyebrows are perfectly formed.

I can't believe there's anyone alive who digs Nastradamus...

It Was Written is great...but honestly it really doesn't live up to Illmatic. Lyrically, production-wise, conceptually...at all.

I think "If I Ruled the World" is ridiculously cheesy.

djdee2005, Sunday, 1 February 2004 12:02 (twenty years ago) link

I agree with djdee, but I like "If I ruled the World" even if its a little corny. But then I even like "Oochie Wally" and "You Owe Me" so I might be a Nas apologist.

well that settles my wondering which nas album to get next...
i've never heard anything by him that i like quite as much as illmatic other than nas is like, but i'd like to hear some more of his stuff...
i'll pick up it was written and report back
i like threads like this too, especially when theyre about hiphop

i like this thread. this morning i started to feel this record in a big way. take it in blood and i gave you power partcularly. it's taken me less time to get into this than illmatic, but i'm unsure which i prefer.

"street dreams" is for serious, "nas is coming" is great, i actually kinda dig "if i ruled the world," and "affirmative action" is alright but feels like a missed opportunity. the rest of this is snooze to me. maybe i just haven't given it enough of a chance.

I think it's just Deej who hates "If I Ruled the World", he's just vocal about it to the point where it seems like multiple people. "The Message" is A++, too.

dk's analysis was real on point but considering he dismisses 1/3rd of the tracks (and hes right) i have trouble getting all contrarian about this record being the REAL ILLMATIC or whatever. but yeah a good half of this shit is amazing, and 'street dreams' is the joint ive been playing on rewind a lot lately. sometimes you just hear the beat in your head and have to hear it again and again.

Boppin to Mona Lisa brown reefer, ten G's, gun and my Visa
CD crankin, doin ninety on the Franklin-D-Roosevelt
No seat belt, drinkin and thinkin

Stayed around the hood, smoothest cat, gettin the dough
Them old timers, advise you to them problems that's ahead
Drama with the Feds, not listenin just bobbin your head
Your Roley shinin, thinkin to yourself nobody's takin mine
At the same time, your hoe is gettin snatched from behind
Put in the van, where's the hundred grand, script in her hand
From all the ice, wouldn't you know -
- you knew these niggaz all your life
What made them mark you victim, you fucked up somehwere down the line
now they had to target your Wisdom
She took em to your place, straight to your safe
You doubted it could happen sick of yappin
Dump in your ride, headed to your side
Puffin ganja get to your crib, can't find her
Just a reminder shit and have your stash house where you crash out
