okay, im having a superbowl party, not because i like football, but because i want to be ironic and pretentious. what are some songs concering football, sports, etc that i could play...other than the superbowl shuffle and everything on jock jams; ive already considered all of that.

If you're going to the trouble of throwing a party purely to be ironic and pretentious, you shouldn't need ILM's help in picking out music -- your music collection should be rife with records selected on those very criteria.

OK, then -- "Billy Don't Be A Hero" by Paper Lace; "Feed 'Em To The Lions" by Pavement, "Football" by Jah Wobble.

"Paradise By The Dashboard Light" by Meat Loaf -- hey! That's baseball! "Ironic", isn't it? (no it's not -- look up that word in the dictionary when you get a chance).

"Backfield in Motion" by Mel and Tim
Steely Dan "Deacon Blues" (calls Alabama the Crimson Tide)
"I Only Wanna Be With You" by Hootie and the Blowfish (where the
Dolphins make Darius Rucker cry)

(Those are all football; baseball has HUNDREDS of songs.)

All Music Guide calls "All Kinds of Time" by Fountains of Wayne "perhaps the best (and first) musical interpretation of a slow-motion football replay ever recorded," which may or may not be true.

I don't think all these soccer songs should count, though.

chuck, Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago) link

chuck, are you doing the superbowl shuffle today?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:39 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe. What time is it on? Right now I'm at work, but I'm leaving soon. I kinda wanted to see the commercials and half time show, I guess.

Oh yeah, "All My Rowdy Friends Are Comin' Over Tonight to Watch Monday Night Football," or whatever it's called, by Hank Williams Jr.

chuck, Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:40 (twenty years ago) link

it starts at 7 i think.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:41 (twenty years ago) link

i'm only in it for the commercials since my beloved fucking loser-ass eagles died an ignoble death.

"Ast Game of the Season," the classic early-'70s tearjerker about the high school football player who never got to play, with the blind father who always showed up.

Then one day the father dies, the kid goes to the game, gets in and is a hero, and of course mentions that his father finally got to see him play.

Isn't it a little late to be compiling a song list now?

--My one goal, and I really hope to accomplish it, is to not see a single frame of the Super Bowl this year.

--Real conversation I had at a gas station:
Attendant: So you watching the Super Bowl?
Me: (Trying to avoid awkwardness) Uhh... yeah.
Attendant: Who are you rooting for?
Me: Uhhh... uhmmm... I don't know, I mean, I just uhh, like the game.

--There is nothing in the world more depressing than people discussiong their favorite commercials.

the lions did a cover because that year i think they won 5 games, there was reason to party.

I think ironic superbowl watching is a dud. I prefer not watching it instead.

"Lions (Linden)" by Pavement is about football.
