Newman's somebody I never really connected to; I've tried, starting with Sail Away as a teenager. I thought of him tonight, though, when the headline "Short people at higher risk of heart problems: study" caught my eye on the Yahoo news summary. Guess what seven words flashed across my mind?

"short people at higher risk, how ironic!"?

I'm far from the world's biggest Randy Newman fan, but I do have an understanding of his importance, so this CNN headline made me wince a little: "Pixar legend joins Taylor Swift on stage." (To clarify, not the Taylor Swift part.)

His film music is not for me, but I also realize that 99% of his income comes from it, and it's not like his best, earliest LP's sold well - they did so badly that the only reason he made more was due to the patronage and lifelong friendship (going back to when they were kids) of Warner exec Lenny Waronker. IIRC Waronker had to talk him into making more than a few LP's because by that point Newman thought any hopes of a career were futile.

He was earning good money on cover versions, especially "Mama Told Me Not to Come" by Three Dog Night.

..which doesn't mean he might not have said "why am I bothering to make my own records" at various points in his career, though I think on some level he likes being on the sidelines.

(xp) Definitely, "I Think It's Going to Rain Today", to name but one, was covered by dozens of artists.
