Anyone see the cover for Neil's solo album? He looks like he's at the insanity point of heroin use, very much like that footage I saw of John Frusciante babbling nonsense and acting truly insane (not "cool" insane, but homeless person insane). http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000059M17.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpgProb ably was supposed to turn people onto buying it out of curiosity if nothing else, but it turned me right off.

Who is he?

Sean, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, ok, Royal Trux guy, say no more.

Sean, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think it's obnoxious that he goes by all three of his names now... people seem to do this when they are either full of themselves or trying to appear "cards on the table" honest. Now, there's a new category: honestly fucked up and proud of it.

Nude SPock, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

this records sounds less layered than most of late rt's records: but I really like its bluesy feel . there's a prevalent sad mood that makes me think that jennifer was the aggressive side of the band . will they ever play togheter again?

francesco, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Neil's live show was one of the worst I've ever seen. He had two (2) drummers and neither could hold a beat. Which may have explained his very bad mood.

I think Jennifer's little "ow!"s and yelps get him goin, like Max Roach rolling a loud snare fill in the middle of some other dude's solo.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Classic! Sounds like Skip Spence w/ a drum machine, and is right up there w/ the v. best self-indulgent solo albs evah. Every song ends with a wigged out wanking guitar solo! And rather this cover than the one for 'Sweet Sixteen'.

i like Andrew L's description!

never heard royal trux. like pussy galore

Go for the "Drag City Supersession" album instead - Neil, Bill Callahan and Edith Frost with support from Jim O'Rourke, Tara Key, the Murphy brothers etc. Bill goes rockabilly, Neil gets to pretend he's in Black Sabbath, Edith gets to pretend she's Lou Reed, and the originals (a couple from each artist) are excellent.

Andrew Norman, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Try "Thank You", Gareth. It's the best album, even though it's the most conventional. (No doubt Omar will be along in a minute to contradict me ;))

"You're gonna Looooooooossssssse, an' ahm not tawkin to yoooooo...."

Or whatever.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ta-da! Dr.C is correct in that I will contradict him :) 'Cats & Dogs' is the best album. in. rock. ever. 'Thank You' is about their 5th best. Okay it goes: 1. Cats & Dogs 2. Royal Trux (aka Skull & Bones) 3. Twin Infinitives 4. Accelerator 5. Thank You. All 5 must have, blabla, hyperbole, blabla.

On that solo-album. Don't feel any need to check it out. This thing loses it charm without Lady Yeah. But I'll say that Neil looks pretty healthy on the cover. And I see my share of junkies on regular basis.

Omar, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Omar rulez!

Also definitely worth noting are the EPs from 98 and 00, 3 Song and Radio Video, which are just as interesting and fun and filled with ideas as any of the albums!

joel, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, I picked up that Drag City Supersession alb yesterday and am really diggging it, in a kind of piss-taking alt supergroup supermuso way. Tara Key is the real star of the sesh, imho, but they're all on good form - the version of 'Charley's Girl' pisses all over the Lou Reed original. Short, and no duds. Cool.

Andrew L, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Sincerely Yours, Confused" is a pretty durn good li'l EP too. i alway put it on at 33, it sounds GRATE and then neil's voice comes in like satanic molasses - d'oh!

So has anyone heard "The Howling Hex" album? I've been curious what this one is like as "She Drove a Rusted Sled" is one of the best song titles I have seen in a long time

I haven't yet checked out any of NMH solo albums, as I am still getting thorugh the Royal Trux albums.

I got "Pound for Pound" and "Veterans of Disorder" a couple of months back and only started listening to the Trux a little over a year ago.
I would never give RT the time of day for pretty much ten years, as I saw them open up for Sonic Youth and lay out the really big suck live.

Someone was off loading copies of "Thank You" for .50 cents plus shipping off of Amazon used and I gave them a try and am glad I did. I was suprised, they were a pretty good rock and roll band at least in the studio.

I haven't checked out anything before "Cats & Dogs", as that shit would probably be a bit much, considering some of the slay tracks from that period on the Singles collection.

If you like it slightly more "rock", slightly more straightforward, you still ought to investigate the second self-titled record, which immediately preceded Cats & Dogs. Fucking great; yes still quite stoned, but rocking, esp. on "Move" and "Sun on the Run". Also has "Junkie Nurse", key song in the self-mythologization but more importantly just a wonderful acoustic song by Neil.

(also, I'm with you in that I still haven't heard Hagerty's solo stuff; still planning to pick it all up eventually, just haven't been able to keep up. roger adultery wrote some comments the other day on the Seeds thread.)

Hagerty & the Hex is played in Indianapolis on 6/1. If I still lived there, I would have checked it out.

earlnash, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 03:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dudes, I just got the Howling Hex, and I'm sooo happy with it. I was a longtime Royal Trux fan, and found the previous two NMH albums to be so-so, a few really good songs, but a lot of what felt to me like filler.
But this one is really great. Lively, a song about the Martian Manhunter (the potential one, the one that could be the coolest superhero ever, not the weak Prof. X would-be DC has lately cast him as).
"It's nice to know the things you lost were real."
God. I almost took the day off work so I could listen to it some more.

There is a small interview on the indianapolismusic.net site with Neil Hagerty that states that Jennifer is going to continue as Royal Trux on her own. FYI.

earlnash, Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't doubt that it's there, but I can't find it on account of that site is a pain in the ass to navigate, and what the hell, I'll take your word for it.

I finally got the Howling Hex! (the regular album, not the limited edition thingy)

So amazing. His playing is really at its most fluid and effortless. Let's praise Neil some more because it really can't be done too often.

I saw Roger on ILX now so I hope he posts to this thread.
