I'm currently organizing an unofficial Prank Call CD-ROM or (DVD-ROM if it terms out to warrant that size) with the unofficial title Hang Up, Babylon......NOW! (inspired by the Goodbye, Babylon gospel box set)

So far, here's the list of prank call characters/pieces that I have within my grasp:

* Tube Bar
* The Screamer
* Jackie Starr
* Stev
* Mark Knophler
* Gr**g T**k**gt*n (Great Prank Calls)
* Longmont Potion Castle
* Jerky Boys (just the first one)
* National Hardwood Floors Association (Savage Vigilance For A Rug-Free America)
* The Brother Russell/Melba Jackson series
* Kathy McGinty

and maybe some bonus Prank Eavesdroppers too:
* Raymond & Peter (Shut Up, Little Man)
* Marylyn & Grace (The Crazy Adventures Of Little Dynamo & Amazing Grace)

and possibly a separate one for the Nick Bougas series of Celebrities At Their Worst.. (not prank calls, as much as entertainment industry outtakes)

Any that I'm missing?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Mabe's _Revenge on the Telemarketers_ - though it's a reverse prank call, where he torments incoming telemarketing calls. Some funny ones on the first one, less on his second.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard any from this guy, but the Mabe review above mentions Roy D. Mercer, a fictitious character two DJs invented. 10+ CDs. Egads.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy cow you are missing the best one - Just Farr A Laugh!!!!!

* Adultery beat me to the punch on the "Just Farr a Laff." The "Bleachy" bits on there are priceless.

* Also, search Phil Hendrie -- it's not the same kind of phone pranks, but they are phone pranks nonetheless.

* And what about the calls where people make the Schwarzenegger and Pacino (etc.) soundboards? Is there a collected disc of those?

* And there are at least 3 volumes of Crank Yankers discs.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

John Trubee did some too, can't remember what albums they were on though.

I don't know although I got the distinct impression one website
was selling access to their Arnold pranks.

However, there are also a number of hilarious prank call MP3s using edits from Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. I don't know the website offhand but Google did return them fairly easily the last time I checked.

The MP3 of Arnold and the Gropinators' "I Think We Should Make a Carla
Sandwich" makes use of some them in mash-up.

George Smith, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The best Arnold one is his phone call to Gateway computers customer service. Poor Cassie.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

someone actually tried to prank me with the arnie one a couple of times!

i think it was the same guy who called once when i wasn't home and left this message: "yo dude, i was going to prank you, but that's the gayest message i've ever heard."

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

there has to be a place for Snoop Dogg's version of the motherfuckin' "Crank Yankers" theme, for shizzle

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought I posted this here, but what about the Zip Code Rapists CD? Parts of it are insufferable, but parts are pretty great.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Who were the guys that inherited a 1-800 customer support line and terrorized anyone who dialed with complaints? So brilliant -- they had the patsies coming to them, and wrung out the poor suckers as they passed the phone around from foul-mouthed "supervisor" to stuttering "company president." Har.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

John Trubee and the Ugly Janitors of America... I think he also published a zine that exclusively reviewed and sold cassettes of pranks, including the vast and worrying cell phone interception subculture. Oh yes, watch what you say. There's also a lot of this in Negativland's daily world.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If someone can make me a copy of "Just Farr A Laugh", I will reciprocate with the final CD-ROM of this. (I'm going to respectfully pass on the Crank Yankers, as I've heard them, and not been too wowed by them, unfortunately)

If anyone else has stuff worthy of this, I'll make a similar trade as well. I'm about to start compiling this very soon!

(And I have that John Trubee record! I think the prank calls are on the black and white one... there's a track where he says in a weird voice "I NEED A WIIIIG..... FOR MY HEEEEEAD!")

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the worst prank calls ive ever heard are on the new buddyhead comp. the guy calls the stokes management, the ataris management, tenacious d's management, karen o and gideon yago. he makes himself look way lamer then the victims.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the touch tone terrorists (i think that's the name) have some decent stuff, but you gotta hear matt besser (of upright citizens brigade fame) and his may i help you dumbass?. his bjork impression is priceless.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You have to get the Victor Lewis-Smith CD, something about "tested for irritancy", he calls the BBC reception desk for "Marcus Garvey" etcet. funnier than I just made it out to be.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Chris Morris. 'On The Hour' and his Radio 1 show from 1994.

Did he get one of the Pet Shop Boys to comment on the death of Michael Heseltine or did I imagine that?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear this now.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the gideon yago one is ok

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Beck "Zatyricon" where Justin Meldal-Johnson calls a plastic surgeon's office!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the Bjork bit on the Besser disk is great.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

no he got the bassist out of the jam to comment on the death of m heseltine. in actual fact as any morris fan knows, he never as is so often mentioned 'report the death of michael heseltine' he said this :
'...and if there is any news of the death of michael heseltine, we'll let you know' at the start of the radio 1 show. it's followed him round ever since, but as per usual he was merely pointing out that people are thick and don't listen, and thus thick people who didn't listen thought they'd heard him report the actual death of the aforementioned. they hadn't.

Also notably (for some) sampled on the Orb's "Towers of Dub"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

this guy willie p. richardson makes some hilarious prank calls along with his wife (for those prank calls requiring the feminine touch).

katnyc, Thursday, 8 April 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I'm just a "prankist", but I get a sense that there's usually an inverse relationship between the quality of prank calls and the visibility of the prankster's mug on said releases.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the Banafish comp. track where Neil Hamburger calls a psychic network (and is told by the operator that she has seen him perform) should be included.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

make some of your own.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 9 April 2004 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Serial Caller was pretty well known a few years back for pranking UK sports stars like Robbie Fowler and Teddy Sheringham.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, THanks to all of you for contributing to this. :)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Am currently listening to The Social Crime Network. The calls by Sally and the 'YAY! YAY! YAY!' guy are top stuff.

sherm, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i like how the Longmont Potion guy had someone film covert videos of some of his prank call victims as they talk to him.

sherm, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

woah, i missed this thread. db, i talked about NHWA "filberts" on another ILM thread.

:-D

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the Schwarzenegger & Pacino are collected on a cd called "dj prank's greatest celebrity phone calls". Release 003 from an unnamed label (so what's the point of numbering it?)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The Kathy McGinty cd was done by that guy Derek Erdman who had the song i.d. contest that was so hot here last week...
Here's the link: http://www.derekerdman.com/kathymcginty/kathymcginty.htm

I think my favorite crank call of all time is the "Yogurt Machine" bit on Just Farr a Laugh.

Mike Dixon (Mike Dixon), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you've got to use the Touchtone Terrorists. Also, have you ever heard the one called "Malcolm X Stamp"? That's a laugh riot - if you can't track it down, let me know.

There's also a record called Phone Jackin' that's pretty weak, but the first track "Thai Restaurant" is laugh-tastic.

I made Kathy Mcginty with my ex-girlfriend. If you intend on selling these, send me a pizza.

Thanks!
