CD-R Question

Is there an online resource that rates the commercial available CD-Rs? Has anyone ever done any real investigation on the matter?

I'm not talking about the ones that cost $7 each, I mean, of all the ones at Best Buy and / or the local drug store chain, which ones do you avoid and which ones are built to last?

Is there anything to the claims of my sister's Radio Shack-workin' b/f that the colors on the bottom make all the difference? As in, the clearer the better, the bluer the worse?

absolutely the opposite.

i cannot find enough good things to say about the dark blue Verbatim CDRs

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I just get the cheap unmarked ones at cdrplanet.com... you get a gazillion for a decent price (around 25 cents per disc), and they're just as good as any other regular data CD-R.

The topside sure is ugly, though.

i get the ones with the printable topside

My main concern is longevity, of course...

Verbatims, eh?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I've still got Maxells I made in 1998 that get played on a regular basis with no problems. In the greater longevity scheme, though, five years and change isn't really a long enough test.

Whatever you do don't buy Memorex!!
They Suck And They Don't Work on Most CD Players

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

?

I've burnt about 200 memorex CDRs and they all work fine on at least four different machines (computer/dvd player/cd players)...

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Sunday, 29 February 2004 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've burned a lot of those Printable Memorex CD-Rs (the ones you can feed through certain Epson printers and print on) for all the CDR-Go's that I have sent out, and (at least so far) no one has gotten back to me about not being able to read them.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 29 February 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I Bought 100 of them (two 50 packs buy one get one free)
And Evertmime I Tried to Use Them The CD would Skip All The Way Through.
And It Wasn't The MP3's Cause I Burnt The Same Things on Fujifilm CD-R's And They Worked Perfectly

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Sunday, 29 February 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a question- how do you guys store the CDRs you buy in those big, budget packs-o-50 or fifty or whatever? Do you just buy packs of jewel cases separately? And if so how much do those cost in large quantites?

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 29 February 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a spindle big enough for 100 that I keep using over and over. Most of the cds I burn go into storage booklets -- with the exception of mixes made for other people, which go into jewel cases I never see again.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 February 2004 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Your best bet is any of the Taiyo Yaiden manufactured discs. Now, that doesn't mean much immediately, and in reality, you cannot really tell from the package. Basically, buy discs made in Japan. You won't have any problems with those, although they can be a bit hard to find. I got my last batch at Fry's with Fuji discs. If you're really sadistic, go to CD Freaks Media Forum and prepare for too much information w.r.t. CDR and DVDR media pros and cons, where to buy, etc.

Shawn Ledbetter (sledbetter), Sunday, 29 February 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I buy the thin, single-style jewel cases, 12 cents a piece in bulk. (100), but they can go down to 9 cents if you're crazy (5000+). Plug for Rima for mail order media and supplies. No business connection, just a satisfied customer.

Shawn Ledbetter (sledbetter), Sunday, 29 February 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The discs I've copied during the past few years numbers in the hundreds, so all of that was turning into a major eyesore. I had been keeping them on a separate shelf -- apart from the real stuff -- and they were eating up lots of space in those thin jewel cases. Now I'm in the process of converting those discs to MP3 and putting 8-10 albums on each data CDR. Those CDRs are being stored in white paper sleeves for the sake of space. I'll probably keep those tucked away somewhere. I've read varying reports that predict a lifespan of 10-75 years for the CDRs I've been using...

Memorex IS crap...Maxells don't seem to be as good as they were a couple o' years back

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 29 February 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to buy slim CD cases, but I amassed so many CD-Rs - and they took up so much space on my shelves - that now I just store them in binders.

Speaking of CD-Rs, I just buy the cheap-o Imation brand. I've never had a disc not play, or a disc go bad. Maybe they'll all turn to shit in ten years, but as long as they're not severely scratched or left in the sun, they seem to work just fine for me.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the TDKs with the relatively logo free top side. No coasters, ever, so far.

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i've been happy with TDKs in the past as well.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

fifteen years pass...

Any recommendations for somewhere online to buy/print 25 or so CD-R labels?

I used to just do them myself but don't have a printer.

I’ve used stickermule for stickers and labels. Not sure if they specifically do cd labels by they can cut any shape you like.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 14 December 2019 20:37 (six years ago)

bizarro gazzara, do you have a bot that posts "great revive" after every revive or something?

shout-out to all disc burners still supporting these little beauties, still come in handy in the Corolla

maffew12, Sunday, 15 December 2019 19:14 (six years ago)

I had a Memorex plastic stamper and labels c.2003 that I used a lot. I found that the labels rendered the discs unplayable after a while (which was unfortunate, as I didn't back up most of the stuff I put on them). Maybe there have been better ones? I was curious about printable CD-Rs but never had a capable printer (haven't owned a printer in years).

Lightscribe was pretty funny

maffew12, Sunday, 15 December 2019 20:39 (six years ago)
