Led Zep's "Moby Dick".....

....could this possibly be any duller? Seriously, I mean, even if you're a drummer! What a masturbatory excercise in needlessness. The riff is wasted on this pointless pile of percussion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

By way of explanation, I'm just going through my CD's, ripping select tracks to iTunes/iPod. I just can't fathom who would ever want to consciously listen to this track.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

HOW BORED ARE YOU TODAY ALEX?? I MEAN SERIOUSLY!

omg, Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite. The wife's nappin'. But, the question's still a valid one (or at least no less valid that writing sexual haikus on ILE).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"Trapled Underfoot"!

Whatever, I'm listening to "Lust for Life"!

But yeah. "Trapled Underfoot"

And because of your request, I won't put one word from that song, no matter how much I want to.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja. If you're going to contribute to a thread, try to at least address the question it poses.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently 45 minute versions of Moby Dick exist on bootlegs. Think about THAT.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh.

I'm not much for that song.

There! Happy!

Now go and listen to "Trapled Underfoot" for me. I don't have my cd.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry for interrupting.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What is this "Trapled Underfoot" ?

omg, Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

god, dont encourage her

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja (aja), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kashmir" is deep.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Man.

You know, I actually do sit in the front of the class.

I'm the freakin' teacher's pet with all FOUR of my teachers this year!

Oh my. At least no one gets on my case.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. I don't like the drum solo in that song. Pointless really. Even my dad got pissed off by it.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I never liked that song ("Moby Dick") anyway, but I'm not a huge Led Zep fan (mostly because Robert Plant's singing annoys me--I like their guitar sound and the drumming).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, isn't the singer from Led Zepplin Jimmy Page?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Asiakitty! I can hear you from back there!
You're still talking crap!

omg, Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My name is Aja.

teachers never say 'crap' infront of their students.

Go to the principal's office and explain yourself while I listen to "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

*throws tennis ball at aja*

omg, Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

*picks up uncle's tennis racket. hits ball. goes flying out the window and lands on a 2nd grader's head*

"Go to the pricipal's office Aja!"

But I'm listening to the Pixies!! The Pixies!! Nooooo. Let me go!!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You do know, Aja, that your beloved Dave Grohl is a huge John Bonham zealot...going so far as to have Bonzo tatoos, right?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But of course. How could I not.

Led Zepplin, his favorite band.

Physical Graphitie his fave album

I liked "Moby Dick" when I went through my extremely short lived Zeppelin phase around 1991.
Haven't heard it in years, though.
I think I'd rather hear 45 minutes of Alex's neighbours' TV than the 45 minutes of Moby Dick that udu wudu alludes to.

I fucking love "Moby Dick".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure, but I think there is a little bit of Jeff Beck's influence on Page's playing that comes through here. For that alone, it' worth checking out...

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, more Zep knockers. You younsters just can't get your head around a drum kit that's not plugged in. Personally, I thought 'Toad' was way duller than Bonzo in full flight. Joy Division....LOL.

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

An electronic drum solo is a horrible horrible thought. I like Moby Dick ok but then it's not like I remember shit about it.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is extolling the merits of electronic drums? I just find "Moby Dick" to be a yawning festival...even by drum solo standards.

And I'm no youngster.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I personally think the studio "Moby Dick" is quite interesting as drum solos go. Which is to say, still pretty boring but not terribly long. And of course John 'Bonzo' Bonham was the king thunder-god (& still is!)

As for those epic hour-long '70s endurance tests, no doubt they sounded fantastic on quaaludes & Boone's Farm, or whatever peculiar combination the kids were doing back then.

Myonga Von Bontee, Monday, 1 March 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yawn away Al...still can't stand Zep knockers though and this site's full of em.

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Man I ain't believing that shit about Bonham's one hour drum solo man. I mean one hour of drums, you couldn't handle that shit on strong acid man.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dazed and Confused", right?

Myonga Von Bontee, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. Long live Linklater. Lord knows I've handled his shit on strong acid for more than an hour. As for true 70's bombast, I'll take Fripp any day. "The Talking Drum" anyone?

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And come to think of it, threadwise, doesn't Andrew Cyrille have at least one solo album?

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: moby dick the song vs moby dick the book

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

vs moby, who's a bit of a dick

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yawn away Al...still can't stand Zep knockers though and this site's full of em.

REB

For a start, my name isn't Al. Secondly, I'm not "knocking Zep," I'm knocking this dumb song! Don't get your bulge-enhancing, lace-up low riders in a twist. Lastly, you really don't need to type "REB" at the end of each of your posts, as it's already going to appear.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i could play a better drum solo with my dick

duane, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough Alex. There's no twist in my jocks though, champ. I am aware that I don't have to type REB at the end, it's sort of a trademark o mine. I mean, there's no law against it is there? The Zep knockers remark was a meant as a general observation rather than a tirade directed at your good self.

REB

one month passes...
Jim Wentworth - What part of Beck / Page's playing are you referring to?

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff Beck's 1st solo album, (Truth) 1968, featured Jimmy Page and Jon Bonham. I think Beck was the more established player of the two at that point in time. His speed rifs, whammy, and feedback were cutting edge. Page would become a similar player of sorts.

Zep did their share of "borrowing" in their early years, and that all worked very well for me. But I can't help thinking each time I hear Moby Dick that it could just as well have been a jeff Beck recording, guitar-wise.

Maybe it's all in the way I listen to it.

They both diverged into different things a little later, but still I find similarities between them.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

On what tracks on Truth do Page and Bonham appear? Didn't think they were credited in the notes.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Beck's Bolero, possibly others. John Paul Jones plays on this album too, if I'm not mistaken.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, I'll check it out.

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
youre all fags

cornelius, Monday, 9 August 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What about "Bonzo's Montreux"? Or better yet, the "Moby Dick/Bonzo's Montreux" mash-up on the box set?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

That mash-up was good, better than either song by itself.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the song part, but yeah the solo is stupid.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 9 August 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Bonzo's solo is mindblowing, man. Takes you to another place. I heard he used cricket bats for drumsticks.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 9 August 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Paraphrasing the sadly missed Josh Kortbein (and applying his words to an altogether different band), Led Zeppelin are too smart for their fans. (At least as far as the studio version goes. I kinda skip the live versions too.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

how so, sundar? I thought the studio "Moby Dick" solo was not that interesting. In fact, I don't really get into Bonham drum solos much at all - imo, not his best realm.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
you guys are complete idiots. how many of you are actually drummers and have actually listened and tried to play it? and even if you aren't a drummer, if you can't recognize the musical genius of bonzo you shouldn't evenbe talking about him. i agree with the mark dude. the solo is awesome. bonzo was using his hands for most of the solo. i don't know about anyone else, but i say bonham is king! and duane: i defy you to coming close to playin that with your dick.
