"And lo, I touched the face of God, and he did not turn away, and nor did I turn to stone. Instead he offered me inside the Kingdom of Heaven, and, graciously, I accepted."

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

what does it sound like?

m., Monday, 12 April 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

like a giant erection that shoots forth a rain of diamonds and pearls

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"nor did I turn to stone" seems like the wrong phrase here

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

you're making it hard for me

this song is so good that even those pricks Blue couldn't ruin it when they covered it;

Nik (Nik), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, this is this.

m., Monday, 12 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They're from MN, you know.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Step back you're dancing kinda close
I feel a little poke coming through
On you

Now girl I know you felt it
But boo, you know I can't help it
You know what I wanna do

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Monday, 12 April 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember in like 8th grade me and my friend were watching whatever that MTV show was where they showed the lyrics, and this song came on. We had never really listened to the words before.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Monday, 12 April 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This song gives me the giggles. But not as much as "Thong Song" cuz they don't sound quite so passionate.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if she can tell I'm hard RIGHT NOW

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

classic classic classic classic classic classic classic

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I am considering doing this song for my Critical Karaoke thing at EMP this year (in the free-for-all after the main presentation)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"makes me want you SO bad se-xu-al-ly-y, OH GIR-R-R-RL!"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

you're making it hard for me

Nik (Nik), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I only realised a few months ago, but incidentally, Aaliyah's "Rock the boat" isn't really about boats is it?

Nik (Nik), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

truly one of the all-time greatest.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel a little poke coming through

No song makes me happier when it shows up on the radio

kind-hearted, sensitive keytar player (Abbott), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

I swear no one in my hometown recognized it was a song about 'oops lol boner' or they wouldn't have played it at every school dance like it was 'One Sweet Day' by Mariah Carey & Boys II Men orsomething.

So Classic. Just listened again and realized the groove is more 80s boogie-sounding than I had remembered.

Abbott it was the same in my town. I think everyone I grew up sort of discovered afterward that the song was not romantic at all and was literally about popping boners on the dance floor. I always used to think that R. Kelly was soooo jealous of this one. He probably still is.

I would say this is the best pop song of the '90s. Because it is about boners.

great & spacious building (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

This song shows up in my dreams

I had a dream last night that Scissor Sisters came out with a new single called "Robert DeNiro Rap," which started out pretty epic but then ended up being a sample of "Too Close" by Next, the woman's vocals, over a bunch of disco lasers. Disappointing.

Fortuitous thread bump! About 6 days ago I looked this up on Youtube, and I think I've only now just been able to get it out of my head; I've listened to it way too many times in the last week.

It's definitely the best songs about erections I've listened to in a while.

EDB, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 05:17 (fifteen years ago)

I was the only one to vote for this masterpiece in the songs of the century poll. same with Thong Song. wtf people?

gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 08:49 (fifteen years ago)

This is miles ahead of Thong Song though

I mean I really hate to say this but it's one of those kind of unique 90's songs that defines the era so damn well and doesn't really sound like anything else. I would say "I Want You" (Savage Garden) is another one in this category.

frogbs, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

Loved hearing the band West Side play this in their Minnesota-leaning set circa 2003, and still have quite a bit of affection for it. Curious how it "doesn't really sound like anything else" though--maybe you were listening to more radio than I was to catch the nuances. I wasn't exactly a connoisseur of Boys II Men et al, but I recognized the sample and had the impression this was a catchier and funnier version of a common going formula. Remember seeing them play with a bunch of other boy groups, too.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 24 February 2011 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

Just the way the vocals sounded was very unique. I don't know how else to explain it. I know that there's really nothing different about the song but it just has some specific kind of sound in the backing vocals that I always liked. Just like "I Want You" by Savage Garden. But most of all what I appreciated about "Too Close" is that there was no real subtlety or anything hidden. Its just straight up about b0ners

frogbs, Thursday, 24 February 2011 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

Such a perfectly arranged song, too. That whole first Next album was quite good, though nothing on it topped "Too Close," of course.

Next's frontman RL released this single in late '09, which sounded kind of like a sad, low-budget rewrite of The-Dream's "Rockin' That Shit":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn5njO3JvoE&feature=related

But I'm still holding out hope for a possible new Next album this year. The title, Ninety Seven, seems to promise a return to that early sound.

Evan R, Thursday, 24 February 2011 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

can't believe the UK was introduced to this track via fucking blue

lex pretend, Thursday, 24 February 2011 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

does anyone else immediately pair this group with "ruff endz" (also 90s; "no more", and "someone to love you"...)?

tough for me to disassociate the two

pearsonic, Thursday, 24 February 2011 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

this shit and 112 were my jamz.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Thursday, 24 February 2011 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 24 February 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

Jagged Edge, although I guess they kinda distinguished themselves later.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 24 February 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

I know I'm conflating different eras of R&B here, but seeing (of all acts) Bell Biv DeVoe kill it last night playing with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon made me hope that Next would also use that show to springboard a comeback. I would love to hear what The Roots do with "Too Close."

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Wednesday, 10 December 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

this song is v unique in the scheme of pop from that year, it almost comes across like a chic homage

(曇り) (clouds), Wednesday, 10 December 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

Well it does sample Kurtis Blow's Christmas Rappin'.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 10 December 2014 18:49 (eleven years ago)

J. Sam, Wednesday, 10 December 2014 19:12 (eleven years ago)

first time I heard "Christmas Rappin" I was really bothered by it, because I knew that it was sampled big-time somewhere but couldn't put my finger on it
