OneRepublic - ApologizeLeona Lewis - Bleeding Love
I don't really understand the function of the (drum machine?) handclaps in these two songs. is the audience expected to clap along in solidarity with the artists' pain? the handclaps are totally at odds with the tone of the lyrics, but there isn't anything evocative or thought-provoking about the contrast — it seems like a classic example of the producer not knowing what to with the material (or using peppy backing tracks to compensate for depressing lyrics). I feel like this was a common thing in chartpop in the late '00s.

hmm, it turns out both of those songs were written and/or produced by Ryan Tedder, who was also responsible for Beyonce's inappropriately handclappy "Halo". fuck that guy iirc.

It's because they're power ballads.

Thought this revive was gonna be for "The Door".
are people supposed to clap along to power ballads? I honestly don't know.
