OK, it's almost March - what is your favorite release of 2004 so far?

As noted on a previous thread, mine is easily Devendra Banhart's "Rejoicing in the Hands"

Obviously you don't have to adhere to 'official' release dates - if you've heard it, you can declare it.

Anyone besides Mark P heard the new Streets? Anyone heard the new Morrissey yet?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

As noted on a previous thread, mine is easily Devendra Banhart's "Rejoicing in the Hands"

I think I'd actually agree with this! However I have yet to hear any 2004 album more than once this year, which is when I start realizing what I really like or not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite one track that I think is terrible and another that I think doesn't belong on the CD, mine is Marcel Khalife's Caress. I haven't heard much though.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably a tie between Emma Bunton's Free Me and Courtney Love's America's Sweetheart.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

album: The College Dropout - Kanye West
single: Yeah - LCD Soundsystem

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, it'd probably be Xiu Xiu's Fabulous Muscles.

abegrand, Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Stereolab probably. But I haven't heard much.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

America's Sweetheart

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

America's Sweetheart?!? I heard it a few days ago... and I honestly didn't think music could be this bad, this generic, this grating, this useless.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

savor that ignorance and never turn on US rock radio.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Or 4Music.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I dig a few songs on America's Sweetheart but I'm not thrilled to hear more songs ABOUT being an LA corporate rock cokehead.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

America's Sweetheart a really compelling... psychological document, almost. Almost everything it reveals about Courtney seems to have been revealed unintentionally. I mean, I see how people can say it's a mess, but it's a glorious mess.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

America's Sweetheart IS, of course.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think... as I said in my review over at Stylus, its four or five good songs, but one great album. As with "Celebrity Skin", Courtney seems to excel nowadays at making albums that need to be listened to in a continual spell, rather than just taking each track on its own.

(However, if she does release "But Julian, I'm A Little Bit Older Than You" as a single, we have a new best single of all time)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

College Dropout thus far. Madvillain will prolly be the big challenger coming up though. I refuse to dl it in advance.

djdee2005, Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Through The Wire" has a Vanilla Sky reference and Courtney Love thanks Kirstie Alley and the Church of Scientology. I hope L. Ron Hubbard ain't the running theme of 2004.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Thus far it would be Thou's "I Like Girls In Russia" but I haven't heard much from '04. Boyskout's "Back To Bed" is my single of the year thus far, if it's in fact a single.

dlp9001, Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Highlights so far:

Tanakh - "Dieu Deuil"
The opening track is the least affecting on the album, an unfortunate opener, but "Exegesis," "Instrumental," "The Lord is in This Place... How Dreadful is This Place" & "Lady Eucharist" are all wonderful. They're a Montreal band (on alien8) that's relocated to Italy. I'd sort of describe them as a middle-eastern influenced Dirty Three fronted by a more cynical and world-weary Damien Rice type with a huge chip on his shoulder regarding Christianity (it's amusing, when I was first thinking of how to describe them, Dirty Three came immediately to mind, especially on the instrumental tracks, and I thought I could say it's like Dirty Three with a more conventional drummer, then I looked at the credits and discovered it actually was Dirty Three's Jim White playing the drums).

Department of Eagles - "The Whitey on the Moon UK LP"
They used to call themselves Whitey on the Moon UK, to explain the album title. Somewhere between Clue to Kalo and The Postal Service, this is laptop-beat-laden indie pop with a fantastic sense of humor.

Savath & Savalas - "Apropa't"
folky, spanish (& Catalan) nighttime music. marvelous.

cLOUDDEAD - "Ten"
Depending on my mood and the particular track, this can sound like the coolest thing I've ever heard, or the most annoying fucking shit I've ever heard. Just about what you'd expect, I'm sure. the first 2 tracks are stellar.

p:ano - "The Den"
p:ano call themselves "chamber pop." Really mellow indie music with random instruments popping in and out like saw, organ, dulcimer, French horn, woodblocks, treated piano, and wind-up music box.

Petracovich - "Blue Cotton Skin"
Not quite trip-hop, but with a definite Portishead influence, this is a beautiful album with great songs.

Dani Siciliano - "Likes..."
this reminds me quite a bit of Juana Molina's "Segundo" from last year, but it's frankly not as good. it's still quite pleasant, though, and worth a listen, if only for the surprising cover of Nirvana's "Come as You Are."

crap:
Jason Collett - "Motor Motel Love Songs"
not a trace of Broken Social Scene can be heard on this album. not a bad thing in itself, but Collett can't make up his mind as to whether he wants to be Jay Farrar, Ryan Adams, or a member of Wilco. and it's all ultimately boring.

Firewater - "Songs We Should Have Written"
but you didn't. should be titled "Songs We Never Should Have Tried to Play"

Lisa Gerrard/Patrick Cassidy - "Immortal Memory"
the worst imaginable combination of Gerrard's world music predilections and her soundtrack work. this is new age dreck for 4AD fans whose taste grew old along with them.

Courtney Love - "America's Sweetheart"
I repeat: I honestly didn't think music could be this bad, this generic, this grating, this useless.

John Vanderslice - "Cellar Door"
his singing never bugged me before, but god, does it ever on this album. and the songs are just shite. unfortunate.

90 Day Men - "Panda Park"
i was looking forward to this since hearing the lead single, "Too Late or Too Dead" last fall. i'll keep listening to the single and it's 2 intriguing, if lackluster, b-sides. the rest of Panda Park is at best dull ("Sequel"), at worst horrifically bad ("Silver and Snow").

Nellie McKay - "Get Away from Me"
i can't stand this. it annoys every cell in my body. and then we got an interview disc and i could hear what an idiot she is on top of it all. utter crap.

Minus 5 - "In Rock"
we all have Peter Buck and Jeff Tweedy to thank for the continued existence of this absolutely pointless endeavor. it sure must be nice to have friends in high places.

Thavius Beck - "Decomposition"
not everything Mush releases can be great. this is annoying.

Voodoo Child - "Baby Monkey"
retire Moby. please, for the children's sake, hang it up.

Franz Ferdinand, The Hiss, Liars, Walkmen
more of the same, and it all sucks.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Firewater - "Songs We Should Have Written"

I sense Alex in NYC's anger taking shape on the horizon, like thunderclouds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And that Courtney Love record... it is produced to an unlistenable degree. It could make a dog's ears hurt. Horrible, horrible music whose target audience are angsty tonedeaf teens who want to be punk.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

In anticipation of next weekend, a tie between Franz Ferdinand self-titled and TV on the Radio Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes.

anode (anode), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

so far The College Dropout, though I'm conflicted about it, and am still forming what I think are postive opinions on the Mountain Goats, Kylie Minogue, and Cee-Lo. Also really like the new album by Against Me!, though I think it's technically late '03.

Haven't started keeping track of singles yet.

(oh, and if you wanna consider Dizzee 2004 because of the U.S. release date, it's an easy #1)

chris herrington (chris herrington), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot to mention the The Mountain Goats record, "We Shall All Be Healed."

Disappointed.

Only his second studio album, after years and years of home and live recordings, and it seems John Darnielle has run out of steam. Which is startling, since it seemed he had enough steam to last a few lifetimes. There are some gems on the last half of the album, but the first 7 tracks or so sound like rewrites of the less thrilling tracks from 2002's "Tallahassee." None of which means this is bad music. Pitchfork's Will Bowers is dead on when he says "We Shall All Be Healed is like an ugly, hollow sports victory for a team anticipated to blow away the opposition."

Will Bowers. I dig that guy.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Only his second studio album, after years and years of home and live recordings

Er? I mean, these days I really find the distinction between 'home' and 'studio' recordings awfully strange.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm... album is probably The Scissor Sisters, single's probably Blink-182. Very much looking forward to the Blonde Redhead album though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, so I downloaded the Iron & Wine album and just finished my first listen, and I'm astonished. I was really worried about how polished it would be, since it's his first studio record, but my god, it's gorgeous, moving, and better than the album I would've wanted. There's no "Upward over the Mountain," but "Cinder and Smoke" comes close, and as a whole, this one's probably better than "The Creek Drank the Cradle." I'm always nervous when i like an album so much right off the bat, since it's usually the ones I'm indifferent towards that later sneak up on me and become my favorites...

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

In no particular order (I could add comments but I'd just be repeating myself):

Dame Dash Presents The Warriors 4
Dangermouse Presents The Grey Album
I Am Robot And Proud, Grace Days*
I Remember Syria
The Dead C, The Damned*
The Homosexuals, Astral Glamour**
Twista, Kamikaze
The Walkmen, Bows & Arrows
Kanye West, The College Dropout
Brian Wilson, smilelive22004.mp3

* Late 2003 releases.
** I don't actually have it yet of course, but there's a two-CD Homosexuals set floating around on SlSk, and I think it's grand.

I Hated, Hated, Hated These Albums:

Xiu Xiu, Fabulous Muscles
Trans Am, Liberation

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Xiu Xiu is shockingly awful.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I just wish the lead singer would make himself useful and go into gay porn or something.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

nah. it definitely has its moments - some of it is great.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's got a moment, it's when there isn't any singing.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got College Dropout and I like it more than I thought I would. (why did I buy it if I didn't think I was going to like it?) The new Aaron Booth is really good. I just got the s/t to Triplets of Belleville and I've got it on right now. I think this is music I listen to alone and don't let on that I'm a fiend for it, like my Hawaiian folk obsession.
Also, Andre Ethier (of the Deadly Snakes) has a new solo album that's really good. Denise James's new album It's Not Enough To Love is seriously good. And Raising the Fawn's full-length is pretty all right too.

Huck, Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard that much released this year...most of what I have heard I haven't felt strongly about...but I really like the new Ghost album, Hypnotic Underworld.

stolenbus (stolenbus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Is TI- Rubber Band Man considered this year? If so, it's my choice for single of the year so far.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Particle, "Launchpad," is absolutely kicking my ass.
But "America's Sweetheart" is a fine album, too, despite the backlash from everybody. Name another woman that rocks that hard in 2004.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

surely that's more of an indictment of rock than praise for ms. love

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Name another woman that rocks that hard in 2004.
what in the hey ya? If anything I'd like to note that where Brody Dalle once sounded like Courtney Love, Courtney Love's best new stuff sounds like Brody.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Courtney Love is Miss Havisham, Brody Dalle is that annoying girl that ends up falling for Pip anyway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Decapitated's The Negation is really strong. If it was 10 minutes longer, it'd be one of the greatest death metal albums ever. As it is, I gotta recommend their last one, Nihility, as the ideal introduction to them. But even a substandard Decapitated album is better than most bands' best effort.

4. The Robot Ate Me On Vacation Swim Slowly

Tell me what you like about this. The songs I heard were kind of overtly sloppy and tongue-in-cheek. Not so listenable, even though the reviews had me excited...

gazuga (gazuga), Saturday, 28 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard that much from this year yet either, but so far I like the new ones from Ghost, Air, and Dave Douglas.

The new Kate Bush album.

haha reading back this thread it's AMAZING how much the basic listening makeup of ilx has changed in the last three years (this is both a good AND bad thing).

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 27 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you mean Strongo?

I am of two minds

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Album: Tung Songs (even though I still haven't heard it).
Single: Dirt Off Your Shoulder (no chrome on the wheels, I'm a grown-up for real!).

J-Kwon is the fucking worst.

DJ BEAST OF LEGEND, Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell us what you mean, strongo. I want to be spoon-fed.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean there is less of a "consensus" than there would have been year-end 2001, i think. at the same time there is a NEW consensus of a certain stripe (i think). there's also just more people, a shitload of whom i'm not even sure i know who they are.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

shitload of whom i'm not even sure i know who they are.

Nu-nu-nu-nu-nu-nu-nu-ilm

I was wondering if you meant that things were more or less pop than before.

Begs2Differ, I will ask you here, since you are more likely to see it here: have you heard the new Los Amigos Invisibles? Apparently it has some (slightly unconventional) salsa songs on it (without giving up the other type of stuff they were doing before). I haven't bought their past CDs, but I might by this one.

Actually, has anyone heard the new Los Amigos Invisibles?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the new concensus? or are you following up your indie makes your teeth hurt comment from before?

I'll still go with Sung Tongs. However, my new concensus is that I'm more excited by a few tracks than a few albums.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant Sung Tongs.

DJ BEAST OF LEGEND, Friday, 28 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i do wonder if threads like this do bring out more lurkers, for whatever reason. or maybe ilm has just fractured so much into everyone staying on their own particular threads that all these "new" names have been around for months posting to 20th century comp or french rap threads or something that i've not seen because i can barely keep up with the stuff that interests me a lot these days.

i guess the new concensus is no concensus at all.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

until this year's "hey ya!" comes along and i feel like the last man among the mutants again.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This year's "Hey Ya!" = "Who Could Win a Rabbit?" (at least on sound alone)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know what that is. i'm already ahead of my own curve!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But you put Sung Tongs on top ten up there!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(or is this another joke I'm not getting, blah blah blah)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

haha oh

c'mon man this is the age of mp3s. i have no idea what anything's called anymore!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What, like you forgot the words to the song, too, or did you mentally replace them all with "rubber baby bugger bumpers" like I do?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

until this year's "hey ya!" comes along

I keep forgetting to start that "The Love Below: Most Underrated Album In The History Of ILX?" thread.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

by ILX, I mean.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony, we waits with breath abated.

your car cd player decided to sweat for two months?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 28 May 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist: no I ain't
heard new Amigos album,
Arepa just eh

I was gonna buy
it from Amazon but I
went Bersuit instead

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 28 May 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i have not heard a single album on this thread, by virtue of

(a) being totally broke
(b) not having a cd burner
(c) not being able to download anything
(d) being abroad with no friends who could copy me music

i want to cry.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 28 May 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

lots of the albums i've been getting into are late 03. my 04 list is pretty conventional

kanye, usher, burma, wiley, hold steady, flip, mountain goats, dresden dolls, royce, hold steady, ghostface, great hopes for ma$e and cam and the rest of the dipset. dunno why i haven't checked the new blink yet. also some strong singles waiting for albums -- nina sky, sasha.

looking forward also/just out haven't checked -- lloyd banks, mobb deep, r kelly, taleb, bone crusher, jadakiss

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 28 May 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm definitely putting "pretty toney" on my list, too. unfortunately it's the only (2004) album i've bought since march.

singles-wise: joe ft. g-unit, the dfa remix of n.e.r.d., the mobb deep track, r kelly (obviously), nina sky (obviously)

am i the ONLY person on ILM who's really really into the yung wun / dmx / david banner / flip track?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm only half way through listening to it for the first time but I have a feeling it could very well be Faust vs. Dalek - Derbe Respect, Alder.

Otherwise it's probably The Liars - They Were Wrong, So We Drowned.

Eagerly awaiting the new Mission Of Burma (I obviously don't "get" the title David.... can someone explain?!?)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 28 May 2004 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

no vahid my man
I repped for that yung wun track
on some singles thread

not the first song with
southern college "Drumline" horns
but perhaps the best

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 28 May 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Stewart - they were "ON" for _Signals, Calls, & Marches_ & _Vs._, then "off" for nearly 20 years, then turned back "ON" a couple of years ago.

And, slock1, that's what it told me it was doing. It just came back to me last week wearing a bunch of luggage stickers.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 28 May 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaaaaah. I was looking for something a little deeper!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 28 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It might be there! Dig!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Strongo, you like the Cee-Lo CD, huh? I'm a little surprised, since I like what I've heard from it, and it seems like it has too much throwback appeal to people who want to hear something like 70's soul for you to like it. (Maybe I never really understood your objections to Speakerboxxx, etc.) I don't love it, but if I were limited to listening to fairly mainstream pop stuff, this would be much more welcome than most of what is out there.

(I admit that I didn't even know his name before ILM, as far as I remember.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 30 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm honestly not trying to ruin it for anyone who likes it.

jess, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

still Bersuit for me,
lovely angry Argentines,
horny and righteous

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

still Ghostface here...surprised at all the love Snow Patrol is getting, not b/c it's not a solid record cuz it is, i just didn't expect too many people to appreciate it (though i still think it's being a little overrated).

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Grupo Niche: "Culbera" I'm still deciding about the whole album. There's nothing on it that I need to skip over, but I do think there's some filler.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Add "California" (the guajira or "guajira"). It would be a bitch to dance to, since there are some sudden unexpected changes in rhythm, but it's a pretty good song. I don't even mind the violin touches, since they are there more as a reference to the old school charanga sound than as a main part of the orchestration. I don't think I've heard them do anything of this sort before. I wish I understood the words, since there is probably some sort of punning on "Cali."

Gilberto Santa Rosa: "El Son de la Madrugada"

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

fifteen years pass...

16 years later, I still rep hard for the Casual Dots album. Seems like a few years after, this sweet-n-skronky indie started flourishing with the likes of Grass Widow and Trash Kit and the Upset the Rhythm label etc, but this never surfaced again.
