I have about $15 credit at Amoeba, so they have pretty much everything. What should I buy? I need a fix. I don't even know what's coming out today!

20th Century Masters: George Jones (The Millenium Collection)

Self-titled album by Brute Force, reissued on CD by SepiaTone. It's a soul-jazz group led by Richard and Ted Daniel (keyboards and trumpet, respectively). You need it because the guitarist is Sonny Sharrock, and he plays on six cuts, not three like the back cover says.

I was hoping you would have more than $15 - I would have suggested this:
Buy Spacemen 3's guitar amp

i was in amoeba the other day staring at that Brute Force cd. i kept saying to myself, "if i still was into jazz the way i used to be, i'm sure i'd be peeing my pants right now." but never bought it. from the look of it, it seems like it would sound like those Eddie Gale albums that were just put out? is it really good?

Well, it's got vocals. The first song is called "Do It Right Now" and has lyrics to that effect ("C'mon everybody, do it right now"), which may put you off. Me, I mostly bought it for Sonny. The rest of it kinda sounds like the Chambers Brothers, or maybe—did you ever see the movie Point Blank, with Lee Marvin? There's a scene in that where he's beating the shit out of a couple of dudes in the back room of a nightclub, and the director keeps cutting back and forth between Marvin's fistfighting and this utterly berserk soul singer on the club's stage. This band kinda sounds like that guy's band.

Nah, the Brute Force record is very mediocre. Unexciting soul, no songs, unmemorable. Certainly not a Sharrock showcase or anything.

It's definitely not a run-right-out thing. But there's one 15-minute track, "Ye-Le-Wa," that might be worth your money, if you're hardcore enough.

have you guys heard the Eddie Gale records? i posted about them when they were first reissued, but no one responded (standard fare for my posts). they've got vocals, freak outs, folky moments. they're just plain great, but i haven't heard anyone talking about them

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard 'em. I've considered picking them up, but I've got to get some other things first (still haven't gotten that Philip Cohran Ensemble disc from the other year).

Gear! Today's popular alb. that some ilxers have already bought, and others are going to, is apparently the new re-release of Lee Perry & The Upsetters's Blackboard Jungle Dub ;)

The suspense is over, and I went there with the intention of perhaps buying the first Angels of Light CD, but after 30 minutes I finally said "that's it, you can't hold me back any longer! I'm buying Eddie Gale's Ghetto Music! It's really excellent, thanks for the recommendation. Only $9.99 sealed! one of Amoeba's blue line specials.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard the Gale records in their entirety, but I've heard the cut "The Rain" from Ghetto Music, thanks to jack cole who put it on a mix cd. Agreed that it sounds quite good, all those massed voices; I'm sure I'll pick up the albums eventually. Sounds like you got a great deal, Gear.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah well you couldn't have bought the new Blackboard Jungle Dub reissue at Amoeba anyway (cuz they don't have it.) :( I bought a bunch of Nonesuch Explorer comps (curiousity) and another Wu-Tang B-teamers comp (cuz one can't have enough) for cheap instead.

eddie gale is ace! will smith would have a huge comeback hit if he sampled the acapella from 'song of will'...now i think about it maybe i should keep quiet about that!

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jazzanova have used the "Song Of Will" acapella with some typical German electro-bossa on the new Blue Note remixed comp.
