Cam'ron - Yayo Man

'i whip whip yay, flip flip yay, never sniff *snffffffff*... yay!!'

This is the first song on Purple Haze, and it's really beautiful. It samples the Blondie song off Scarface, which seems a bit obvious, and i know we're not allowed to mention how rap songs sample rock songs, but it's such a cool sample! I don't really understand how or why Diplomats and Lil Flip have been hanging out, but Cam'ron kind of answers himself and comments on his lyrics, like Flip does, lots of people seem to like that style on ILM.

this song is sick.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

So good. Purple Haze as a whole seems like a great album on cursory first listen - lots of standout songs, but this is way the catchiest.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, maybe "To the top" is the catchiest. They're all catchy. It's even better than lil flip's album...

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah...great song. I love Cam's bits about Dwight Gooden and Strawberry. The intro is too long though.

s>c>, Monday, 12 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it is beautiful. i like the part about when you sniff it, it start at your brain, shimmer down your heart and your frame, get scared, start to complain. where you get it from? i chartered a plane.

TELL YOUR WHITE GIRLS ABOUT MY WHITE, GIRLS

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i think killa's calling his yayo "white girl" there, Rollie, bringing back that classic NY slang for blow: 'yo man, we just copped some girl"

Jazzie Pha, Monday, 12 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

'Killa Kam'!!! It's got some kind of African chanting on it saying 'killa kam! killa kam kam killa killa killa kam kam killa!', but it also sounds a bit like Enya! Also, it has dragging sounds at the end of each bar and weird human gorrilla noises. And is also really beautiufl! He spits lots of game about diamonds and clothes. There's too many great lines in this song but i keep rewinding the 2nd verse: 'canary burgandy, i call it lemon red, yellow diamonds in my ear i call em lemonheads, lemonhead end up dead, ice like Winnipegg gem-stone flinstone, you could say i'm friends with Fred'. He reps Harlem in the 3rd verse as well. The beat is really really really beautiful.

scg, Monday, 12 April 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm suspicious of the idea that the final version of the album, which will not be in stores til June, has leaked already, but out of curiousity, what's the tracklist that's floating around?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 12 April 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only dl a few songs from the advance copy:

Yayo Man
Bust Ya Guns F. lil Flip
Get Em Girls
Killa Cam
Jamaican Joint
Diamonds and Pearls
Crown Me F. Juelz Santana
Half Time Show

No No No remix f. TI, jae millz

that Purple Haze tune was on the 2nd cd of Diplomatic Immunity.

scg, Monday, 12 April 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i downloaded one with those tracks, too. it just looks like all of his recent mixtape stuff collected. and purple haze is from diplomatic immunity and we go hard is from the last dmx album. this one looks better:

1. Yayo Man
2. Dead Motherfuckers
3. Hey Lady (w/ Freaky Zeeky)
4. Shake (w/ JR Writer)
5. No Thanks To You
6. It's Going Down (w/ Jimmy Jones)

ww, Monday, 12 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

this really does have the prettiest of backings.

m., Monday, 12 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep seeing it spelled "yeo man" for some reason.

djdee2005, Monday, 12 April 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

(stout yeo man)

this is lp of the year dudes! but no bust ya pistols? :(

genius of heatmakerz: killa kam is a sizzla sample, cam/come see?

prima fassy (mwah), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"i'm the prince that sold prince purple rain"

prima fassy (mwah), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

cam saying "i ain't gotta say much, you already heard it" in first lp song intro is so cool!

prima fassy (mwah), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(i thought 'change gonna come' and 'long time coming' were the same but mislabelled?)

prima fassy (mwah), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

they are..."Long Time Coming" is the original w/ a vocal sample on the hook, "Change Gonna Come" has Jaheim singing a different hook in place of it...I like the first one better.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah dipset having to rerecord the best tracks for offish purposes is my greatest fear, the new 'get em girls' sucks!

prima fassy (mwah), Monday, 12 April 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
Shit, I gotta review the album (which I like a lot; I'd give it an 8/10 but I've been giving everything I review for this particular publication an 8/10 so uh) and I just got the advance and I have no idea who proudces what and what tracks will eventually wind up on the final version and he covers Cyndi Lauper? Yikes.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

dude it's not gonna be in stores for another month, don't review it yet, or at least make it clear in the review that you're talking about an advance copy because you know the tracklist is gonna be switched up and shit. what's the tracklist on the version you have?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 7 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the 1st one that mentions dmx and whatnot. the review's been shelved for that very reason.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 7 May 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

if you're dying to run a review of something, review the Diplomats Vol. 5 mixtape, it has a lot of the new Cam solo tracks that will probably be on the album in some form or another.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
revive!

got a CDR with those tracks in the first list. 'get 'em girls' is a track I can't get past right now, that good (esp the sound poetry type sound used is killa). Is this thing gonna come out in the UK? anyone?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

'get em girls' is out now as the b to 'hey lady' (along with the amazin 'shake'). unfortunately its a bobbins reinterpreted version as remarked above and elsewhere. the album... sigh whatev maybe it'll be out this summer when 'girls just wanna have fun' blows

'yall some dead motherfuckers' is quietly staggering.

julio do you like 'santana town'!

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

actually yeah fuck you ilm why arent u spazzed out over shake, its the 04 gabba bellydancer!

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it's even got the same "urrr do i even really like this or am i just impressed hey maybe thats why only internet guys like this" queezy feel

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I gave the whole thing one listen and since then its only been the first three tracks: like I said 'get 'em girls' is so good I can't quite get past it (its like 'no new york', I have to skip past 'dish it out' if I wanna hear the rest of the record).

I'll report on the rest of it later.

(did you see my revival of the jadakiss 'the champ is here' thread prima?)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

he's already shot 3 videos for the goddamn album (2 of them out already) and it still doesn't have a certain release date. mtv.com even said it may not be out until the end of the year.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i did see the thread yeah. what do want to know about, mixtapes? i'd have reservations about recommending any mixtape unreservedly cos the art i suppose is to see tracklists of whats out and cherrypick d/l, unless u can find a good hooky market stall selling them all for 5 quid that is. google "rap mixtapes" and... yeah.

(an alternative is to be all deep super industry and get ahold of the jawdropping hot 97 2cd comps that most radio djs play out off. if i acquire one i'll let u know tho)

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

thx prima.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
so the album still isn't out yet right?

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

December 7th is the release date now. and call me crazy, I get the feeling they might stick with that date this time.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
dipset dipset dipset dipset

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been dipset crazy lately. picked up purple haze, the new jim jones and the old dipset album. is the new dipset worth picking up? even if it's totally stupid (like all those albums are) i'd probably like it. shit, even "built this city" is funny as fuck. none of my friends can stand it though

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it mostly for SANTANA and Crunk Muzik. The Jim Jones album is the one, though. Even if just for "Certified Gangsta" which is the sleeper tune of the year for me. I can't get enough of it.

Don't quote me boy, cos I ain't said shit.

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

purple haze = not half as good as the cover on the inside of the cd w./ cam wearing what looks like a purple mongolian hat!! fguck i really wanted to like this but after 'harlem' or whatever it peters the fuck out except for track 15!!! f cuk im drunk. my grandma, he's one bad mama jamma DAMN thats a good line, is cam's grandma a male??????? it seeems poised on this great glitzy rocafella thing but then doesnt come thru w/ the BEATs

jake b. (cerybut), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

peters out after 'harlem'?? thats probably the worst track!! what of "the dope man", "adrenalize", get-em girls", and "dip-set forever"?? or BUBBLE MUSIC? KILLA CAM DROPS NON_STOP PURPLE HEAT

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

carmanica's album of the year.

deej., Wednesday, 5 January 2005 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ok ill give you dispet forever but all those other beats are mediocre but 'more reasons' redeems it!!!

jake b. (cerybut), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

it gets stronger as it goes. Cam in the Timberland moccassins shuffling over Earth, Wind, & Fire, rhyming glossola-la-la-lia over opera, taking 'em to church. bonus points for letting Kanye produce, but not letting him rap.

icy hawt, Thursday, 6 January 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit, I wish I'd known about "Purple Haze" before I made my 2004 best-of. I just want to listen to "Bubble Music" and "Killa Cam" and "Dip-Set Forever" again and again. I just about drove off the road when I heard "Down and Out" on Jam'n 94.5 last night.

Cock and spray, hit you from a block away, drinking sake on a Suzuki, we in Osaka bay!

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the chorus on Dopeman is real annoying, but check how Jim Jones makes like Ice T in "6 in tha Morning" at the end of his verse!

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that Dopeman chorus is super-jarring; they're going for this really cool 1991 Compton sound with those synthesizers, and then that hook sticks out like a sore thumb.

Does anybody else really love "Shake" in spite of how much that hook sticks out like a sore thumb?

It took me about three or four listens straight through (including the skits) before it really sank in. The earring that costs as much as three houses in Delaware? Even his throwaway lines are pure gold.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The hook is so fucking weird i really love it! (on "shake")

Call em lemonheads flinstones you could say i'm friends with fred.
