What? No "Made You Look"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago) link

no! there are even ten more songs i would choose before it. don't let that stop you from putting it on your list, though.

William Wiggins, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:55 (twenty years ago) link

X - Illmatic. I've never liked another Nas song since.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:05 (twenty years ago) link

That's completely insanity.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago) link

there's an irony to decrying insanity on a Nas thread.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago) link

was he diagnosed with some mental illness i wasnt aware of?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago) link

not diagnosed, but I've detected symptoms in numerous songs and videos.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:10 (twenty years ago) link

but I'll use the word "eccentric" rather than "fucking insane" if you'd prefer

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:11 (twenty years ago) link

NY State of Mind
Live at the BBQ (Main Source)
Halftime
I Gave You Power
The World Is Yours
Made You Look
Nas is Like
Fast Life (Kool G Rap)
It Ain't Hard To Tell
Verbal Intercourse (Raekwon)

(three of these are guest appearances, but they are also some of my favorite verses ever in rap so I figured what the heck)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:12 (twenty years ago) link

Well it's plain nuts to say that the last good Nas song was 1994. Maybe none of the albums have been as good, but if you don't think he's recorded any SONGS worth listening to then you are either insane or you just plain don't care.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:13 (twenty years ago) link

just missed the cut: Drunk by Myself, Got Ur Self A..., Life's A Bitch, If I Ruled the World

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:15 (twenty years ago) link

while I agree that he's done good stuff since, didn't Jay-Z make the same claim Badlee's making?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:15 (twenty years ago) link

Jay-Z was talking about albums though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:15 (twenty years ago) link

xpost

Jay said two of them shits were "doo", and two were "eh" I think. so I think two at least are mediocre in Jay's book (so they'd have to have some good songs on them), but still a one hot album every ten year average....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago) link

And anyways Stillmatic and The Lost Tapes and God's Son have all came out since Jay-Z made fun of Nas for his "one hot album every ten years" thing.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:18 (twenty years ago) link

1) NY State of Mind
2) The Message
3) It Ain't Hard To Tell
4) 2nd Childhood
5) Halftime
6) The World Is Yours
7) Shootouts
8) One Time 4 Your Mind
9) I Gave You Power
10) Nas Is Like

He's a legendary rapper but I'm inclined to agree that he says some of the stupidest shit I've ever heard in interviews and has been inclined to choose some of weakest beats in history (around I Am and Nastradamus)

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:18 (twenty years ago) link

yeah any nas pox that doesnt include "nas is like" at least is faulty (sorry w.w.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:19 (twenty years ago) link

i wanted to like God's Son a lot more than I did, only really like about 4-5 songs of it....Lost Tapes is great though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:19 (twenty years ago) link

I'm shocked no one's mentioned "Phone Tap" actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:21 (twenty years ago) link

wasn't he saying "two of them shits were due"? like, if you put out stuff for ten years you're going to eventually get it right a couple times.

William Wiggins, Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:23 (twenty years ago) link

yeah any nas pox that doesnt include "nas is like" at least is faulty (sorry w.w.)

Although I get a perverse enjoyment out of WW's Nas POX because it doesn't include anything from Illmatic!! (f--- the canon for real)

wasn't he saying "two of them shits were due"?

Hm... that never occured to me! It's a more complex reading of the lyric....I always just thought he meant poop.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago) link

my favorites that haven't been mentioned: "One Mic" and "One Love".

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, what happened to "one love"? That's like POXing Jigga without "regrets".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago) link

"Nas Is Like" is easily the worst thing Nas has ever recorded.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:53 (twenty years ago) link

Hey Dom, you ever hear Nastradamus? Also, elaborate.

I would POX Jigga without "Regrets", for sure. "One Love" has never resonated with me like it has with, well, everyone else.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:58 (twenty years ago) link

Illmatic

+ Made U Look, 2nd Childhood, Nas Is Like, The Message, NY State of Mind pt. 2

"Nas Is Like" is easily the worst thing Nas has ever recorded

hahaha what the fuck!?

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:08 (twenty years ago) link

I'm not insane and I do care - Nasty Nas was one of the best rappers of all-time. Still is actually. Unfortunately these guys who called themselves Nastradamus (haha) and God's Son (HAHAHA) kidnapped him and locked him in a basement and we haven't heard from him in ten years. Nasty Nas had this soft, wise tone to his voice. I'm thinking of "One Love" and "It Ain't Hard To Tell" right now. He's never sounded like that again. These other guys are just trying to take Nas' identity and make it "harder". Its time for people to stop blaming beats for Nas' decline. He's ruined his fair share of good beats over the years too. Damn, at one time, I thought Nas was the greatest to ever pick up a mic. So I'm not hatin' just to be hatin'.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:43 (twenty years ago) link

i'm pretty sure he was british

dylannn, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 23:47 (ten years ago) link

if someone was going to compare jay-z/nas albums ten years ago, jay had a string of consistent classics, one after another, but ten years later, after blueprint became a trilogy, a black album and a kanye album, american gangster... it looks a lot different.

dylannn, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 23:59 (ten years ago) link

yeah honestly i would prob rate every post-2001 Nas album over every post-2001 Jay album

some dude, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 00:20 (ten years ago) link

I definitely would. but I probably like Stillmatic and God's Son (and even the s/t) more than most of this board, so read into that what you will!

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 00:21 (ten years ago) link

tbh i haven't heard the Damian Marley thing, i wasn't even counting that. does that have some joints?

some dude, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 02:02 (ten years ago) link

nothing to sniff out really but 'nah mean' is cool
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNbWSExg47Y
'as we enter' kinda in that same zone as 'otis' where the beat is undercooked and thin but the song is fine anyway cos they seem like they are having fun bouncing off each other

forgot all about "nah mean," that song is legit

sadly the rest of the album had, like, k'naan guest spots

first and only time i got a chance to see nas was at rock the bells in '09 just before distant relatives and right when the first single was out and he came out that night with damian marley to do "strong will continue." dope album but i'm not sure it'd be your thing, al.

new nas album comments.
i like a nas album to be a sprawling mess, rococo mediocrity studded with sudden genius, mix of stoned paranoia and nostalgia, sentimentality, room for even bad ideas to be worked out. 7 tracks all kanye beats is like all advice given in reviews of nas albums since 1996: too long can't pick beats please no weird sex talk or pretending to be a gun. praying for a real album with 16 tracks no i.d., salaam remi + a dozen lesser producers, go out with that.
